road.jpg A new Australian study finds that Catholics are among the least homophobic people in Australia among those who declare a religious affiliation: "These counter-intuitive findings suggest that the Catholic Church has less doctrinal authority over its congregation than some other Christian and non-Christian churches." The least homophobic areas of that country are central Melbourne and central Perth while the areas most unfriendly to gays are central and southwestern Queensland, the areas around Brisbane and western Tasmania.

  1. Makes sense about Queensland, hicksville. That Aussie state was the central of a strong, racist anti-immigrant movement a few years ago. A real scumbag named Hanson (sp?) was leading the charge against Greeks, Italians, Chinese, and brown people. Typical close-minded reaction to difficult economic times: blame the foreigners.

    Uppity convicts; go figure.

  2. This actually makes sense to me. There always seems to be a big gulf between the official Catholic Church doctrines and the attitudes of "everyday" Catholics. They don't seem to bring as much of the judgemental dogma of the church into their everyday lives as much as some other Christian religions do, which tends to be a source of criticizm from non-catholics.
