Dolly Parton Gets Ready

Here’s hoping Dolly Parton wins the Oscar for her song “Travelin’ Thru” from Transamerica. Here she is yesterday, either rehearsing for the Oscars or doing a promo spot for Hot Pockets.

Dolly said she finished “Travelin’ Thru” in one day after a bout of inspiration on her tour bus, and based it partly on one of her colleagues: “I have a person who works in my organization who once was a woman and now is a man. I didn’t know for years that this person had had a sex change. I know what a wonderful person he is, and I based some of my feelings [in the song] on my feelings for him and on knowing what he went through.”

She also recently told USA Today:

“Some things are strange to me, and some things are odd. But I don’t condemn. If you can accept me, I can accept you. Having a big gay following, I get hate mail and threats. Some people are blind or ignorant, and you can’t be that prejudiced and hateful and go through this world and still be happy. One thing about this movie is that I think art can change minds. It’s all right to be who you are.”

Can a gay man have a crush on a woman? I’ve always loved her music, and I certainly WOULD vote for Dolly! She’s just to damn smart to get involved in politics.

“Transamerica” was one of the cultural events at the last White Party in Miami. The director explained in the Q&A afterwards that Dolly’s song was added last when someone insisted the film needed a special song [the rest of the soundtrack is pretty good by itself] and put him in touch with Dolly who—of course—he said was fabulous. Having seen the film one can easily spot the trans-specific references, but, seriously, I think it could just as well be about someone going through the coming out process as a gay man or woman, and would have even fit really well in “Brokeback.” If you haven’t seen the “Transamerica,” you can listen to the whole song by following the directions below. And below that are the moving lyrics [Mother of Pearl! There are actually more than two verses!]. But they’re all the more touching with Dolly’s inimitable voice.

Wait for the image to load, after which you’ll see some play controls at the bottom. Click the double arrows on the right immediately under “In store February 7″ until it says “Dolly Parton – Travelin’ Thru.” [It’s the last one, as it was only heard over the closing credits]. It will automatically start.

Well, I can’t tell you where I’m goin
I’m not sure of where I’ve been
But I know I must keep travelin’
‘Til my road comes to an end
I’m out here on my journey trying to make the most of it
I’m a puzzle I must figure out where all my pieces fit

Like the poor wayfarin stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim tryin to find what feels like home
What that is no one can tell me
Am I doomed to ever roam?
I’m just travelin’ travelin’ travelin’ I’m just travelin’on

    Questions I have many
    Answers but a few
    We’re here to learn
The spirit burns to know the greater truth
    We’ve all been crucified and
They nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I’m born again you’re gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
    Redemption comes in many shapes
    With many kinds of pain
Oh, Sweet Jesus, if you’re listening keep me ever close to you
As I’m stumblin, tumblin, wanderin, as I’m travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’ travelin’ travelin’ I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’ travelin’ travelin’ I’m just travelin’ thru

Oh, sometimes the road is rugged and it’s hard to travel on
But holdin to each other we don’t have to walk alone
When everything is broken we can mend it if we try
We can make a world of difference
If we want to we can flyyyyyyyyyy

    Goodbye little children
    Goodnight you handsome men
    Farewell to all you ladies
And to all who knew me when
And I hope I see you down the road
You meant more than I knew
As I’s travelin’ travelin’ travelin travelin travelin’ thru
    I’m just travelin’ travelin’ travelin’

Drifting like a floating bowl and roaming like the wind
Oh, give me some direction, Lord
    Let me lean on you
As I’m travelin’ travelin’’ travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’ travelin’ travelin’ I’m just travelin’ thru
I’m just travelin’ travelin’ travelin’ I’m just travelin’ thru

Like the poor wayfarin stranger that they speak about in song
I’m just a weary pilgrim tryin to find my own way home
Oh, Sweet Jesus, if you’re out there keep me ever close to you
    As I’m travelin’ travelin’ travelin’
    As I’m travelin’ thru
    Travelin’ thru
    I’m just travelin’ thru…..

The song kicks ass! My [str8t] friend and I saw Transamerica the other night. While I [marginally ] liked it more than he did, the one thing we agreed on: THE SONG KICKED ASS!

    I hope she wins too!!!!
