road.jpg Queerty's series on things in 2005 that were "so gay" starts today, with music. I can't imagine who could possibly be #1.

road.jpg Washington Post: Homophobes may be mentally ill.
"Mental health practitioners say they regularly confront extreme forms of racism, homophobia and other prejudice in the course of therapy, and that some patients are disabled by these beliefs. As doctors increasingly weigh the effects of race and culture on mental illness, some are asking whether pathological bias ought to be an official psychiatric diagnosis...."

road.jpg Virtually unknown Mapplethorpe set to titillate in Havana exhibit.

Playboxerroad.jpg Remember the Play Underwear party that happened in NYC earlier this year? I couldn't help but notice they're taking the brand to a very literal place with these iBoxers, complete with a pocket for your iPod. I suppose they're for people who spend most of their time running around in their underwear, uh, getting turned on... And, as a special hat tip to Towleroad's sponsors, these undies are available here and here.

road.jpg Six percent of Britain is gay or lesbian, according to a new government study. Stonewall exec: "For the first time the Government has robustly acknowledged the existence of a substantial number of gay people in Britain. This is welcome and long overdue."

road.jpg Monday meeting: Ford will meet today with leaders from 19 gay organizations to discuss why they pulled their ads from gay publications. An Auto Industry analyst at Street Beat Online made it known over the weekend that he's not happy with Ford: "Caving in to a grop that promotes intolerance and hate is never, in any way, understandable or defensible. What makes it an especially bitter pill is that I know a lot of people at Ford that I like personally, and for whom I have great personal respect. This is not their behavior, nor is it their mindset. Nonetheless, Ford has, as a corporate entity, behaved in a craven, cowardly fashion."

  1. "Homophobes may be mentally ill". Just a few years, the prevalent thought was that homosexuals were mentally ill. I don't think it's wise to fall into the same trap. Homophobes are just perfectly sane people with highly old-fashioned ideas about homosexuality.

  4. The owner of Play hit on my boyfriend at a bar and sent us both pairs of the underwear recently. It's comfortable, but I have to say the pocket is more nano-sized than regular iPod sized. Go figure...

  5. Eric: it actually makes sense to classify homophobia and bigotry as psychiatric illnesses.

The definition of a behavior becoming a disorder is when it affects your ability to be a productive member of society and/or maintain relationships.

Gays often become depressed over their situation, due mostly to the external pressures put on us by those who hate us so much. That's depression caused by others' actions...actions which create chaos and torment.

This is the main reason why homosexuality was retired from the list of psychiatric disorders in the 1970s.

Psychiatry isn't so much concerned with what's "normal" as it is with what's disruptive to a productive (not reproductive!) life.

  6. If homophobia is a mental illness .. would that then mean that the President of the US and his cronies, would be mentally ill?

  7. Obsession & paranoia are pathologies regardless of the fixation. What about blacks, substantial numbers of whom believe the govt tried to ethnically cleanse New Orleans, that the levees were intentionally blown up, that OJ is innocent, & that blacks are systemically disenfrachised at the voting box (absent all evidence)? What about gays who think anyone who disagrees with them on gay marriage is a 'hater' out to 'get' them? The door swings both ways. Is there enough Prozac to go around?

  8. >>Six percent of Britain is gay or lesbian

That doesn't explain the Eighty-six percent of British men who only "seem" Gay.

Maybe they all subscribe to the Clinton theory of sex, that oral sex isn't really sex, so trading BJ's in the loo doesn't make them Gay.

    God save the Queens.

  9. "Homophobes are just perfectly sane people with highly old-fashioned ideas about homosexuality."

'Old-fashioned ideas?' like in my many years in the Hitler Youth? When we'd beat queers to death after torturing them? The good old days if you are into such S & M...

Yes, happy days are here again as Dubya takes great joy in unweaving all of those laws that were designed to protect us from homophobes?

Dubya is now leading the Fourth Reich that will reign supreme for a thousand years... and as a one worlder he has the final solution to the 'gay virus'...
