Worth Waiting For
When I first lived in California in 1991 I couldn't get enough of George Michael's Listen Without Prejudice (Vol. 1). We all own CDs that somehow seem personally attuned to our lives at certain moments; soundtracks made especially for us. LWP characterized three short months when I was living at the beach in Venice, California during the summer, waiting tables at a tacky tourist restaurant, and really discovering a lot about life. To this day, I can't smell the summer morning tide of California salt and fog without a faint reminder of that rich, powerful music. George Michael's Patience is like the long-awaited sequel to that CD and offers the same hypnotic confection of mournful ballads, upbeat club tracks, and spacious, breezy, soulful arrangements. George Michael's not doing anything new here, but who cares, because he's doing what he does best. In recent years, his infrequent singles like "Freeek" and "Shoot the Dog" (which appear) felt to me haphazard and claustrophobic, yet in this mix of tracks they assume new meaning, they make sense. Definitely recommended.

I have never forgiven him for not releasing a Vol. 2. (I know, I know... he split with the record company... he couldn't, blah blah blah... but still...)

Great album indeed. I really encourage you to pick it up! The Streets will release a new album on the 18, A Grand Don't Come For Free, read the reviews on www.metacritic.com and pick that one up too.

He is releasing his album via Gay.com online. I thought that was a brilliant move. He has always been one of my favourites. Come to think of it, I used to fancy him mad when I was a kid listening to Wake me up before you go go. :-)

By for his best album since LWPV1. However, I enjoy Older, and Songs of the Last Century too.
Someone told me that the song "Flawless" was originally done by a Drag/Trans group.
Anyone know any more info on this?

"Flawless" was originally recorded by a group called The Ones a couple years ago, and GM samples it here. The original Flawless is a great song too. I don't know a lot about The Ones, so I'm not sure if they are transgender or drag queens. You may be getting things mixed up with the movie Flawless starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and DeNiro directed by Joel Schumacher in which Hoffman plays a drag queen.

I find the album slightly schizophrenic with songs that focus on fun and feeling great, and tracks that are drawn from his depression and loss of his mother. Nonetheless, stylish and genuine.
