road.jpg Verdicts mixed on Beckham fragrance: "It's sickly and unmanly. I don't like David Beckham - he's like a plastic toy."

Kenny_chesney_shirtless_1road.jpg Kenny Chesney's angry at the media for making assumptions about the reasons for his failed marriage to Renee Zellweger: "They've done nothing short of calling me gay and (Renee) a whore. None of those things are true. I'm pretty firm in my sexuality and my love for women."

road.jpg British cities in race to hold first gay wedding. Sharp competition to be media backdrop for ceremonies has driven Westminster and Kingston to expedite couples: "They'll all have filled in the forms in advance via the internet so all the three couples will have to do is sign their names and wait for a button to be pressed. It will only take a matter of seconds." The civil partnership law goes into effect at 8am on December 21st and gives gay couples property, inheritance, immmigration, tax, and pension rights equal to those of their heterosexual counterparts.

road.jpg NYC physician: "Based on the numbers I see in my practice, I would say 40 to 45 percent of gay men in lower Manhattan under 40 are HIV-positive." (source)

road.jpg New crackdown making gay clergy feel unwelcome. Ya think? Priest: "I'm as much a member of the church as anybody else. I love being a priest. As I have, through the years, become more comfortable with who I am, it seemed the institutional church and its decrees and its pastoral letters from the Vatican seemed more harsh and almost mean-spirited. But what I find on the grass-roots level is vibrant, alive communities of faith in my everyday ministry."

  1. What a wasted investment on Time.com's part.

I'm sure they'll be really happy with his "life couldn't be better since I contracted HIV" diatribes.

  3. Re: Andrew Sullivan. I'm so sick of the mainstream media viewing him as the Voice of Gay America, because he sure as hell doesn't represent me. I'm sure the Log Cabin types will be thrilled, though.

I can think of a different Andy who would have been a much better choice.

  4. The article about HIV is upsetting. My experience with guys younger than me (I'm 29) has been that they are very open to the idea of sex with no condoms, and no drugs were involved. It's a huge turnoff to me guys are that willing - even eager. Scary.

  5. The article about HIV is upsetting, but for a different reason. The physician who was quoted was totally irresponsible in offering that kind of information. On which study was that figure based? Or was it just conjecture based on what he sees in his office every day? If it's the latter, then of course he's going to perceive a higher prevalence of HIV. That's why we have controlled studies to try to track these things rather than subjective statements from random doctors. There may very well be a high prevalence of HIV among gay men who live and/or work in lower Manhattan, but that figure may not be kosher.

And another thing... if the risk for HIV transmission during oral sex were as high as this physician suggests, then wouldn't we have a much larger HIV positive population than we do? It strikes me that those patients who profess to being an "exclusively oral top" are probably not being entirely truthful. Think about it... how many gay men do you know who in their daily lives really are exclusively oral tops? One, maybe two? A tiny percentage, surely.

I don't want to minimize HIV and its dangers... I agree with many of the points the MD made (particularly regarding post-exposure prophylaxis), but let's not throw scary numbers around unless they're based on hard data. Soft figures like that just make it harder to get people to listen to data that's actually based on real research.

  6. I agree with Brian. ANYTHING is possible when it comes to HIV seroconversion - but so is winning the lottery twice in a row. There is a big difference between possibility and probability. It seems in my educated but unprofessional opinion that it is highly improbable that seroconversion would take place under the circumstances that the doctor describes. To echo Brian, the rate of seroconversion would be much, much higher is receiving oral sex were an effective path of transmission.

Besides - this is not exactly the New England Journal of Medicine we're reading. And the doctor's desire to remain anonymous is highly suspect.

I say trust the REAL professionals, e.g., Jeffrey Katz in SF (Q&A's at gay.com). Their opinion remains that giving head is low risk and a fortiori the getting head is about as safe as you can get beyond a firm handshake.

  7. Kenney Chesney is upset because the media is portraying him as gay?? I'd say the media is simply reporting on his behavior, and his relationship with Peyton Manning, and that's what makes him appear gay...c'mon Kenney, get out of the closet!

  8. I've said it before. I'll say it again: "Shit floats!" Proof? 1. Andrew Sullivan's career is fatter than his ass. 2. Anderson Cooper's career, despite his chicken shit closetry in 2005, rises higher and higher. 3. Reichen has his own TV show. 4. The outing of Queer Quislings AKA homosexuals who work for homophobes seems to have evaporated with little effect. Ad infinitum. Ad nauseum.

  10. "..I'm pretty firm in my sexuality and my love for women."

Just goes to show ya, "Straight Acting" and "Heterosexual" are not the same thing. Kenny may be straight, and he's definitely a talented entertainer, but "acting straight" is definitely not one of his talents.

I just hope he doesn't turn into another Tom Cruise, desperately marrying anything in a skirt, just to prove his manhood.

  11. in re: kenny chesney, wow...that's a mouthful about your ex-wife, what a nice guy. in re: the ny physician, please. crunch the numbers; physicians see returning patients as the basis of their practice. even if he saw 20 new patients a day, NEW patients, the doc would have to be yoda to have seen enough men to substantiate that claim. just more doctor drivel, blah.

  12. Ditto Trent and Glenn's comments on the mainstream media's fascination with Andrew Sullivan. It's frustrating to see him positioned as the constant "go to" for any substantive article about gay life when so many other writers, commentators and cultural observers - namely the editor of this blog - have provocative, insightful and novel things to say.

  13. I can't be bothered to dig up a link but apparently the Queen of the Blog Lagoon (tm David Ehrenstein) has declared the end of gay culture. Um, Sully Poo, you've been saying that since the early 1980's! Get some new material already.

  14. I wonder what Chesney and his pal Peyton Manning were thinking about when they co-wrote this song in 1994! Kenny is quoted to have said he knows its time to break up with a girl when you watch college football while having sex. Wonder who he was watchin?
