2. Sorry, Leland, but I disagree with you. And believe me, I'm not whining.

   Pat Buchanan is so far to the right of most of America that he can actually come back to the other side (and on NAFTA and foreign policy, he actually does!). But we all know that he is no friend to friends of Dorothy.

   But let's face it - it reinforces the stereotype that lefties are angry white male idiots when stuff like this happens. To the housewife in Peoria, it makes civilized Pat Buchanan look like the victim of those crazy mohawked radicals.

   And that only helps Pat Buchanan.

3. I don't disagree that it was amusing to see Pat Buchanan doused with salad dressing, but if you think about the way this story will be covered by the media, the guy who threw the dressing isn't going to be painted as someone who was exercising his freedom of expression; he's going to be painted as an "intolerant" activist, a sociopath, or worse. And I agree with Wunderkid. That helps Pat Buchanan it makes him look like a moderate, which is the last thing he is.

   P.S.: Yes, it does make young Left activists look immature but it's not as though the followers of the Right don't make themselves look bad as well.

6. Has the American Left sunk so low that there would be any comments in favor of such a childish outburst?

   Not that I agree with Pat Buchanan -- in fact, he now sort of inhabits some strange no-man's land hovering somewhere above the political spectrum that I can't quite figure out (as Wunderkid alluded to) -- but still, it is sad that this is the Left's idea of the open exchange of political discourse, especially on college campuses, which are supposed to be incubators of free thought and debate. (This came approximately two days after Bill Kristol was hit with a pie in the face at another school.)
