Harvard Students along with law professor Alan Dershowitz staged a protest yesterday urging the University to do more to overturn military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Dershowitz: "Harvard’s complicity in bigotry is one of the most important human rights issues of our generation. We simply cannot accept a standard which tells us we must compromise our morality in the interests of money. Every day of discrimination is a day of disgrace to Harvard University. We are the wealthiest university in the world. We can afford to fight bigotry in ways other universities cannot. And if we don’t take the lead, no one else will." (thanks brad)

I wouldn't piss on Alan Dershowitz if he was on fire.

I don't get it-- what does Harvard have to do with the military?
I used to work at Harvard. One day, some students marched the yard, protesting the staff's low wages (a noble cause.) They chanted "out of the classroom, into the streets!" As a staffmember, I was touched, but I couldn't help thinking: "the streets are on the other side of that ivy-covered gate, guys."

Dershowitz is often a total ass, but three cheers for his calling bullshit on Harvard.
At the public school level, it's even worse: a little known aspect of the "No Child Left Behind" game, Section 9528, is that high schools MUST give the names, home addresses and telephone numbers of all their male students who do not directly "opt out" to the Pentagon who then uses the information to repeatedly pressure the teenagers into joining the military once they're out of school. Schools that don't--just like colleges and universities who ban military recruiters--can have their federal funding taken away. Some districts have tried to fight back by creating their own "opt in" policy--which is more effective in terms of protecting privacy, because it assumes you want your privacy protected unless you tell the school district otherwise. Of course, the government is still threatening to withhold funding. "B is for Bush. D is for Dictatorship. E is for Extortion."

Why is Alan Dershowitz an ass? He is a champion of civil rights, he believes in due process and that everyone has the right to a capable defense. He is a vocal and effective spokesman for the right to privacy and civil liberties. Surely people are not still sore over Sunny Von Bulow.

Fine By Me (www.finebyme.org) is my friend Lucas' organization. It's so great to see it getting recognition. Thanks!
