  1. Really Andy you can be such a condescending a** sometimes. I'm gay, I'm a Republican and I don't have a self loathing bone in my body.

You can't argue the issues so instead you call us names and comfort yourself by thinking that we must hate who we are.

  2. I was simply describing the nature of the article. I don't believe I said Mitch is a self-loathing Republican and I certainly have no need to comfort myself.

  3. Even Hillary is smart enough to realize how old and tired the stereotype is:

"Some aides to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton were irked by Mr. Clinton's remark, seeing the self-loathing label as old stereotyping that surely did not help Mrs. Clinton, whose re-election Mr. Finkelstein is working to prevent."

  4. Sorry Andy. I'm just so sick of the label. I love your blog, even when it sends me into a rage sometimes.

  5. none of the gay republicans i know seem particlarly self-loathing. they have just merely been duped into voting against thier own best interests like so many other republicans.

  7. Well, Mitch, what DO you loathe that leads you to identify yourself with The Party of Trog?

    Civil liberties?

    Privacy rights?

    Women's rights?

    Fair labor laws?

    A fair minimum wage?

    Equal opportunity in employement?

    Honesty in government?

    Accountability in government?

    Separation of Church and State?

    Environmental protection?

    Sovereignty of other countries?

    Banning assault weapons?

    Deficit control?

    States rights?

    Completing one's National Guard requirements?

    Medical insurance for indigent children?

    An independent judiciary?

    The Constitution?

  9. You know, I LIVE in Cincinnati, and I'm VERY certain that the campain to end Article XII was NOT spear-headed by a Log Cabin Republican, like they suggest in the article.

I definitely don't see gay Republicans as "self-loathing," and I see nothing wrong with gays and lesbians that identify with the Republican party, but I really don't understand how these gay Republicans can stand right along side and agree with the fraction of the party that outright wants to deny us certain rights.

You know, though, the same could be said of certain members of the Democratic party as well...

  10. I don't think that this is an issue of self-loathing as much as selfishness and self-absorption. For many gay Republicans--I think--they are more concerned about advancing their individual wealth, through a Republican agenda to dismantle a progressive tax structure, rather than focus on promoting equal rights and protecting civil liberties. I actually find this to be a more disturbing motivation. I can understand internalizing homophobia because we all have to some degree and have had to work through it at various points in time and with varying degrees of success. On the other hand, I find selling out peers for personal profit to be highly despicable and less excusable.

  11. All of you fools who stand on your soap boxes and theorize about why gay Republicans do what they do is exactly like bigots theorizing why homos do what they do.

In both cases, you have no idea what you're talking about and are fueled by ignorance and hate, but you don't let that stop you from mouthing off on a subject that is completely alien to you.

That's another reason I hate Democrats - you fucking think you know everything, but don't have any facts to back up your claims.

  12. I think it is entirely appropriate to wonder why gay and lesbian people would support a political party that is not only virulently anti-gay but has also been hijacked by the "christian" fundalmentalists. It is also rude to assume everyone who has an opinion about this topic is a democrat (who aren't that great on gay rights either)

  13. I spent enough time deep in the right wing to be able to tell you this: they will smile to your face and they will happily take whatever you want to contribute, but they don't respect you. Underneath it all, they believe deep in their hearts that you are an evil pervert.
The Democrats fail gay people on a daily basis because they are weak, lack courage, and are disorganized. But I will take that any day over the alternative.

  14. You want to be a Gay Republican, have at it! And enjoy the hatred of your peers, the constitutional amendments that take away your rights, or prohibit you from ever having any. Argue all you want about the "good" that the Republican Party works for, but in the end, you're still standing side by side with the party that wants nothing more than to see you in Hell. You may think otherwise, but by identifying yourself with anyone, regardless of party affiliation, that hates and discriminates then you are putting your stamp of approval on what they do.

It's ironic that all of you Gay Republicans are so defensive about your party affiliations. How about if I claim to be a Nazi? What would you think? The nazi's lowered taxes for the whites, they increased defense spending, they had an idiot for a leader, and they only discriminated/killed jews and fags...sound familiar?

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but I don't have to agree with them, and I hope I can speak my peace without being called names or bullied.

  15. I think all the commenters who use sweeping generaliztions to describe ANY group of people should take a minute and think before they type - I dont think all gay republicans have all the same qualities, and I dont think all gay democrats are the same, and maybe we can stop describing ALL of each group with these generalizations. I DO think one point the NYT got wrong, or at least they oversimplified, is this statement - "the number of gays who identify themselves as Republican is growing" - more or less putting the cart before the hoorse in some respects.... they seem to forget that at least some of them (and we can probably only guess what percentage) have been publicly Republican long before they were openly gay. You don't have to agree with all liberal-democrat-gays to acknowldege that many of them, being out and open and fighting for us for decades have made it easier for ALL gay people, of whatever political affiliation, to be open about our sexual orientation.
