27-year-old Joao Gilberto Goncalves has become a sort of Gavin Newsom of Brazil. From a sleepy backwater town 80 miles from Sao Paulo, the heterosexual federal prosecuter is leading the charge to get equal marriage rights in that country. "Gays deserve equal rights, not more rights or less rights. This is something that should be discussed objectively, without interference by the church's moral standard of marriage." The Catholic church is outraged, naturally.

But seriously, the upside is that homosexuality was decriminalized just three years ago. Apparently, the Romanian human rights agency is taking the charge seriously.
