Rashawn Brazell's Murder Still Unsolved

Rashawn_2

I spotted this poster in the 14th street subway station the other day and it jogged my memory about the still unsolved killing of Rashawn Brazell back in March and again in May. It has been six months since Rashawn's grisly murder in Brooklyn and I don't see this case hitting Nancy Grace anytime soon, so I thought I'd put this out there again.

  1. Andy,

Thanks for caring to continue to spotlight this. For some reason, the MSM just doesn't care to follow up on this story.

  3. Hey Andy et alia,

Thanks for returning to Rashawn Brazell's case. FYI: the Anti-Violence Project's summer newsletter, which I received about two months ago, had this case as its feature. Nothing at that moment had changed in terms of the discovery of his killer and/or killers. Plus, the article discusses how the Anti-Violence Project brokered the segment on Brazell's case for the espisode of "America's Most Wanted" that it will/has appeared on. Interestingly, the newsletter puts the issue in the context of the growing escalation of violence against gays/lesbians/bisexuals/trans-folk in the city and nation because that was the topic of the other featured article in this edition of the newsletter. While I think we all "know" such violence occurs, it is eye-opening to see the statistical documentation indicating that it has *increased* since 2003. Worth a read. Keep up the great stuff, Andy, with the info on companies we should support and, as Jase notes, keeping the "spotlight" on this case.

  4. The fact that this young man's murder has only caused a small ripple (if that) says SO much about where we are.

  5. Thank you for reminding us. Would things be different if he were straight or female or white...what do you think?

  6. Yes, I believe things would, by all statistical and historical data to date, be VERY different if Rashawn had been...yes, Straight, and/or White, and/or even Rich! But to be poor and black and male in today's America--you're often considered the most expendable of US citizens, even by the US Government & US Military machine. I am not at all alarmed at the little main-stream (i.e. White) media attention given to the murder of a young gay African-American male. And recently, Essence magazine printed a very thought provoking and eye-opening expose on the grotesque lacking of media attention given to the scores of African-American Females that disappear each year in the US. We have the Elizabeth Smarts, the Laci Petersons, the Terry Schiavos...etc etc... but if you're Female and Black and under the poverty scales...WATCH OUT!

  7. I e-mailed one of my favorite journalists - Rita Cosby @ MSNBC - I had not heard of this story until I read it hear (I am in Michigan) I hope she picks it up, she has a new show on MSNBC so I thought it might be more likely they would pick up on the story.
