A Brokeback Round-Up

Prieto1

Here's something Towleroad reader Anna Mae brought to my attention that I found interesting in a bit part factoidy kind of way. The sultry hustler Jack Twist picks up on his dalliances south of the border was played by Brokeback's handsome cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto.

Brokeback_singaporeIn Asia, Brokeback is to open in Singapore, where gay sex is punishable by two years in prison. Said a film critic there: "I think Singapore's view is that people in the heartland don't object to showcasing films with these themes _ even if they don't necessarily accept the lifestyle. Also, 'Brokeback Mountain' by today's standards is not very controversial. The two characters suffer a lot, the film is very tragic, it wins sympathy from the audience."

Defamer reports on a Q&A at the Aero cinema with several cast members, writers and filmmakers.

OutwestMontana's OutWest Global Adventures travel vacations has renamed the Montana ranch vacation they offer at a 12,000 acre spot near Red Lodge the "Montana 'Brokeback Mountain' Ranch Vacation because of a surge in interest: "The scenery and the cattle drives will remind you of riding with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal; however, the lodge is far more comfortable than a tent and the food is much better than beans from a can."

The company's owners, Aaron Kampfe and David Heinzen, have been together for almost 20 years. Says Kampfe: "We're the real Brokeback Mountain, only nicer and less tragic."

I know some of you are tired of the Brokeback posts, but you're gonna have to stand it until the Oscars. At which point, I'll hopefully be taking a major Broke-break myself.

  1. So the food and the sleeping arrangements are better there than in the film. I guess that means spit isn't the only lube option, too?

  6. Tired of the Brokeback posts? Are you kidding? I love them and keep coming back for more. I hope you don't take that Broke-break.

  7. Did you see American Idol last night? I nearly spilled my Coke (Coca Cola, that is) when they did a Broke Note Mountain spoof. Now if that isn't mainstreaming, then I don't know what is! I wish I had been able to do a screen capture for you. But, alack, alas . . .

  8. I didn't see 'American Idol' last night. Instead I watched 'The Closer', where the gay guy was the killer. Then I watched 'Cold Case' (also on TNT), where the gay guy was the scumbag who deserved to die and was killed by the mother of another gay guy (both of whom had slept with the scumbag gay guy).
Good to see TNT picking up on the gay trend.
(In fairness, I'd never watched either show before, and was seriously doped up on cold medicine...so possibly this was just a coincidence. Maybe somebody who isn't gay and a killer or prime suspect is a regular.)
Now, I know gay guys can be killers..I live in Palm Springs where back-stabbing is a parlour game....but these episodes were right out of Sinatra's 'The Detective' in 1968.

  9. I watched the Olympics where the gay guy(s)were skating and jumping til their hearts content or not content as in some cases. There was some sweet booty going on too. I really don't dig figure skating with the girls only the boys and what about those speed skaters. But I digress.

  10. ...what about those speed skaters, indeed. digress away, donald.

presenting the gay-guy-watching-the-winter-olympics version of chinatown:

"ohno, oh yes, ohno, oh yes, ohno, oh yes"

and don't even get me started on the ice skater boys.

  14. I am not tired of your Brokeback posts, either. I am glad for them. I basically wore out all my friends with my Brokeback obsession, and I'm glad there's still a little corner where I can get my "fix". :D

  15. Jay Leno said it best:

"Shuan White hoped that his gold medal made him sexy...he has a Sasha Cohen-crush...and eight male skaters rang-him-up." ....Or something to that effect.

  16. In Gaysia, Singapore really still remains a shame amid its economic prowess.

  17. Shuan White...is that the guy with the 70's 'do? Maybe he should do an appearance of "That 70's Show". :)

  18. On Rodrigo Prieto playing the hustler, the Jan 2006 issue of American Cinematographer has a quote from Prieto on the issue: "I was starting to light the scene, and Ang said he wanted to ask a big favour," ... (Lee, who explains that the actor originally cast turned out to be too short, notes "Rodrigo will do anything for a director, including putting himself in a dark alley!") ... "They whisked me off to hair and makeup and wardrobe, and God, it was horrible. The worst part was, it was a complicated setup. The cameras starts with Jack going down one street that was lit with tungsten units gelled with 1/4 CTO, and then turns onto a street where all the prostitutes are. I wanted to transition into something seedier there, so I went to mercury vapor; the light changes from a warmish hue to blue-green with some yellow and red spots coming out of a door-ways. The camera was seeing in 360 degrees, so I had to contain all the sources within the buildings or overhead and had very little time to do it - and on top of that, I had to endure makeup and hair!"

  19. So if I go to this place and stay.. do I get tp put my cock in Jake Gyllenhaal's warm ass? Is that included too? I think that would make up for the tent and bad food... just my opinion

  20. Rodrigo Prieto was director of photography in Oliver Stone's 'Alexander'.

  22. Additional info about about shooting the Mexican prostitute scene from an attendee at the BBM screening and Q&A on 2/13 in Santa Monica attended by Jake, Heath, Michelle, Rodrigo, Gustavo Santolalalla and some others:

And apparently Rodrigo was the Mexican prositute and he said he'd work really hard to make sure the lighting was correct and try to get into character. And as soon as Jake came up to him, he said he'd look at Jake and Jake would start to bust up. Jake said he had a steady cam follow him, but he couldn't stop laughing during every take. He said the original take was a lot longer than the take in the movie, but by take 7 he finally stopped laughing and thats the take they used.
