Idolatry

Arjan introduces the new sound of Jim Verraros, the American Idol contestant who came out post-season and is now making one more attempt to break into a dance music scene that really doesn't seem to tolerate male vocalists. The boys want their divas. However, Verraros appears to be taking a "Single White Female" strategy by co-opting the identity of the current pop obsession of the gays, down to the streaked hair and angsty pout. I must give Verraros props for making a statement — at least this is an identity he doesn't have to keep in the closet...

Actually, Jim is a very positive and grounded person. He has a maturity at a young age that I wish I had then -and he's sweet to boot. He's strong enough to carve out a niche on his own terms and I have a lot of faith in him as a person.

Agreed, Andy. Wouldn't it be great if Jim, during this time of "Scissor Sisters acceptance," would be able to garner more support than closet-cases (Clay, Ricky Martin, etc.)?---Oh, let's dare to dream...

A great talent behind Jim (and also an out artist) is Gabe Lopez, who co-wrote and produced Jim's debut album. Check out 'One Day' and 'Red Queen' from gabelopez.com.
I haven't seen this tall and talented Santa Barbara boy live yet, but hope to this summer.

it is great that he is open about his sexuality unlike Clay, Jason. But also unlike Clay, he isn't a very good singer.

Actually, he IS a good singer. And unlike Clay, Jim isn't white bread. He's singing from the heart, too. Check out "Outside."
