Here!'s Sundance Report

If you look hard enough through here! TV's fairly comprehensive set of daily reports of the gay goings-on in Park City these past couple of weeks you'll be able to find these boys in the hot tub, but don't blink or you'll miss them. The here! daily missives are more like a set of Cliff's Notes but do provide a quick glimpse into the gay side of the fest that I haven't really seen before.

I get Here-TV's pay channel on Dish Network, and the only time I bought a movie was to watch their much-publicizied "premiere" of a movie called Too Cool For Christmas, which was terrible - an unwatchable piece of total crap about a teenage girl. The only thing gay about it was that the girl's parents were two dads, very brief supporting characters - almost cameo roles. Marketing it as a gay movie on a gay pay channel was a ripoff. And I learned later that Here TV had made an alternate, heterosexual version for the Lifetime cable network. Same movie with a different title, exceptthey filmed a man & wife to replace the same-sex parents. That really annoyed me. Apparantly Here TV didn't think including gays as "marketable" to straights to they filmed an alternate version, in advance. The Here TV pay channel offers 3 movies every month, mediocre titles at best and most of them really awful. But just like gay-themed DVDs that are crap inside, they put a hunky shirtless guy or two in the picture and sell it deceptively. I'd like to support the gay community and I'd like to support a good pay channel but I won't be taken advantage of, and I resent it. I hope Here TV gets a lot better, fast.

Actually if you take a look at the wide range of programming that here! has to offer, you'll see that here! aims to reflect and appeal to the entire diverse community. Not with one film but with a wide range of programming.
Too Cool for Christmas was a family film released during the holiday season. It was meant for families to enjoy together. Really, if you think about it, it was a innovative idea. When's the last time you saw a G-rated family film with gay parents?
But.. if you're wanting more GAY, then check out Showboy, Friends and Family or Yossi and Jagger. Fun and sexy more your sensibility? then check out the US premiere of An Audience with Kylie Minogue. If you want hot bare-chested men, you can tuned into the provocative films Sugar or Best of Boys in Love. Looking for a new original series? then keep an eye out for Dante's Cove and Third Man Out starring Chad Allen. If you want unscripted documentaries, check out the affirming here! family or the bitter sweet here! to Remember. If you want lesbian programming, there's Mango Kiss and April's Shower. Or how about checking out classics such as Longtime Companion, The Sum of Us, or Wigstock: The Movie.
If you want back-to-back programming, check out here! on DIRECTV.
The 3 titles a month on DISH and Too Cool for Christmas only represent a small slice of what here! has to offer.
Just wanted to offer a bit of perspective.

Everyone,
You wouldn't believe it but Sundance Festival is an amazingly gay place with the Queer Lounge and the amazing amount of queer oriented movies at both Sundance and Slamdance. I have volunteered for two years at the Queer Lounge...and it really brings a cohesive area for GLBT people to hang and to meet new friends and create a wonderful memory of the Film Festivals....it truely is not like your in Ultra-Conservative Utah....plus the skiing is great!
I would recommend it to everyone....plus you might get into some great parties....if you know who to kiss up to enough.

Matt, do you work for Here TV? If not, you should. It sounds like they're paying you.
Too Cool For Christmas was just awful, I'm sorry. Only someone who was part of the cast or crew or Here TV could find it watchable. Blech.
I tried watching Showboy and it was boring. I didn't watch Friends And Family. I have Yossi And Jagger on DVD and it is watchable, but not great. An Audience With Kylie Minogue is what...about 3 or 4 years old? I watched it a couple of years ago on Pridevision, Canada's now-brankrupt gay channel. The original series, especially the one with Chad Allen, sounds intriguing - but while I'm hopeful I'm also savvy enough to know "I'll believe it when I see it." So much gay stuff is total, amateur crap. I wish Here TV well on the original series. I'll tune in once it appears and if it's good I'll continue to buy. The last thing I want is any lesbian programming, sorry. Just personal taste. I've seen Longtime Companion, The Sum Of Us (both great) and Woodstock about a half dozen times each, at least. I don't need to watch any of them again any time soon.
I have some hope for LOGO, the new gay channel launching this summer, but since they intend to be advertiser-supported I expect them to be bland and cautious.

Andy:
Besides all the 6 pack chests at the Brazilian Fotolog site you introduced a few weeks ago, there is one which (I think since I don't know Portuguese) celebrates the 2004 Rio and Sao Paulo GLBT Parades and festivities.
Enjoy!
Regards,
Larry
