Weekend Playlist: Six Feet Under — Season 4
I talked a lot about Six Feet Under this week and it's about to get a lot crazier.
I was scouring their website for music from the series and got a little carried away, so I decided to present this playlist based on information from the SFU site since there's no real official soundtrack. Even if there was one, it would probably be a very edited version of this: 47 tracks of absolutely stunning, gorgeous music. I thought I'd present them all in one place for those who would like to put their own together. I have to say that music supervisor Gary Calamar is a god. In L.A. we are blessed to have him as a DJ on KCRW, but I can't heap enough praise upon him for the music supervision of this show.
What you'll find in this list is a sampling of new alternative and electronica, classic soul and jazz, and a small helping of camp (think Dinah Shore). There were other artists that I'd heard of, yet not really discovered. This is a buffet to gorge yourselves on.
Some of the explanatory text is verbatim from the SFU site, some I've re-edited. I hope to do more playlists like this on a regular basis, in addition to the In Heavy Rotation charts.
Tracks are presented chronologically, in order of episode and broadcast.
1. "Something in the Air" — Thunderclap Newman
The season's first episode began as a kid, high on LSD, jumped off the roof of a building thinking he could fly.
2. "Baby in Two" — Pernice Brothers
Claire tells Russell about Lisa's death.
3. "Teach Your Children" — Crosby, Stills & Nash
Lisa's brother-in-law Hoyt and his twin sons sing this at Lisa's funeral.
4. "Thank You" — Sly and the Family Stone
In an office warehouse, two guys fuck around with sex dolls.
5. "Cherry Blossom Girl" — Air
Claire, Anita, and Edy discuss art at the coffeehouse.

6. "U Could Be (So Good For Me)" — Stardust Twin
David and Keith sing along to one of popstar Celeste's tunes at home, getting the lyrics wrong.
7. "Samsonite Man" — Alicia Keyes
Music plays on the radio in Sophie's house.
8. "Troubles in My Life" — Roscoe Chenier
Accompanies Claire and Anita's bong hit.
9. "Toyz" — Missy Elliott
Claire watches Edy get it on with another girl.

Claire and Anita talk about Edy's sexual orientation.
11. "Legend in Your Own Mind" — Stardust Twin
Celeste rehearses this song on stage in preparation for a concert.
12. "Walking On Space" — Smooth
Brenda and Joe listen to Nate's troubles.
13. "Somnambulist" — BT
Celeste has words with a charity chairwoman. Song plays from her dressing room.
14. "Sambalaté" — Martinez
Brenda and Joe have dinner at Margaret's apartment.
15. "Might As Well Be Spring" — Astrud Gilberto
Brenda and Joe finish up dinner with Margaret and Oliver.
16. "After the Dance" — Marvin Gaye
A couple makes love in a hot tub before the woman's death.
17. "Java" — Al Hirt
Plays inside fabric store as Ruth talks to her cashier friend Becky about George's "single" son.
18. "It's My Life" — No Doubt
David drives Jake, a hitchhiker, around to find an ATM.
19. "Just a Ride" — Jem
Brenda is studying when Joe arrives with good news about a house.
20. "The Execution of All Things" — Rilo Kiley
Anita moves in with Claire.
21. "Margerine Melodie" — Stereolab
Claire and her friends plan an art project.
22. "Transatlanticism" — Death Cab for Cutie
In the coach house, Claire, Edie, Anita, Russell, and Jimmy get closer. Song plays in the background — everybody sings along.
23. "Rainbow Sign" — Fruit Bats
Anita invites Russell and Jimmy to take a shower.
24. "Nowhere Near" — Yo La Tengo
Claire is high at a painting party, when Nate calls to remind her of David's birthday dinner.
25. "So Long Without You" — Bent
Brenda is shopping in a linen store when she imagines an avalanche of pillows falling on her.
26. "Don't Leave Me This Way" — Thelma Houston
At a gay club, Keith gets a call from David.
27. "Everything is Everything" — Phoenix
Claire, Edie, Anita and Jimmy discuss their art project.
28. "Genevieve" (Quantic Remix) — Greyboy
Celeste looks on as Javier comes on to Keith at a party.
29. "Shaded" — Paco
Claire prepares for Edy's visit. Ruth thinks Anita should pay rent if she is going to be around so much.
30. "Heavenly" — San Ilya
Claire realizes she cannot go through with making love to Edy.
31. "How To Be Dead" — Snow Patrol
Song plays in the LAC Arts Student Lounge as Claire and Billy talk.

Brenda visits her dealer to buy some pot.

Brenda is at her dealer's apt getting stoned and realizes she has to leave.

Claire shows Nate the dollhouse.

Claire dances to entice Edy at Jimmy's party.
36. "Universal Love" — Truby Trio
At Terry's wedding, David enquires about adopting a baby.
37. "Jolene" — Mindy Smith
In an Idaho cafe, Nate and Brenda have an awkward meeting with Barb.
38. "Mambuloo" — Mo' Horizons
David gets into a fight in a sushi restaurant.
39. "Naked As We Came" — Iron & Wine
Claire and Ruth talk about drugs, sex, and art.
40. "Dia de Yemanja" — Cibelle
Olivier, Brenda and Billy visit Margaret at the hospital.
41. "Everything Happens To Me" — Gene Harris
Keith and David have dinner with Roger Pasquese to discuss the lawsuit.
42. "Inside of Love" — Nada Surf
Jimmy tells Claire that his art gallery is interested in her work.

Nate is confronted by Barb regarding Lisa's cremains.

At Roger Pasquese's house, Keith agrees to Roger's proposition and vents his frustrations with David.

Roger Pasquese calls Keith with another proposition.

Ruth & George meet George's daughter Maggie for lunch.

Yeah, thanks Thomas. That's a great soundtrack - I have that one too. It just took forever to come out and offered, I think, a very edited version of what was used during that season. It would be great if they could come out with a box set!

GREAT idea Andy - the music listed from the SFU site (that is specifically the music playing throughout the show - as opposed to the actual "commercial" soundtrack...) is intelligent, obscure & previously un-heard-of tracks. I pride myself on my personal music collection (cd's and mp3's) being pretty eclectic - but these SFU guys make me extremely jealous...they're GOOD.
Can't wait for future installments...much appreciated!

Ah. I understand now what you are saying...and can't agree more. Though I think I would go into sensory overload if I had continued access to all of the music that has played throughout the show.

Found the song from the supermaket commercial for season 4!
It is Feeling Good by Nina Simone. I thought it was a guy singing..but it was a chick!

I've look everywhere on the net to find a particular song. It was played as the end of Episode 46 (season 4: The Dare) when showing all the credits. Do you by any chance know what's name of that song? A female voice singing very lightly and mysteriously :o)
Can't sleep well until i have that song......
