Tom Ford: No...more...colored...socks...ever!
After pressure from the American Family Association a Terre Haute, Indiana NBC affiliate and a Little Rock, Arkansas affiliate have dropped The Book of Daniel from their line-ups. A Tennessee affiliate is considering doing the same.
Brokeback Mountain leads SAG award nominations with Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams receiving nods. The film was also nominated for best performance by its entire cast.
Nominations are open for the Sixth Annual Weblog Awards or the Bloggies, as they are familiarly known. Vote for your favorite blogs. Nominations are open until January 10th.

Anybody see Gene Shalit's review of Brokeback this morning on the Today Show? Disgusting. I can't find a transcript, but he described Jack Twist (the Jake Gyllenhaal character) as a "sexual predator" who basically schemes to draw Ennis deeper into homosexuality. He also said that what happened between them that first summer was that "they had sex." Because of course it's impossible that they could have fallen in love, right? He wrapped it up by saying that the movie was getting good reviews solely because of its topic, and proudly stated that such an offense wouldn't happen on his show.
Look, you don't like the movie, fine. There are certainly criticisms one could level. But this was just a willful -- and homophobic -- misreading of the film. Shalit's an old fossil anyway, but like it or not he does still get a big audience on the Today show. He and Michael Medved need to go team up and preach to someone else.
There's a clip of his review on the MSNBC website:

Actually the AFA is pissed at the affiliate for dropping the christian-themed book of daniel. The station dropped it b/c it was too chrstian.

Ryan, wrong. The AFA pressured NBC to drop "Book of Daniel" because it doesn't portray Christ the way they want him to be portrayed, i.e., just like the hateful, spiteful bigots they are.

I'm just so happy to see Jake Gyllenhaal finally getting what he deserves, an SAG nomination for his outstanding performance in Brokeback Mountain.
He was unfairly snubbed at the Golden Globes this year, and it really pissed me off.
I really hope he'll get an Oscar nod this year too and win the awards.
Go, Jake!!!

I urge everyone to contact their NBC affiliate. I emailed my local affiliate, and asked them to ignore the wingnuts and give the show a chance. The email I received was wondeful. They said that they had been hammered with emails protesting the show, and they were delighted to receive emails supporting the show.

Due to an accident of birth, I was born in Terre Haute, IN, and attended high school and college there. I lost my virginity there and, for some time, my hopes of a life in which "Fag" was not assumed to be my first name. I escaped it and the state as quickly as I could.
While, amazingly, Eugene V. Debs survived there, and some good, dear souls still do; it remains one of the most stagnant, small-minded notches on the Bible Belt. Each time I return to visit friends there, I feel as if I have pushed "Reverse" in my time machine. I loathe each molehill and hillbilly there, and am not at all surprised that Channel 2, which is actually located a few miles south in Farmersburg [that's actually the name], led the pack of mangy, rabid dogs licking the AFA's ass.

The NBC Tennessee affiliate (WBIR Knoxville)just announced that they'd "Let the viewers decide" - meaning turn the damned t.v. off or change channels if you don't like it. A lot of people used their emails and phone calls to object to not running the show. I'd probably never have bothered to watch it until all this nonsense broke loose.

>>the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called on its members to show support for the series
Just because the show is "Gay Friendly", doesn't mean it's good telvision. From the clips I've seen, I wouldn't call it entertainment. The story line seems contrived, and politically motivated. It's like watching The Beltway Boys, with a soundtrack and costumes.
Some people like horror movies, and some people like that show where contestants are forced to eat disgusting things, so maybe some people will like this show.
I wouldn't bother to watch a bunch of neurotic Xtians argue over church policies and moral issues. It would be too much like dinner with my parents.

Jay, I agree with you, but I should be able to make that choice for myself. I don't want the AFA to make that choice for me.
LeLand, I understand. I was raised in Richmond, Indiana and grew up thinking my name was Fagboy. I got out of there as soon as I graduated high school.
