Thank God, Time is on Our Side

Macholcomb

You read something like the website of Marshall County, Alabama, particularly Sheriff Mac Holcomb's statement about the good ol' days of the 40's and the 50's and you wonder that there aren't still lynchings happening in the South. Recently brought to the attention of the world by Don Hunter, an Alabama native who now resides in California, Holcomb's website and view of the world are a frightening manifestation of the so-called "moral values" facilitating racism, homophobia, sexism, and intolerance in the American south.

  2. Unfortunately, it's not relegated to the American South. My friend (black) was recently in New Hampshire with an acquaintence of hers (white). My friend had left her ID at home but was going to buy cigarettes for the other person (both are way over 18). The store clerk was rude and wouldn't sell them to her, the friend went in to purchase the cigs and the clerk told her that it wouldn't be sold to her if she was with the colored girl in the car.

While not on the same scale as this Alabama man, the enlightened North isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

  3. I have family that moved to south-western Georgia about 10 years ago. When I visited I was in utter shock. Racism and homophobia is by no means subtle down there. There is no room for interpretation. Hatred is encouraged, applauded. Anyone from the North, North East or West coast who doesn't really see or understand what racism is on a daily basis should take a trip down to our rural south.
It ain't the 40's no more, but it is still happenning.

  6. The Alabama Sheriff might want to take a look at how the Los Angeles Sheriff Department does things the right way:

  7. Re: LA Sheriff -

See the Core Values statement. It's posted at each Sheriff Station and printed on all business cards.

  8. As a former resident of Marshall County, Alabama, you can imagine the shock I felt knowing that the elected official sworn to protect the residents of my home has such views. I am a homosexual who lived in Guntersville for some 20 odd years and still have many friends and family there. I'm outraged that public funds including my tax dollars are going to promote this website where Mac blatently advertises his personal views & opinions. The Chairman of the County Commission, which by the way funds the sheriffs website, stated himself that he is in disagreance with the sheriff but he doesn't feel that he has any jurisdiction to demand the removal of the letter. I would encourage anyone who disagrees with the Commissioner to write him at commission@marshallco.org and express your views.

**Sorry to use your website as a solicitation point for this Andy.

  10. Seems that Mac Holcomb isn't the only crooked person in the high places of Marshall County. Apparently, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Marshall County has been accused of solicitation.

Now that in itself isn't that bad I know. The bad part is that he was apparently soliciting young men who work for him at his local business.

Now you and readers tell me how guiltly this sounds... He has gone to court to get gag orders on the young man and his family in order to prevent them from telling anyone or talking to the press. If it isn't true, wouldn't you just come out with a statement that it isn't true and sue the family for Defamation? I think you look even more guilty going to court to issue the gag orders.

I look forward to more to come of this story in the very near future. Keep your eyes and ears open for more.

  11. It's sad that people in the world are like this. But, look at the time era in which he was raised. I'm not excusing him but he was brough up as a bigot, so what do you expect? I was born and raised there and i'm gay myself. I moved from there about two years ago because of how homophobic people are there. Religion and ignorance seem to work hand in hand.
