Mixed Messages in Chelsea

Phonebooth1 Phonebooth2

What do these two images have in common?

Phonebooth3 Phonebooth4

They are posted on opposing sides of the same phone booth on Eighth Avenue in Chelsea. I've been meaning to post about this for a while, but this past weekend was the first time in a while that I walked from 23rd to 14th Street on what is arguably the gayest stretch of New York real estate aside from down and out Christopher Street.

Nearly every phone booth on Eighth has either a M4M sex ad on it, or an anti-crystal meth ad. Many booths carry both. The battle of the billboards is downright depressing.

  1. How are these billboards in conflict with each other? It's possible to use manhunt AND avoid crystal meth. I do it all the time. Let's not demonize sex okay? Leave that to the religious right.

  2. Hm, other Rob, I think Andy is trying to point out that these two ads, when run together like this, imply that gay men are crystal meth users.

"What do they have in common?" Why are they being run together like that? I'm sure some gay men are crystal meth users, but there are better, more uplifting things to post messages about or advertise.

  3. I think they are symbolic. They are TWO things that our community should avoid like the plague. Well, in my mind at least. I am not a "hook-up" boy! I hate 'em. But, they happen, and so does crystal meth use. However, at least hooking up can be done safely, and "tina" can not...ugh....

  4. I'm not demonizing sex here, just commenting on a relationship that can't help but be perceived walking down Eighth Avenue, whether it bears out in reality or not. I'm sure many will argue that online sex sites are breeding grounds for crystal use and unsafe sex while others take your perspective, which is also completely valid.

  5. Or maybe the booth advertising company are actually really clever and post things like this intentionally to instigate debate on the subject(s), much like what we're all doing right here. If they're that clever, they must be gay.

  6. Sorry Roy, but you're wrong. "Tina", like virtually every other drug used by mankind over the years, CAN be used safely and in moderation by many people, and has been for decades. Certainly there are others who suffer from overuse of amphetemines via physical or psychological addiction, just as there are many who drink or smoke or get stoned too much. But when people make absolute statements about the ill-effects of any drug, its scary 'cause it seems to indicate that they're falling for the hype, rather than evaluating the truth.

Amphetamine addition is not pretty. But neither is lung cancer, alcoholism, morbid obesity or Christian conversativism. Society is makes rather random choices about what indulgences it criminalizes, often with little balancing of amount of relative damage they do. Vast resources are then gathered to engage in a propaganda war against ("meth mouth" "Reefer Madness") or for ("Absolut Propaganda" "the Marlboro man").

We live in a society that loves to demonize (certain kinds) of drug use -- particularly when they can be associated with icky things like sex or homosexuality. Anti-drug hysteria sells magazines and keeps hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people employed in anti-drug operations and prisons.

I'm not saying that you need to support drug use, but everyone needs to be aware that most of the information put out about drug use in this country has been produced as PERSUASIVE material -- not as factual reporting. Take a look at John Tierney's op-ed piece in today's NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/09/opinion/09tierney.html) for an interesting discussion in this regard of the so-called "meth crisis".

    Posted by: Scott | Aug 9, 2005 1:33:27 PM

  7. Sorry, Scott, but there is a huge difference between the effects of drugs like meth and heroin and the effects of drugs like alchohol and marjuana. There is a difference.
Compare a pothead to a meth addict. Meth is much more addictive and physically dangerous. It is a fact.

    Posted by: brett | Aug 9, 2005 1:57:13 PM

  8. "Used moderately and safely"? This is the toxic shit you're putting in yr body:

    Q.  What ingredients are used to make meth?

    A.  Over-the-counter cold and asthma medications containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, red phosphorous, hydrochloric acid, drain cleaner, battery acid, lye, lantern fuel, and antifreeze are among the ingredients most commonly used.

    Posted by: Deschanel | Aug 9, 2005 2:03:46 PM

  9. Scott is right, to a point.

You cannot pass judgment on meth users and then give compulsive sexual behavior a pass.

Both are harmful and addictive. Some people can handle one or the other, or both, but most can't.

"Using drugs is wrong not simply because drugs create medical problems; it is wrong because drugs destroy one's moral sense. People addicted to drugs neglect their duties." - Bill Bennett

I'm not a Bennett fan, but he's right about this and the same applies to sex.

    Posted by: Mitch | Aug 9, 2005 2:10:43 PM

  10. Mitch Please don't quote Bill Bennett about addictions in light of his addiction to gambling

    Posted by: Donald | Aug 9, 2005 2:54:01 PM

  11. Donald, Bennett's personal failings doesn't make the statement any more or less true.

    Posted by: Mitch | Aug 9, 2005 3:00:10 PM

  12. On the contrary, I would think Bennett's particular addiction would give him keener insight, and make his statement on the general subject that much more authoritative.

Some of the more ridiculous, idiotic and stupid statements I have ever heard on the subject of drug abuse came from people who, upon gentle questioning, admitted they in fact never used drugs themselves.

    Posted by: Cassius | Aug 9, 2005 3:02:48 PM

  13. Mitch that may be true but it is false moralizing coming from him.

    Posted by: Donald | Aug 9, 2005 3:07:11 PM

  14. People can use 'tina' safely?
Sounds like someone who's taken too much 'tina.' Coz there's nothing safe about crystal meth.

    Or about compulsive anonymous sex.

    Or Bill Bennett.

Or these days, walking through Chelsea on your way to a club, esp. if you're black.

    ...sigh....

    Posted by: Dave | Aug 9, 2005 3:18:12 PM

  15. It is completely unclear to me how someone can say that a drug that you mix/make/bake whatever in your kitchen (as if you actually know what your doing) can be used safely and in moderation. That crap rots your brain - period.

Sorry, but that sounds like a HUGE rationalization for behavior you know is wrong and harmful. And for the record, I'd say the same about compulsive sexual behavior - gay or straight.

    Posted by: hoyaboy | Aug 9, 2005 3:25:13 PM

  16. I have a solution. Avoid Chelsea.

  17. I agree with the Times' Op-ed piece to a point. I have always been a realist about drugs, and I cringe at the hypocrisy embedded in our society's view towards them. That said, to deny there is a meth crisis in our community is exactly that: denial. OK - crisis is way too dramatic a word, but whatever word you would like to replace it with, we are still referencing an alarming twist in the culture of our community. The two ads on the phone booth are about two facets of this community's culture that feed each other in a vicious cycle. Please note that I am trying not to make too-broad generalizations. In fact, referring to 'our community's culture' will no doubt fire up some defenses, because OF COURSE not everyone has used tina, or hooks up, or cruises on line. but those with minds truly open to discussions about these issues have to realistically deal with the synergy(?) between online hookups and tina. my take: tina makes people horny. it also makes people practical about finding sex in order to satisfy their sex crave. so: what's more practical than finding sex online? you put your best face/pix on, and hunt for exactly what you're in the mood for. the cruising sites have designed interfaces that are as addictive as video games if not more so, because they feed on desires that are super-heightened by the tina the users are smoking while they click away. again: not every tina user cruises online, and not every online cruiser is on drugs: but just from my own personal experience, more often than not, those looking for sex on line are being fueled by drugs. period. there's not really a way around that.
i think propaganda of any sort, whether it's political or health-related, is in general ineffective to the audiences these ads are trying to reach. Everyone knows when they read propaganda that it's just that: propaganda. So the receptive part of their concsiences turns off and instead the viewer takes in the artwork/entertainment value. Not that all propaganda is wrong. Yes - people should be educated about what they are doing to themselves, but in a calm and factual way. Scaremongering is SO late 80s. This comment is way too long, so I'm stopping, but would be happy to continue a dialogue about these issues through email or whatever. peace.

  18. Scott,

Having personally witnessed Meth destroy the lives of many people around me, and turn formerly fun lving beauties into paranoid skeletors, I can say with no hesitation that you are wrong, and you need to get a fucking clue.

The problem with meth is that when people first start using it, the use is not obvious to those around them. By the time it becomes visible, it is too late - the user is suffering from an addiction that robs the user of all self worth. Don't tell me otherwise, I've seen it.

Now you may say that alcohol too can destroy lives, and that is true, but the speed and ruthlessness with which meth operates puts it in a class all by itself.

Is it possible to use the drug and not become an addict...sure. It is also possible to get fucked up the ass by every whore in town and not cathc something. But is that somethign you would recommend? I hope not.

  19. Meth can be safe if used in moderation?

    *inserts over-used cliche about denial*

Posted by: Mac Adkins | Aug 9, 2005 4:05:21 PM

  20. i'm not sure i like the word 'propaganda' in reference to this discussion. propaganda is political term, and what we are really dealing with here is salesmanship. one ad is selling the flesh industry, always a ripe market on 8th avenue, and the other is selling the current brand of non-profit scare-mongering and touchy-feely community activism. Make no mistake, though, both ads are designed for one purpose: making money. One gets it from you, the online slut, and the other gets it from the government, in the form of emergency grants to fight this 'epidemic'.

does any of this negate the powerful and often debilitating effects of either of the services offered? Not at all. Just remember, if we're not buying it, they'll stop selling it.

    it's really that simple.

  21. Crystal meth is horrible. My ex couldnt pick which he wanted more, me or the meth. So I chose for him and showed him the door. Now his new partner has the same problem. Meth not only ruined him, but my trust of relationships. It hurts more than just the user.

    Posted by: Butch | Aug 9, 2005 4:38:39 PM

  22. I'm not advocating that anyone use meth. In fact, I don't use meth. What I'm advocating is HONESTY in discussions about meth or any other drug. Sometimes meth will kill you and/or ruin your life. Sometimes it won't (and, whether people like it or not there ARE people whose meth use is moderated and not ruining their lives, careers or relationships. Maybe they're dumb for taking the risk, but it's patently absurd to claim that meth is killing/ruining EVERYONE who uses it.)

My point is that we can't possibly make proper decisions about how to handle issues about any drug as long as the debate is based on faux-panic about a "crisis" that's been declared for political or media reasons. One of the scariest things in this country is the willingness of its citizenry to be manipulated by fear -- giving up freedoms and abandoning meaningful public debate because someone "in charge" has said that there is a "crisis" that must be handled. The political right has mastered this technique. Sometimes a so-called "crisis" is really just a "problem" that will be best resolved by thoughtful investigation and discussion of the real facts involved. Racing to arrest 7-11 operators in Georgia for selling Sudaphed OTC isn't going to do anything to really help those with a meth problem, any more than sending Tommy Chong to prision for selling bongs slowed down the use of pot. It's just stupid ignorant American politics and it makes me crazy -- whether it's about meth, Iraq or homosexuality.

  23. I love how there's a White Party ad in the column to the right of this conversation.

    Anybody going this year?

    Posted by: Mitch | Aug 9, 2005 6:19:28 PM

  24. Scott- I am not advocating panic, but it seems to me you are painfully unaware of the toll this drug is taking on not just us, but Americans in general.

Personlly, I think the way to lessen the use of this drug is to attach shame to it. A few years ago it was glamourous to use "tina" - see it even has a cute name. Well I won't call it tina. And I'll point out to everyone who uses it that it is far from glamourous.

What I certainly will not do is add to the problem by saying, well gee, some people use it with no problems at all! Because those people are far outweighed by those who are ruined, and the costs of this drug are too much to make light of it. So you should stop doing that.

Not all drugs are equally bad/good. Some can be used without long term problems. Some can help people be creative or inspired.

    Meth isn't that drug.

  25. Remember the 90's? They started out so happy. the music was happy and people were smiling in the clubs because they were all high on ecstacy. Not so bad, right? Then GHB came along, and suddenly people were accidentally dropping dead in the clubs. GMHC had to permanently cancel the Fire Island Morning Party because of all the overdoses, losing their biggest fundraising event. Pretty soon GHB became socially unacceptable. You don't hear about it anymore, because everyone figured out that nobody needed to have quite that much fun. Anyone who still uses it is probably too embarrassed to tell anyone, and they should be. Then Crystal came to the east coast, and all the early morning club smiles turned to gritted teeth and bug eyes. I hope more people don't have to kill themselves before it becomes socially unacceptable as well. I think the tide has turned. More and more people are realizing that it is not worth the risk. Nobody who has seen a friend struggle with addiction would ever say that it can be used safely. It is a powerful and destructive substance, emotionally and physically. For a supposedly social drug it is incredibly anti-social and isolating. Have you ever seen someone at the end of a few days of crystal meth bingeing? It's frightening. Sure, some people can use it and walk away, but some can't. But that's the way it is with most drugs. They can be a fun party, or an endless nightmare depending on who you are and whether you have educated yourself about what you are doing.

  26. Well I have to say that equating these two issues with each other is an advertizers win if it sparks debate like this.

I recently had a roommate, who only lasted a week, who was on Tina... He lied to me, blew up emotionally at little things (such as being awake at noon on a Saturday), would stay in his room all day and when he did exit he was coated in sweat and jittery. He disappeared for a week during which he missed his rent payment and the late period and I tossed his ass out.

So, in my experience.. Tina = Bad.

Any drug that gives you an unnatural high all the time so you don't have to deal with reality can't be all good for you.

    Posted by: Darren | Aug 10, 2005 7:35:49 AM

  27. First off, I am an admitted pot head. LOL POT is great. Love it. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew it. It was one of the largest exports of the colonies. The fibers for rope etc...the oil for food, the buds for medicine. Before old georgy boy died (strep throat...well the leeches, and the hot irons really did him in...the cure was worse than the problem) he was given marijuana as a pain reliever.

To compare tina, cooked up in a kitchen from poisonous chemicals, to natural organicaly grown marijuana(which has been part of human civilization for over 5,000 years first grown in Babylon and UR the first cities) is ridiculous.

Anyway; Tina in no way ever can be safely taken as a recreational drug. Once started there are truly only 2 options....1) recovering tina user (swears off the stuff)....2) dead

I won't be a hypocrite and say I haven't tried it. I was a kid once, but 1 time was more than enough to know that "shit" kills. I felt like crap afterward and the only way to feel better was to do more. Everyone told me "just take more to get over the withdrawl hangover". That was enough for me to know to never ever touch the stuff again. I have never heard of anyone ever having a pot hangover. Just munchies, intense spiritual sex, and wanting sleep. LOL

Hooking up is also the path to death. AIDS has not been cured yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOOLS. Sorry, but we do not have to be PC while debating in house. Leave the PC debates for when talking with non-family members. In house, lets be honest. AIDS has not been cured yet, herpes would be a bitch to get, etc.

Again I won't be a hypocrite and say I haven't hooked up. BUT I did that when I came out at 16. Hooking up is kids stuff. To continue to hook up past 20 is crazy ( let alone lie to yourself so much that you don't come out till after the teen years...and let me not even get into those who don't come out till 30s+...crazy self delusional liars)

Anyway; TINA and hook ups are killing too many of us. It is crazy. It is fodder for the religous wackos to condemn us. They point at us not looking for love but looking for anonymous sex (signifys a deep psychological need.....inbalance...needing self affirmation because of low self esteem. Ugly people hook up. Good looking people look for relationships). They also point at our self destruction via tina and say "they hate themselves"

We need to police our own community otherwise we just give fodder to the wackos to condemn us. They are watching us. They are looking for anything to point out to those who would support us if it wasn't for some of our own communities crazy ass shit.

I will get off my soap box now. :-)

The rambelings of a pot head. LOL

  28. Scott

There should be a panic. There should be more people talking about the fact that this drug destroys people and lives. Yes it destroys the lives of those who have addictive 'personalities', and not those who can put it down.

Do you have statistics about the increase in usage? Have you seen the latest reports from sherrif's agencies around the country? How can you possibly say that this is just a problem when it's obvious that it's infected not just gay america, but rural america, suburban america.

With the crack epidemic we were able to get a handle on it because of the concentration of addicts being mainly in urban environments. Crystal on the other hand is everywhere and done by more people than you could ever imagine.

To say it's nothing but a problem shows how little you know about the subject.

Thankfully I was able to see the error of my ways after my last bender, which was after I was arrested and had to go through the legal system. Have you ever used it? Do you use it now? Because I'm telling you, the others I can handle. I don't like them. Crystal grabbed a hold of me and hasn't let go, I have to deal with it every day and one wrong move can bring it all back on. So don't tell me it's just a problem.

    Posted by: mason | Aug 10, 2005 2:03:58 PM

  29. Scott

I'm not sure how recent this report is, but it is fairly good and indepth.

    http://www.nida.nih.gov/ResearchReports/methamph/methamph.html

Crystal meth isn't a gay issue, it's everyone's issue. If you could see the increase in lab busts here in Colorado, including a house where people were tortured if they couldn't pay, you would see why it's getting the coverage it does.

Simply by trying to downplay it, you make it worse. No matter how many times you say that you're not advocating people to use it. The brush off is worse than not talking about it.

  30. Why do they still have phone booths in NYC, espec on Bottoms Boulevard?....trust, every queen has a slim cellie pasted to her ear post gym you would think they would have taken the valuable real estate the booths are taking up and turned them in to porto-johns like they have in Paris!! If I have to wait in line at the Big Cup one more friggin time staring at that preciously imprisoned Barbie doll en route to a #2 I'm gonna go mental! Wait I already have :O

  32. well, this whole issue has pretty much jumped the shark since NBC News already has an in-house scare-graphic for "METH IN AMERICA" The epidemic will be televised.

yes, addiction is a cruel painful process that results in loss, death and collateral damage. this is true of meth addicts, alcoholics, gamblers, and sometimes even raging potheads. i've seen people destroy their lives over sleeping pills. i'm not equivocating here, but you have to keep your head and realize that shame is actually NOT an effective deterrent, otherwise none of those problems would exist. and certainly, homosexuality itself would have a hard time if shame were all that were necessary to destroy something.

we haven't cured AIDS yet?? crap.

  33. There are so many rants on this page to which I totally disagree that I probably am going to chime in here again. For now I would like to start by sharing with you some facts rather than thoughts, beliefs or positions. The site advertised is M4M-USA.com and I am the site director. There are 21,311 member ads in NYC metro area as of today. This morning I searched the contents of those ads for all references to crystal meth, such as pnp, tina, T, chem friendly etc. There were 1646 that made mention of a drug related term. Of those, 934 had the phrase “no pnp” or “not into pnp” “I don’t pnp”. I then had staff read the remaining 712 ads, of which another 219 were anti-drug. That left 493 ads that “liked to pnp” or were “looking to pnp” or with whom “pnp ok” etc. There were probably 50 extremely pro pnp ads. So at least on our site is concerned. 2.3% of member ads are vocally pro Tina, 5.4% or anti-Tina and the rest were silent.

And this is not because we edit out pro-drug language or advocate against it. Our members have been assured of two things. M4M does not censor their ads and M4M will not invade their privacy. So they may write whatever they like as long as it accurately represents who they are, does not solicit minors, or offer sex in exchange for compensation (including drugs), does not advocate the commission of an act that would endanger the life of another and is not a statement or act that violates another’s human rights. We do not try to dictate behavior or edit communication. I am aware that competing sites with a much larger drug using membership base have found it necessary to censor ads in the hopes of changing their constituency.

ON THE OTHER HAND, some of you guys have an unbelievably narrow perspective on gay sex and addiction, so much so that I am actually shocked and saddened simultaneously. GAY SEX is not so inevitably tied to drugs that to want it often and with a lot of different partners one has to be a drug fiend. And being comfortable with sleeping with strangers or having sex often is not in of itself compulsive or addictive behavior. Many gay men enjoy promiscuous sex as a fun, recreational, and indeed wholesome hobby. The gay liberation movement of the 60’s and 70’s was about living sexually free from the rules and restrictions created by the heterosexual community over thousands of years to foster stable community and family structures for the purpose of having children and populating the earth. And the fact that some countries and states are making the necessary legal changes to allow same sex couples to participate in the very same breeding process is very nice. BUT IT IS NOT GAY. The sad thing is hearing so much anti-sex rhetoric coming from young gay men. I was part of the great sexual liberation of the 70s (not the 60’s!), and eventually lost many of my closest friends to AIDS in the 80’s. But I know that sex didn’t kill them. It was lack of knowledge, medical ineptitude, political insensitivity, and bad luck that killed them. We know how to have sex safely, so why all of the anti-sex sentiment? Is it just fear?

IF YOU HAVE CONCLUDED THAT I MUST BE SOME SORT OF SEXUAL ADDICT THAT BUILT M4M for my own sexual addiction, then let me debunk you of that thought. I created M4M in 1998 while still in a one to one committed relationship which lasted for 21 years (1979-2000). And I have never had a date off of my web site in NY (I do admit using it on occasion when traveling on the West Coast). I TELL YOU THIS BECAUSE YOU ARE MISSING BOTH THE POINT AND THE FUN of a place such as M4M. It’s for no-strings sexual hookups, be you in relationship or a sex addict or just a plain old single man, be you sober or a drug addict or a boy who likes cocktails but only after 5. Everyone is invited and we are all adult so we can choose for ourselves who we want to partner with for the night or for the rest of our life or somewhere in between. It is the complete opposite from the traditional heterosexual world of dating and marriage. Why? Because it’s the way one can be if one is GAY. It has nothing to do with drugs or sexual addiction. It has everything to do with being part of a community, THE GAY COMMUNINITY. In fact the only way that a gay man can define himself as identical to all other gay men is in how we sexually socialize.

I have gone on long enough. I close this with two more facts/statistics from our site. In a survey of members undertaken last year, only 4% of our members said they log in and hook up for sex daily. 11% said they logged in 3-6 times a week. The remaining 85% said they logged in anywhere from once a month to twice a week. Of the 435 NY members who cancelled their ads in the last three months, 131 in their exit survey said they were quitting because they had met someone and they were now boyfriends and did not, at least for now, need further use of the site. And finally, much of the activity undertaken by members who know how best to work the system, is not about being drug addicted and obsessing on the site. M4M provides a whole bunch of tools for “farming” so to speak, that is for getting to know other members over time before one writes “wanna fuck now”. Of course, people sometimes take that very direct route with their first communication--but that happens mostly at 3 am on Sunday morning.

In fact all of our newest online tools are about allowing members to meet men without spending hours alone on line in your bedroom. Its about having M4M run in the background why you go about your life, working, exercising, seeing friends or pursuing other interests--but when you want it, there is someone easily found, right there on your Mobile phone, or outside your office door at 5pm or after you come home with a night out on the town with friends. We are not designed for the sexually addictive and we are not the first, second or even fifth choice for the heavy drug user. We are designed for men who are sexually liberated---men who are GAY.

  34. That's an awfully polished defense of your site, Steven, and one I imagine you have had to use more than once recently. But I for one appreciate the fact that you are trying to dispel some of the myths associated with your brand of "sexually liberated" gay life. The rumors about your site are legion, the most titillating of which was the one I heard about the site being quietly purchased by the authorities to track gay crystal/sex patterns. I treat these as they should be treated, with a wary eye and much skepticism. But even you can't deny the link that your site has created, at least in the popular imagination, between the online bathhouse scene and the pnp community of NYC. I imagine that is why you have so many facts and figures related to the issue at hand.

As a devout libertarian, I fully support the right for a site such as M4M-USA.com to exist and be a player in the gay scene. I also support the right for an establishment such as the West Side Club to turn a profit catering to the needs of horny men in the city. Far be it for me, a sexually liberated man myself, to deny anyone the right to express their desires in any sordid way they deem necessary.

Nevertheless, I also support an open and free dialogue within the gay community to examine and critique its own patterns and faultlines. You seem to be insinuating that to be GAY is to be "sexually liberated", and then conflate your role in the community as a conduit for instantaneous sexual gratification as a necessary adjunct. You have every right to believe this, but I would caution against the hubris involved in such an equation. You are a business, first and foremost, and in part your business model relies on the tweekers who flood your site every Sunday at 3am. You may find that your recent PR campaign to represent yourself as a "community" networking forum will backfire if the tweekers decide there is a less obvious place to make their plans with one another.

Your willingness to jump into a forum such as this and defend yourself is notable, however, and a welcome contribution to the dialogue.

  35. To equate sleeping with mulitple partners to sexual liberation is absurd.

Sexual liberation is accepting yourself. feeling comfortable with your body and the body of a partner, being able to express one's sexuality openly and honestly, and a willingness to explore more than the missionary position.

Sleeping with mutliple partners when not a tenneager anymore is just down right trashy, sluty, and YES a sign of deep seated self hate, low self esteem, and serious psychological issues. Also very dangerous....like I said earlier. We have not cured aids yet. Personaly I like myself too much to risk my life with a stranger. If i need an orgasm and do not have a boyfriend at the moment then my hand will suffice. If I need to feel my worth validated then i simply look at myself in the mirror and or meditate.

Why do you wish to sleep with multiple annonymous partners? Why do you need to use that as self affirmation. it is sad in fact. Sad that you are so weak. sad that you can not open yourself to being in a relationship, sad that you need as many people as possible to affirm your worth by sleeping with you.

Sleeping with multiple partners is actualy the oppisite of sexual liberation. It is self oppresion. A psychological fix you need....... to make yourself feel attractive because for some reason you do not feel attractive. for some reason you need multiple annonimous partners to give you worth instead of finding worth in yourself and the worth in making yourself emotionaly vulnerable to 1 person.

Hell, find a boyfriend, go for a hike together in the woods, smoke a joint and become one with nature while having great sex. (lovers can have great hot hard impersonal animalistic sex.....even more so than strangers....afterward they get the benifit of cuddeling) then you will see that tina and hook ups are empty shadows that can never satisfy.

Hell...tying up a lover to a tree using ivy and tickeling them like crazy as the sun beats down on your naked butt is way way way more fun than anything you can come up with doing with a stranger. even more fun if a rain storm moves in and drenches you both. Hookups can not ever equal that kind of fun sex. EVER

just more rambelings from an admited pot head. LOL

  36. Sex is not the problem!

The problem is the pattern of ignorance, poor decision making, and frankly, stupidity, behind the rise of drug use and unsafe sex in the gay community.

You can censure the bathhouses and the websites all you want, but in the end, drug use will continue, barebacking will continue, and the debate will go on and on and on. (San Francisco -- and many other cities -- closed their bathhouses in the 80s. Did that stop the epidemic?!?!?)

Suggesting that the solution to HIV and drug use is to radically curtail sex (and push gay men into monogamous marriages) is to miss the point…

The point is NOT to scold men who want to enjoy healthy sexual encounters with as many men as they wish, or the businesses that provide help connecting those people.

Rather it is the fact that the community needs to band together and find the resources to educate, help, and provide services for the men who, in a self-destructive moment, have been taken in by the horrible addictive qualities of "gay crack".

  37. It suprises me that so many Gay people believe that the majority of illegal substances should be outlawed. I see this as hypocracy and ignorance. I believe that people should be able to do what they want, wherever they want - as long as they don't hurt or kill another in the process! (I will repeat - ANYONE ELSE in the process - what people do to themselves is their own business) And of course I can't forget Euthenasia - there is no reason why Dr. Kevorkian should not be able to practice his trade of putting people out of their misery and pain at their own request.

I can't believe that a group of people who have partaken in their fare share of mind altering substances would suddenly point the finger at others and tell them what is right or wrong. Who the hell is anybody in this community or on this earth to tell anyone what they can or cannot do? It was (or is) OK for you guys to go out and get piss ass drunk whenever you wanted or to smoke weed or to drop acid, etc. but all of a sudden you are going to tell others that they cannot partake in their drug of choice? That is just plain wrong. You don't like it when someone tries to tell you how to live your life so don't do it to someone else.

All of our jails are bursting at the seams because approximately 85% of the inmates are there for drug related offenses. This sickens me! Can you imagine how much better off this society would be if we legalized drugs (or at least DECRIMINALIZE them)? We wouldn't have to wage this ficticious "War On Drugs" or fill prisons or build new ones. The money could instead be spent on education and making a better community.

I could expand on this opinion but in order to save space I will end it here. I have made my point.

  38. I will tell you!!!!!!!! Who am I??? A man with a brain!!!!
    Tina is poison.
There is no comparison what so ever between chemicals cooked up in a dirty kitchen and natural pot, shrooms, morning glory seeds (halucinogen first used by the aztecs by the way)whatever........
Natural drugs have been with mankind since the begining (most likely influenced the evolution of our monkey brains into the seats of godhood they now are....."Man...in comprehension, how like unto a god") Read a book and learn about it.

TINA.....Might as well drink draino and get it done with.

Someone mentioned 'safe' hook ups. NO SUCH THING exists. The need for hook ups your having is a symptom of a deep seated UNHEALTHY psychological problem. get counseling.
No matter how many condoms you might wear.....stiking your toungue down a strangers throat will still give you herpes etc.

And lets be honest.......You have NOT!!!!!!!!! been 100% safe with each and everyone of your hook ups. Don't lie. be honest. many of your hook ups did not involve a condom. more than you might like....but be honest. Especialy when tina comes into play. A huge thing tina does is lower inhibitions.

Maybe part of my rant is due to the fact that familiarity breeds contempt. Not being vain, just being honest. It is no challenge to get a hook up in a dark bar where booze has been flowing freely. Hell, less than 3 seconds from walking in the front door for me at least. How boring!!!!!!!!!

If you need as much sex as you can from strangers to make you feel attractive then get your ass to a plastic surgeon and a gym. Also read a book and make yourself attractive.

Who am I to judge??? someone who did it when 16....found out that the tepid milquetoast of hook ups does not compare in any way to the ambrose "meat and drink of the gods" relationships. Even if a relationship does not last....it is still greater by far than any number of hook ups.

boo hoo you didn't come out till you were in your late 20's. so you need to do the hook up thing to feel like a gay teenager which you didn't get to experience. sorry that you lied to yourself for so long.....That is your problem. just another sign that you have deep seated psych problems and need counseling.

    Who am I to judge??
An attractive (don't need hook ups to make me feel attractive) HUMAN male with a brain.
I am being some what cruel during this IN HOUSE DEBATE...if religous wackys were present i would side with you. You might be a sob...but you are our sobs.....and we should publicly stand together. BUT!!!!!!! In house, all gloves are off. No need to pussy foot around.

Tina is poison!!!!! plain and simple....
Hook ups are usualy a sign of deep seated inferiority complexes

if you must have drugs then by all means go the natural way. If you need to feel more attractive than you are.........then make yourself so.

  44. You guys watch to many Tom Gresham movies or too much Oprah. Your assumptions about bathhouse owners or website entrepreneurs as slick amoral profit-mongers ‘preying’ on the innocent are dramatic but unfounded. I have never written to a blog before nor do we have a staffed public relations department that spews position pieces and puts spins on everything. I leave such practices to the Republicans—my staff isn’t so talented.

    DRUGS
And the anti-sex rants reek of Reefer Madness. Most things, done in moderation, are not harmful. Since when did compulsive sexual behavior become defined as someone who has sex outside of a relationship? Casual sex, even on a multiple times a week basis, is not compulsive, so long as one is not a slave to it. If for example a man plays golf every weekend or works out at a gym every night after work but he freely gives it up to help out a friend or to handle an especially tough week at the office, then he is not exhibiting compulsive behavior. People would say of such a person that golf or working out is his “passion”, how he likes to spend his time off whenever he gets the chance. But if he told the friend in need that he had to go to the gym and could not help or went off to play golf knowing that work deadlines had passed then we would say he is self-centered or irresponsible and he is a compulsive person.

It’s no different when it comes to those who have chosen “having sex” as their “sport”. And sexual compulsion and drug addiction is not the same thing. I once believed that the gay community was unique. The people I knew used recreational drugs and with rare exception did it in moderation and without becoming addicted. They knew when to play and when to work and when they were skating too close to the edge they knew when to take a break. This was my own experience with and among my own friends twenty years ago. AS I SAID THIS IS WHAT I USED TO BELIEVE. Now I believe something different when it comes to Tina and certain other drugs. Many people, though not all, despite good intentions, lose control over the drug and the drug controls them. The problem is, you have no way of knowing which type of person you are until you try. And now I believe that it’s not worth the risk no matter which way the probabilities are running. BUT THIS IS MY OWN PERSONAL VIEW FOR MY SELF AND, YOU CANNOT SAY THIS IS MY BELIEF FOR YOU. I MAKE NO CONCLUSIONS FOR YOU AND IT IS A DIFFERENT CONCLUSION THEN I PREVIOUSLY HELD.

    SEX
I would never lecture another on their sexual behavior or their position as to the use of drugs. But my views of sex have not changed while my views on drugs have. And I believe I am doing the world a service by offering a venue for men to meet for sex—a better place than the sex clubs, disco’s with back rooms or sex in the balcony, bathhouses and peep booths—places that I admit playing in, even meeting my boyfriend (specifically at a club called “12 West” in January 1979, I was 20) with whom I shared 21 years. I didn’t do M4M because I thought it would make me a lot of money. I had the opportunity to do plenty of other things that would make me a hell of a lot more money. I will spare you the resume of careers. Suffice it to say I’ve made enough money in prior careers to know that making money is not in and of itself adequate reward--although I do like getting paid. The job that was the most fun also resulted in me loosing my entire investment of $500,000 in 6 months’ time.

I did M4M because I love sex and I love the guiltless permission I am able to give myself to have it when I want it because I am gay and I am single (once again) and want to encourage other people to have lots of it. Not by lecturing or preaching but simply by providing a space and letting others choose. And you learn a hell of a lot more about someone on my site before having sex with them than you ever did in a backroom. M4M merely exists. It is each individual who chooses with whom and how often. And I view each potential user as having the same ability that I exercise—meaning that I never sit there as a non-committed come-what-may person. It is still my choice to choose among men who I prefer to spend time with or to take a pass and go to bed. And it is in this way that I shape my own life according to my current beliefs. And if I lead by example and it helps another. Good. But remember I did not intend to. Each man must find his own path and learn his own lessons. We can only be of service to another if support is freely requested. To do otherwise is to be a “do-gooder” a “preacher” a person with a position as to what is morally right and what is morally wrong. And when we are talking about one’s self-behavior (as opposed to acts of commission such as robbery or murder) members of a free society should know they have only to choose for themselves.
