Towleroad Guide to the Tube #1
A gorgeous Brokeback Mountain tribute to James Blunt's "Good-bye My Lover". A posse of Skating Cowboys. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in The Fast and the Curious. And, trying to ignore the studio watermark on this creation, Larry Miller's Brokeback Mountain.

Skating cowboys.... That is the gayest thing I have ever seen. Brilliant! I would actually go to this show just to have those butts shaken in my face.

I think this is the same guy who made the fake "Shining" trailer! Holy shit imagine being some Christian zealot going to the film with that trailer!
Does anyone know the song used in the beginning of the "Fast and the Curious" clip? Sounds familiar to me.

The James Blunt/Brokeback vid was excellent. Thanks Andy.

'Gorgeous'?? I'd say ridiculous, bordering on insulting. That Brokeback 'tribute' is nothing more than some boy-crazy fairy's massacre of Ang Lee's work to suit a song they happen to like. Don't get me wrong - I loved Brokeback Mountain, cried, remained deeply affected by it for days. But I prefer to remember how I was moved by the film than to revisit it via this pap slapped together like some 12 year-old girl's bedroom wall of Teen-Beat posters. If you wish to honour Brokeback so much, perhaps be a little more discerning in how you do it.

Kurt, bitter much?
Posted by: Tread | Mar 21, 2006 8:52:11 PM
Tread - not at all. My comment has nothing about being bitter. I'm very up front about my appreciation of Brokeback.
I'm simply saying that a work as important as Brokeback Mountain shouldn't be reduced to a third-rate music video. To do so is misguided and immature.
For Andy to post it as anything more than that, I feel, not only does a disservice to the film, but also to the genuine devotion he's shown towards it to date.
My opinion is up for debate but don't throw barbs without any teeth to them.

...and before I get slammed for a typo - 'My comment has nothing to do with being bitter'
must re-read before posting.

I think your reading a little bit too much into it Kurt. Its a video created by a fan, using music that the fan found particularly fitting to the context of the film. Its no different than making a fan site or buying the limited-edition-ultra-foiled case widescreen version of a film. Its being a fan. Considering how much of the lyrics and images came together soo seemlessly I would say it was well edited. You may feel it is unnecessary but no need to insult someone who has clearly put alot of thought and effort into their work, even if it is based on someone elses. Your comments were what was immature.

Nice to see a well worded response, Toto.
I am in complete agreement with you in that it is merely a fan's response to the film, one involving time and effort, and no doubt with the best of intensions. What I don't agree with is that it hold's much more artistic merit than a cheap bristol board and glitter glue 'I love you _insert american idol contestant_' placard waved on TV. This person had all the right to create the video, but I'm calling Andy on his decision to give it more far more exposure than I think it deserves, especially considering how has handled Brokeback commentary so far.
I personally consider that being a fan involves a certain amount of respect for the work, and to chop Brokeback up and serve it on a facile pop-ballad platter is to cheapen the film's importance.
I don't need James Blunt and some basement editing to impart more meaning into the film - it carries quite enough on its own.

Kurt, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Just because you don't find the song appropriate doesn't mean others don't. Perhaps you should be a little more tolerant of how people express their "fandom". It's quite obvious the person who made the video put a lot of care into it and didn't throw it together haphazardly.
I thought the video was very appealing and the scenes that were chosen fit the song very well. Your rant comes across as very bitter and negative about something that is supposed to have a positive connotation.

Ok - let's wrap this up.
I agree it's just a piece of fan work - nothing more.
I'm entitled to think it's awful, others to find it moving.
Because I find it awful, I question its place on Towleroad.
At the basis of my argument, there's nothing really bitter, though, agreed it did come out as a rant.
Let me give you an example completely removed from the video in question of why this kind of thing sticks in my craw:
I've got a very talented friend who takes stunning nature photographs. Really powerful and pure work. She's also very literate and a hopeless romantic. Often she'll create montages or prints of her work and overlay quotes from poetry or other text that means something to her. It drives me crazy because in doing so she's downgrading her work to the same status as a wood-burl clock with a sunset photo and a bible quote. Her art doesn't need to be propped up by another person's text to make it good, and in fact, is much more powerful on its own. For me, the excercise is futile from the get-go.
The song chosen for the video is irrelevant to my argument - you could do the same thing to 'MacArthur Park' if you tried (please don't) - the point is that the motive behind creating this video is about as elevated as scrapbooking.
My apologies to scrapbookers everywhere.
Peace.

Kurt, it's Andy's blog. He obviously liked it or he wouldn't have posted it. If you don't like it, start your own blog.
Enough said.
