Chris Crain Appears on Dutch TV

Crain1

Window Media Editorial Director Chris Crain, who was severely beaten in a hate crime on Queens Day in Amsterdam by a group of Moroccan assailants, speaks to host Jeroen Pauw on the news program Nova on the Netherlands' Channel 3 in these photos, provided to Towleroad by music blogger Arjan, who is spending time there this week. Crain was walking hand-in-hand with his boyfriend when a man spat in his face. When Crain confronted the man, who then said something about "fucking fags", he was jumped by a group of five others Crain described as Moroccan.

Crain2The bashing has sent Amsterdam, which depends heavily on revenue it generates by promising itself as the world's most gay-friendly destination, into a crisis. Amsterdam's Mayor Job Cohen, Arjan reports, promised to track down Crain's attackers and is intent that the incident not damage the city's reputation as one of the most progressive in Europe (or cause it to lost valuable 'pink' tourist dollars to alternate gay favorites Paris and Barcelona). Says Arjan, "The media and the people of the Netherlands are embarrassed and disgusted by this bloody act of aggression."

There has also been much discussion of the fact that the attackers were Moroccan, and the culture wars that have erupted in that city, which Crain himself discusses here. In any case, Amsterdam is still probably safer for gays than other major cities, though Expatica, a news source for expats in the Netherlands, reports that "a survey by gay lobby group COC has found that one in three gays no longer dare to walk hand-in-hand in the city centre."
(thanks Arjan)

  1. While finally admitting flat out that his attack was most nearly almost certainly 100% likely the result of muslim religious intolerance of gays, and while I applaud most wholeheartedly his condemnation of that idiot at the Human Rights Watch, I notice he just can't quite get himself to admit the one obvious solution here:

The Netherlands needs to close its borders to more hopelessly intolerant muslims coming in under its ridiculously lax immigration laws. Further, it needs to start deporting the worst of these islamic thugs that are already there.

The key to getting over one's Liberal Guilt Complex over these measures is just to stop refering to them as "hate." Just call them a "pragmatic necessity brought on by a public safety crisis" if that'll make you feel better.

  2. Cassius, I applaud your remarks. I couldn't have said it better myself.

  3. "ridiculously lax immigration laws"

You really don't have a clue, do you?

The Netherlands is one of the most difficult countries in Europe to immigrate to. I'm an immigrant -- a gay American one -- in the Netherlands, so I should know. It's true that the Netherlands used to have a lax immigration policy -- but that hasn't been the case for at least ten years.

In fact, there are now more non-Dutch residents leaving the Netherlands every year than moving here.

  4. First: Explain how Crain could distinguish a Moroccan from a Turk or an Egyptian or an Algerian? Islamo-dar? I live in Amsterdam. I can't. I know a number of Turkish business owners who are quite cool, but on the street I couldn't tell them from a Morocan if my life depended on it.

Second: Does it not make sense to make oneself aware of cultural issues in a foreign capitol? I know there are neighborhoods in Paris or DC or LA where I and my partner had better indulge in just an extra degree of discretion.

Third: to what degree was "partying" involved? Not to blame the victims, but c'mon. Backrooms and drugs don't exactly contribute to safe passage in unknown territory.

  5. I think you're right. You should send those towel heads to the gas chambers. And when you run out of towel heads, there are still plenty of Jews left. And when you're finished with the jews, you can ship the faggots out. that will solve the problem of gay bashing once and for all.

  6. "Not to blame the victims"

But you just did in points two and three. I find number three especially fun since I doubt you've ever met Chris Crain but feel comfortable asserting he frequents drug-fueled orgies.

  7. Anon, don't be silly... nobody said anything about sending jews to gas chambers, just the "towel head" Muslims. Jews are very tolerant of homosexuals.

  8. Waara is correct. having lived in Holland as an american for many years this attack is horrifying. But th case is that immigration is an enormous issue in this country and to give such a flippant remark is insulting to those of us who know better of it.

  9. You guys all have NO IDEA. Have you ever experienced prejudice? This attack does not deserve glib comments like 'towel heads' or gas chambers - these incident needs to be rectified and the assailants prosecuted or no gay people will visit Amsterdam with thier 'pink pounds'.

  10. The worst thing any foriegn person could do is beat up a white American woman or a blonde gay American man. All hell breaks loose then. An international incident. I just cant imagine this not being an attacked that was provoked, like when Kevin Spacey "got mugged" in the park in London. I'm not saying that people deserve to get beat up but sometimes you cruise the wrong person.

  11. Why does it come as a shock that someone was beaten up in Amsterdam? People in America act as if europe is inhabited by lederhosen wearing hobbits who yodel. We get our images of euroland from Disney and Hollywood. The real europe is that continent where your grandmother escaped the death camp (not science fiction, but for real), started 2 world wars, and attempted to exterminate nearly ever minority that ever walked its land. And this isn't something from the past. Don't forget Bosnia which resulted in the deaths of over 1 million people in 1995!!! It's about time we all started facing up to what the real europe is all about and get our heads out of the clouds. A good question to ask is, why is europe's Muslim population so incapable or unwilling to assimilate. In the USA, middle eastern immigrants are some of the wealthiest and most educated in the country. Why does America do so much better at living with true diversity than the multiculturalists of europe?

  12. I think there is much more to the story than Crain is letting on; anyone on the gay circut party scene has seen Crain in various states of mind altering indulgence to the point where he doesn't even recognize his hometown acuaintances when they say hello; he practically conveyed that he and his boyfriend were sober at 3 am on Saturday in Amsterdam?

  13. I am an American gay muslim. I was called a Paki and a faggot and thrown a beer bottle at in London by a group of white men. I was advised by Dutch friends to not hold hands with my partner outside well known gay areas. It had NOTHING to do with Moroccons at all. In fact my partner (he is Arab) and I felt that over all everyone in A'dam (inclduing Arabs and Surinamese and Africans) seemed either tolerant or pretty used to gay people. Very much like Manhattan, where drag queens and drunk gay men can run into twenty four hour Mamoun's falafal, or Pakistan Kebab House and such places without raising an eyebrow or ire from the Muslim owners.
