The Abbey West Hollywood

For those of us who remember when it was a tiny little coffee shop across the street from its present location at 692 N. Robertson Boulevard, the massive expansion and renovation going on at the Abbey is a sight to see. Already packed all week long, the Abbey is a great example of what can happen to a business when its owner (the tireless and friendly David Cooley) re-invests in his property, supports the community, and serves gigantic frozen apple martinis.
The Abbey recently announced that on June 1st it will host West Hollywood's first gay weddings with Mayor Duran officiating, Margaret Cho hosting, and Pepper Mashay and the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles singing "Amazing Grace". Now that's not too gay, is it?
There are so many businesses that fail along the uber-gay, uber-fickle strip of Santa Monica Boulevard that it's a pleasure to watch a business actually improve the neighborhood. Below you will find a couple shots I took of the Abbey currently under construction and renderings of what it's quickly becoming — a religious experience. The Sisters may ask to move in soon!

Hey
Is that last pic an artists impression, or is that how it looks already? If its the latter, I'm truly amazed at how fast they've done it...WOW

It has been amazing transformation. In 1986 I would spend Thursday nights at that little coffee shop (then across the street) and then hop over to Studio One for 18 and over night. The Abbey grew up and moved across the street and I grew up and started going to Motherlode- yikes!

I used to love The Abbey - that is, until the drinks became smaller and more expensive. Come on, people, $12 for tiny glass of vodka tonic? I'm not rich and this place isn't ALL that. I will have to go elsewhere now to afford a night out. Motherlode? Mickey's? Here on Sundays (at least you can dance). I wish the rest of WeHo would take a stand and fight this "gay" price gouging.
