  1. What a perfect photo. Two hot cowboys, smoking weed and drinking whiskey, dusk in the beautiful mountains. I wish I were there!

  2. I personally hope that best actor Oscar will go to Heath Ledger. (That's not a statement I ever imagined myself making before seeing his unforgettable performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain).

Watching him, you can discern a clear connection to many of the iconic screen performances given by John Wayne, Paul Newman and other cowboys in other classic westerns. That's an extraordinary and subversive achievement and it deserves to be acknowledged and honored.

Not to disavow Seymour Hoffman's whip smart turn as Capote, but Ledger gives a performance for the ages, in a frankly far better film.

and felicity deserves oscar for transamerica, but there won't likely be that many gay awards in one night.

  4. WHY THE HELL DID JAKE GET SNUBBED?!!!

so fucked up! and i know i am not the only one who feels that way. just go to the oscarwatch boards. dammiiitttt jake deserved a nom!

  5. I am very happy for the noms that "Brokeback" did get, but I truly think Jake Gyllenhaal got Snubbed by not getting the Best Supporting Actor nom. People are really unfairly dismissing his amazing performance.

I have seen the movie twice and his performance is extremely nuanced and aching. You feel his pain when he can't be with Ennis and you feel his contentment when he is. And I think it is bullshit when folks say he has the easier role. There is nothing easy in that performance.

If it weren't for BOTH actors the love between these two men would not be palpable on the screen. If it wasn't for BOTH of these actors this story would not work.

    Not right at all.

  8. Driving to work just now, I had my radio tuned to KCRW, the NPR station out of Santa Monica. The local news guy was reading the 7:35a local update and announced that Ang Lee had been given a Golden Globe nomination for directing "Bareback Mountain."

    Doh!

That aside...I am in Santa Barbara where the film has yet to open. I am visiting friends in L.A. this weekend (about 2 hours Southeast) and plan to see it then. Settling in on the sofa this evening to read the short story.

  9. finally!! some recognition for us.

  10. Wayne, perhaps you should watch the movie first so the full impact of the last 15 minutes hits you on the solar plexus and I am not being sarcastic here. I read Annie's short story years ago and while I still cried like a baby towards the end of the film, there's a tinge of regret there because I knew how it was going to end.

  11. Gabe:

A friend of mine said the same thing in an email this morning. I think I WILL hold off on reading the story.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

  12. Hi, I just wanted to pass this on, In the yahoo groups section "BrokeBack Mountian-Group" great forum for this movie.

  13. It's especially amazing that Jake did not get a nomination when you look at the men who DID get nominated for best supporting actor. Will Ferrel? Matt Dillon? Are they kidding? The Hollywood Foreign Press is a fairly shallow group known for nominating "stars" who play the game -- which Jake has been playing. So what gives? I for one am extremely disappointed because while Heath's performance is definitely THE performance, without Jake what would this movie be?

  14. If Jake were nominated then wouldn't he be directly competing against Heath?

    Is life fair?

If it were wouldn't Elvis still be alive and all those impersonators dead?

If it were wouldn't Dubya still be a drunk strung out on drugs?

If it were wouldn't the movie never have to have been made in the first place?

  15. I'm really disappointed because not only didn't Jake get a nomination for his outstanding performance in Brokeback Mountain, but he was also snubbed for his equally great performance in Jarhead. This is just so fucked up. He clearly has proven his acting talent in both movies. And we can see that from the best supporting actor award he received from the National Board of Review.

  16. Will Ferrel is the Worst. Actor. Ever. So extremely irritating.

  17. JAKE GOT ROBBED!

I love Heath's performance but Ennis would have been meaningless unless he had Jack's warmth and love to hold him together--without Jake's performance the movie--especially Ennis' change in character at the very end would have been hollow-- Bad move HFPA. Glad NBR gave it to Jake. WE love ya Jakie!!
