On this day in 1984 author Truman Capote was found dead in the Los Angeles mansion of Joanne Carson, ex-wife of Johnny Carson. Capote, a movie about the writing of his novel In Cold Blood, opens later this year.

Princeton Review: New College of Florida is campus most accepting of gay students followed by Macalester College of St. Paul, Minnesota; Wellesley College in Massachusetts; Eugene Lang College/New School University in New York City; and Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
The second debate of a proposed amendment to the Massachusetts Constitution that would change gay marriage to civil unions has been set for mid-September. The good news is that it appears some lawmakers are realizing that after over a year of legal same-sex marriage in Massachusetts the world hasn't ended, the sky hasn't fallen. Minds are changing. Rep. Anthony Petrucelli has said this week that he won't vote for the proposal even though he gave his support last year. Petrucelli told Boston's gay paper Bay Windows that gay marriage has "made strong unions among people who have not had the opportunity until that time to get married."

Strangely enough, New College was the first college I looked at when I was touring. It's a nice enough place (and I.M. Pei designed the dorms!), but it was just a little too abstract for me. Not to mention Sarasota's fucking dead when it comes to night life, and the closest thing to "a good time" is Tampa, which is an hour away.

That list of "accepting" colleges does not surprise me..especially the New School...

A movie ABOUT THE WRITING of his novel is being made? What next, a book about the making of the movie about the writing of his novel? Then a movie of that?
It's like when I watched that CBS Martha Stewart movie on Cybil Shepherd. I thought, you know, when they make a TV movie about Cybil Shepherd's life they'll have to show her playing Martha Stewart.
It's like mirrors facing mirrors - the reflections keep on goin'.

My older daughter went to Oberlin and it surprises me that it isn't on the list. I thought Oberlin was about as gay as it gets.
I always felt extremely at home there, welcomed and completely free to be who I am. Clearly, the gay and lesbian students did too. It's a great school.

If 'a good time' requires exclusively gay bars, saunas, cruising areas, and a zona rosa then no, New College's Sarasota location fails on all counts.
On the other hand, the town is broadly welcoming to visual and performing artists and all that implies, so if you count meeting gay people absolutely everywhere - restaurants, cafes, theaters, shopping, at the beach, pubs and clubs - then there's all the night-or-day life you care to take. Bring your platinum card. Billionaires are thick on the ground here.

Andy -- post the least accepting of alternative lifestyles -- betcha Notre Dame tops the list again -- it's like a Catholic concentration camp for gay men -- I know I went there and it is slow to change!

Yay, Macalester! St. Paul is finally good for something. Other than, of course, being the home of Josh Hartnett's parents.

Josh of josh and josh reads towleroad? Wow.. im in the presence of celebrity.
It's nice to see home town school macalaster on the list, but even better is #12, my school, the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Boston, MA (www.olin.edu)! Woot! GO small crazy liberal engineering schools! There might only be 4 gay men (and 6 lesbians?) there.. (I'll make it five when I start saturday), but at least we're now known to be accepting to more! That ranking comes after a lot of hardwork from our schools equivalent to a GSA.. they should be proud of it.
