DNA Preview: Brandon Mackay by Lewis Payton
Towleroad is happy to present an exclusive preview of the upcoming issue of DNA magazine featuring modeling newcomer Brandon Mackay. You may recognize Brandon's sinewy athletic body from the most recent cover of Out magazine, but DNA's got him totally covered here.
We last featured Lewis' shots from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and he's been quite busy. His site has been updated with over 30 new shots and fans of his work will be excited to hear that he's working on a special box set of images which he should be releasing in July. We'll have more on that soon, but for now enjoy these clean, sexy, classic images of Brandon.
There's much more where this came from in the upcoming issue of DNA. Thanks to Lewis for the great shots.

Nice body, but I think there is a subtle hint of gayface, which I know some people love, while others...hold out on.. I love my queens, just don't find them sexually attractive. ;-)

gayface... that is wrong for so many reasons. However, accurate and funny.

Will Payton one of these days surprise us all with something other than a beautiful white boy?
Posted by: Chad | Apr 25, 2006 12:02:05 PM
Why should he?
Posted by: Donald | Apr 25, 2006 12:07:19 PM
I just hope the box set of images he's working on is not over priced to the extreme like the current prints for sale on his site. It's sick how much they cost for such small sizes.

Oh. my. lord.
I prefer him to some of the others I've seen... his chest isn't puffed up to a ridiculous size. Very nice.

YAWN...so tired of those shameless plugs for DNA and that Lewis Payton dude..Is it just me or do all his models pose like Paris Hilton? I think Rosie O'Donnell is more masculine than these hairless fruits.

Well, I love DNA, Mr. Payton, his models, and the rather predictable poses in his photos. I also love Mr. Towle's shameless plugs. He knows a good thing when he sees it.

Honey if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Those pics are hot. Lewis Payton could take an old dried up piece of dog crap from the yard and through the magic of filters and lighting make it look like the spitting image of Christopher Meloni (with his shirt off, of course... now THAT'S one big hangin' man). He's clearly talented in this niche area, and I for one am delighted to see his work when it pops up on Towleroad.
I'm also happy to see this guy's muscled but not-too-pumped-up bod.

To me he looks like a beefier version of hayden christensen which is alllllllll goooood in my book.

I think it's sort of shameful that this vapid "news" has as many comments as it does while other obviously more pressing concerns within the gay community seem to go mostly unnoticed. What the hell is wrong with us?
Posted by: Jason | Apr 25, 2006 3:58:04 PM
Jason: This is difficult for me to put into the written word, but just imagine me, an athletic, six-foot, darkly tanned, bald man with a goatee who's never been too good at being queer. Now imagine me snapping my fingers and saying in my deep bass voice "Get a life. You're queer."
Mr. Towle's blog is not a news website. It's his musings and a compendium of things he finds interesting. I love the fact that he finds Mr. Payton's art interesting.

I couldn't agree more. It's like he's channeling Paris. I could totally pop a boner for Rosie compared to that guy. hehe

I love cute gay boys with a bit of swish in 'em. Bring it on!

As an avid collector of photography and a proud owner of three Lewis Payton prints, his work is neither overpriced nor undersized. I'd say it's actually somewhat under current market value for similar work. Photography, like all art, is also an investment and Payton is considered one of the finest male nude photographers in the world. It's art, you either like his work or you don't. I, like many people, like Payton's photography a LOT.
Andy's shots are from a magazine, they aren't Payton's fine art prints. But, if you want to purchase affordable Payton work, buy a DNA - it's under $10!! :)

This guy looks gay? Look what he's wearing people!! skimpy speedos. His body is lean and toned, not muscle bound like many DNA models. Yeah, so he looks like a fashion model! Big deal! That doesn't make the guy gay. Either way, he's hot and the pics are beautiful.

James writes "Payton is considered one of the finest male nude photographers in the world"
Wow, talk about one of the biggest over-statements of the decade. Payton's work is nice and pretty for what it is (magazine beefcake), but let's get real hear, there is mediocre talent displayed in much of his work. You get a gorgeous model in from of anyone who knows a camera and you can get decent photos. Let's not confuse the beauty of the subject with the talent of the photographer. His poses are standard and show little creativity. If the model was replaces with an average Joe Schmo in these same poses and scenery and all you have is a snapshot, no? The top photo can't even be considered a decent crop. From what I read on this blog before, Andy gets exclusive use of some of Payton's work so these images are most likely not directly copied from a magazine but the files were given to him to use here and I can only assume aren't edited.
Now, before people start accusing me of bashing Mr. Payton, that is not my intent at all. As I said, his images are nice for what they are, but please let's not put him in the catagory as "one of the finest Male Nude Photographers in the world". That is really insulting to the actual best and photography itself.

wow Kyle did Lewis Payton steal your lunch money at school or something? your comments sound very personal and this smacks of a grudge. If not bashing Payton was your intent, I'd say you failed.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I see of Payton on towleroad are beautiful fashion portraits, I'd say more portrait than fashion editorial, but still gorgeous all the same.
what I see on lewis' website is something more. there is not a dud image on the site and the consistency of quality is amazing. creamy, flawless gorgeous shots that I find captivating. The stillness and simplicty is so well executed. Payton doesn't physically contort or torture his models like so much fashion work, and has little to no narrative in his work, yet he captures moments that are real and show depth beyond their deceptively simple surface.
I have seen plenty of Payton's models shot by other fashion photograhers and I have to disagree that it is easy to make a beautiful model look good. Anyone can shoot a beautiful person, but few shoot them beautifully and Payton inarguably achieves this.
I once read a book review where the reviewer said he looks forward to the authors new work like some people look forward to Springtime. Well, I consider myself an avid lover of art and especially photography and I very much look forward to Lewis Payton's new work.

For everyone who thinks these shots are pedestrian, I have one thing to say...copy them! Come on, pick up a camera and show us how easy it is to make images this good!! Coz I sure aint seeing much I like out there, but I can't get enough of Lewis Payton's clean, gorgeous images.

A friend of mine went to the recent signing event in LA to get me a copy of Lewis Payton's "10" portfolio. I'm a huge fan of his work, but I must say that I was very disappointed with the prints. First, the portfolio is not a "boxed set" as some have stated. It comes in a heavy clear vinyl envelope. (Note: Payton has NEVER advertised it as a "boxed set" -- I think people just assumed that it was.) Though the images are printed with archival inks on acid-free paper, they are very dull in appearance. The combination of the pigmented inks on uncoated matte paper doesn't provide the contrast and rich blacks you would get from photographs, lithography, or giclée prints (the method he uses for his large prints). If he had used a coated archival paper he would had achieved much richer blacks and a wider range of tones.
Payton has stated in interviews that he wanted to give fans that couldn't afford his larger prints an opportunity to own some quality pieces of his artwork. In all honestly, this portfolio really doesn't accomplish that. Instead, stick with his work in magazines, save up for his large prints, or wait for his promised book.

Thom made a very balanced personal opinion above, but I disagree with his review of 10. I bought my copy of 10 online a few weeks ago and I love the softer tone of the prints. I am sure that Lewis' art prints are much more impressive and deeper in color, but they're also $500 for one print! I think it's such a great little collectors piece and at $39, what do you expect? It's ten prints for the price of a few cockails. A great opportunity for those of us that can't afford higher priced art to get a piece of Lewis Payton's gorgeous work.

Christ that Lewis Payton guy needs to get over himself. First he's telling us some model is the face of the Iraq war and now he's single-handedly reviving Bali's tourism industry with his mediocre photos.
Get over yourself girlfriend.
