New Texas bill would ban gays from becoming foster parents. Rep Robert Talton (R): "It is our responsibility to make sure that we protect our most vulnerable children and I don't think we are doing that if we allow a foster parent that is homosexual or bisexual."
Michelangelo Signorile's 1988 encounter with Cardinal Ratzinger: "This man was the embodiment of all that had oppressed me, all the horrors I had suffered as a child. It was because of his bigotry that my family, my church -- everyone around me -- had alienated me, and it was because of his bigotry that I was called "faggot" in school. Because of his bigotry I was treated like garbage. He was responsible for the hell I'd endured. He and his kind were the people who forced me to live in shame, in the closet."

as I was walking around Santa Fe yesterday it was a lovely sight to see small gay flags in shop window after window. it's one way that the community is coming together in opposition to the visiting hatemongers.

A couple months ago in my blog I cited a letter to the editor from the NY Post (I know, I know) that accused gays of discriminating against children (!!!) by adopting them and therefore "denying" them two normal parents. Don't you love how suddenly it's the gays that are the bigots???

As a Texas resident, I'm saddened and angry over the bill that was passed by the House of Rep.'s. The actual bill is a good one, to increase the span of control for Child Protective Services, but a single right-wing Republican representative, who moonlights as a minister, attached an amendment to it that prohibits Gays from acting as Foster parents. It passed by a huge margin yesterday and will be sent to the Senate today. The ironic part is that the current head of Texas CPS is a lesbian, partnered for 8 years, with 4 adopted children. This couple has fostered 75 kids in the past 5 years, and under the new law their current foster kids will be taken away from them! Even though she's the head of CPS!! How insane can we get??!!
I'm packing my bags and moving to Connecticut!
