Do the Right Thing

RainbowstickerA rainbow sticker on the door of a pizzeria in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has sparked an uproar which only goes to show the attention something can get when one wingnut makes a lot of noise.

The sticker was placed on the restaurant's door after an apparent homophobic incident there involving one of its gay patrons. Andrew Shirvell, a Catholic patron, made a complaint and issued a boycott request to his Parish asking them to stop frequenting the establishment: "I find the rainbow flag offensive because it is a symbol of the homosexual movement that, in my opinion, indicates a validation of the homosexual lifestyle, as opposed to a sign that indicates 'openness' to customers who are of the homosexual orientation."

Those who find a rainbow sticker alarming enough to cause this much of a fuss obviously have other issues to deal with— among them perhaps their own latent homosexuality. The operations director of Shirvell's Parish even thinks he's cracked, adding that, "of the people he had spoken to about Shirvell’s statements, he could not find many who agreed with him."

  1. Thanks for the news update, TowleRoad -- found you on referral from BoifromTroy.

While I appreciate you covering this story, was it really necessary to say that the guy was perhaps a "latent homosexual" himself? It's tempting to believe that those who oppose gays do so out of their own sexual issues, and there are some examples of the fact, but I don't really think it's appropriate to constantly insinuate that anyone who does is a closet case.

Anyway, my two cents. Thanks again!

  2. Okay... let me get this straight (no pun intended)

That catholic moron is offended by a rainbow flag, when his own religion uses the symbol of a crucifix, a horrifying instrument used to inhumanely murder thousands?

If I ever have kids one day I'd be a lot more comfortable telling them what the rainbow flag means rather than trying to explain why an emaciated man is nailed to a cross and paraded around churches across the world as some sort of twisted mascot.

  3. Frankly, I'm all for Catholics boycotting restaurants. I just can't eat around those types; they ruin my appetite.
