Out for Blood

Hellbent

Hellbent2I tried to go see Hellbent (one of Towleroad's sponsors) last night but got there twenty minutes before the screening and it was full. Otherwise, you'd be getting my review. I hear it's pretty good though. Check out the trailer and other goodies here. It opens tomorrow.

Hellbent is billed as the first gay slasher flick. Cathy over at Cityrag directed me to this great post over at fourfour which shoots down that claim, dissecting A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part 2 in sexy, gorey, gay detail.

Sex and horror go hand in hand. What would a slasher movie be without some pretty flesh to be shredded? It looks like Hellbent has got plenty of it. Maybe the sequel could be called Kill Abercrombie?

  1. I was able to see Hellbent when it screened back in April at the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival...it's great eye-candy [dark-haired hottie Andrew Levitas happens to appear shirtless MANY times throughout the movie] & it really is kinda scary (plus bloody!)

Not as deep and meaningful as "Mysterious Skin", but FUN. The Miami audience loved it.

The director (who attended the screening) was absolutely charming when he introduced the film also. And, no, this movie is WAY more gay than any "Nightmare" movie ever was.

Plus, the "punk...queer...LA rock" soundtrack features all gay, lesbian and transgendered bands. It rocks!!

  2. saw HB, at last years Philadelphia Gay Film Festival. Great flick. MEt the hunky actor from the film. Really one of the better Gay horror flicks that seem to be coming out lately.

  5. "Gay for gay sake cinema"...I totally agree. There are a lot of shitty gay movies out there.

  6. Actually, definitely not gay for gay sake. It is the problem with most gay genre movies. But this is as intelligently done as any slasher movie gets. And the fact that it happens to be a gay slasher movie is a bonus. I saw it last Tuesday at the L.A. premiere and afterwards it was pretty clear that the audience was surprised that it was actually a well crafted gay movie...or rather a movie that just happened to be gay.

  7. I am hoping it opens here in the UK although I can't seem to find the dates.

And which one slept with the director to get a part?

  9. Hellbent played at the 2004 SF Gay Film Festival the same night as Pride. I didn't see it, as it had bad reviews on imdb.com, but a friend who saw said it was horrible and the audience agreed. I've seen the trailer twice now in front of 2046 (a far better film, as is Mysterious Skin; I can't believe anyone would mention Mysterious Skin in the same context! Greg Araki is so much better), and anyways, the trailer looked like a home movie. Typical eye candy, which I don't mind, but it'd be nice to have it backed up by a decent film (the standard would have to be Angels in America, Patrick Wilson, yum).

  10. How long until we read interviews with all the actors where they claim that they are aggressively heterosexual, but just reall love their gay fans?

  11. Let me first clarify something.."Hellbent" is in fact the first ALL GAY CHARACTER horror/slasher film. All others have simply had a pathetic gay character who makes gays look bad. Lets at least say bravo to a film that has hunky masculine gay characters who are in control of the situation. enough of the wimpering loser roles like "Nightmare" had

  13. OK, just got back from the Friday, September 16, 7:15pm screening at the Harvard Exit Cinema in Seattle.

All I can say is: solid as Sears.

That was one well-made film. Scary, somewhat titillating (erotically, emotionally and intellectually) and cinematographically captivating.

The lead character looked like a really faggy Ruud Van Nistelrooy ( www.manutd.com ) but he did a great job managing a particularly fortuitous prostheses.

The supporting cast ran the gamut from preterantuarally lucky, underbite-saddled, puddin'-faced twink to an "Is he tweaking?" hot Latino and then on to a male model experimenting with "LA Confidential"-style drag. Against all odds, they add up to a reasonably likeable bunch who earn our interest in their story arc.

Line of the night" "I'll never do drag again."

But I won't give away anymore...except to say that "Ruud"'s trick for the evening ("Jake") is, well, probably the most perfect expression of what I think a man can be that I've seen in cinema to date (I reserve my right to change that when I finally see Jake getting corned by Heath in "Brokeback Mountian.") That shot of him regarding an indisposed Eddie while smoking a cigarette is hotter than any porno I've ever seen.

Suffice it to say, if the world was an X-Box, Jake would be mine.

Go see the film. It's quality, visual story-telling -- and at a level rarely attained in gay-themed cinema. At least for that the filmmakers deserve to make some coin off this effort.

Get off your butts and into the art houses, lads!

CONFIDENTIAL TO JAKE: I just Swiffered the hardwoods, so you can push me down the hall really easily.
