Sydney Convicts Charge to Bingham Cup Win

Sydneyconvict

Outsports has a report on the Bingham Cup, the gay rugby tournament named for United 93 passenger Mark Bingham. Mark Bingham's mother Alice Hoagland was on hand for the tournament. Twenty-nine teams from all over the world participated in the tourney, with the Sydney Convicts taking home the cup.

Check out photos of the thigh-tastic event on Outsports and Slowernet's flickr page.

  1. You`ve gotta love rugby.
You`ve gotta love gay rugby more.
What a fitting tribute to Mark Bingham too.

  3. Right!
So I went to this over the wknd. I actually schlepped via Mass transit a la website's instructions onto randall's island and saw a number of matches. I had a wonderful time, considering I was tanning with a couple Brooklyn Lagers, but all I heard from the players were complaints. They complained about the commute (the Gotham Knights accepted almost $100,000 in sponsorship/entrance fees and did NOT provide transportation to/from airports/hotel/fields) and the fact that the "pitches" were un-playable: strewn with broken glass and other debris.
One player from the San Francisco team lost an eye and one from Ireland broke his collar-bone.
And while these unfortunate incidents were highly entertaining, they were unnecessary. The Gotham Knights let the Bingham Cup down, and gave gay NYC a bad rep as a sorts venue. BOO to the Gotham Knights!

  4. No transportation? London didn't provide transportation to their fields either and made people pay through the nose to get their field. With over 800 people present, the minimum number of buses to rent would be 15 and those buses aren't cheap. Figure a MINIMUM $500 per day = over $20K just on buses not including any tips and that's just minimum. So you would rather have had Gotham go bankrupt and risk existing as a group? Doesn't make sense? These guys provided lunch to all of the teams at the field each day, had a medical staff, massage staff, chiropractor, and more on site. And for the record, the player from Ireland did not break his collarbone and the player from SF scratched his cornea and didn't "lose an eye." Stop being so dramatic and get your facts straight. I know Gotham is on top of their shit and when the finances come out (and trust me knowing these guys they will) teams will see what money was spent on and know that they did the absolute best with the resources available. AS for the parks, why not raise your complaints with the parks department. They're the ones who are supposed to maintain the fields and what your tax dollars go for.
