The Man Formerly From Gucci
Tom Ford's publicity blitz for his new book continues with a liquored-up interview with GQ's Michael Hainey. Some choice outtakes:
On boozing at Gucci:
"Five o'clock every day, man, it was cocktail hour. And those cocktails came out, trays of vodka tonics, and the whole staff would keep drinking till like nine, and we'd do that every day, every day. Because in a creative profession, sometimes loosening up is the best idea. Seriously."
On the fashion industry:
"It's like high school, too, by the way."
On his first gay experience:
"I'd just turned 18. His name's Ian Falconer. You might know him. He writes children's books."
On sleeping with men vs. women:
"I don't want to sleep with anything with thin wrists. I want to sleep with something strong and powerful. My equal. That could be a sort of match to the death. Where we're pitted against each other. It disturbs me that their wrists are thin. It disturbs me that they're willowy. That I could hurt them, that they're fragile. It makes me behave differently with them and give them latitude that I would not give to a man."
On sluts:
"If sluttiness is what you like, what's wrong with that? Why do we think being a slut's bad? Sluttiness is just a lot of freedom."
On hygiene:
"I like everybody with a touch of dirty. I mean, I'm not saying I want to go between someone's legs and find flies buzzing around there...It should be clean. But we've gotten silly about this."
On his forehead flaws:
"I have Botox right here and collagen right in my brow lines. I'm going to have some collagen put in there. It's probably because this part is all Botoxed, and so it's dead smooth. So I need to have that fixed. I noticed that the other day. Thanks for pointing it out."

Hmmm....a lot of depth there!

Oh, who cares about depth? I still love him and will continue to pledge allegiance to his hairy chest every night before bed.

I perfer a hygenic as possible.

No, I find him to be utterly honest. That's refreshing for a person in the fashion/entertainment industry especially.
I like it when someone speaks honestly to me without phrasing anything condescendingly or in the form of an attack, because it allows me to do the same.
I think honesty and bravery are quite intertwined.

But honestly, he sounds shallow and predictable.
If someone's so relentlessly predictable, it doesn't matter if they're honest or not; you can figure them out.
That said, where do I buy the book?

Why did you buy the book? And do we really want him making Hollywood movies? Aren't there enough shallow blah movies out there without him adding to it?
It just goes to show that, like models, designers should be seen and not heard...

All these people commenting on how shallow Tom Ford is obviously haven't read the entire interview. First of all, what is Tom Ford, former fashion designer, expected to be talking about? The interview is funny and is about his life post-Gucci, not post-NASA. I thought it was an amazing Q&A because it was raw, fun, honest, and he really put a lot of "So What" style comments out there that a lot of people need to hear. And I didn't even care about Tom FOrd before I read the article! Viva Tom Ford! Read the GQ article! (And PS the Q&A is not BY Terry Richardson, Richardson only took the photos.) And one more thing...to everyone bitching that there isn't enough "depth," come ON...I'd like to see how dynamic and deep all y'all are while doing an interview over cocktails. Later!

Tom is just the perfect man-he's handsome,ellegant,masculine,sexy,sophisticated....Except that he's gay...I would like to change that:)

Oh Ana, how predictable. Another woman who wants to "fix" a gay man. What a waste to gay men that would be! That's a twist on the common female viewpoint about gay men.
I'm totally ambivalent about Tom Ford, but as a very good perfumer I'm green with envy that he can get so much press for his hundredth time rehashed fragrance for men, which he didn't even design himself.
