Best gay blog. Towleroad Wins Award

road.jpg This is ridiculous. A high school teacher shows a 2 1/2 minute clip of Brokeback Mountain to students and an "investigative inquiry" is launched. The clip showed nothing sexual. This isn't the first time the school has been embroiled in gay issues: "Students in Boyd County have been divided in recent years over gay issues since a group of students petitioned to form a gay awareness club at the high school in 2002. A lawsuit ensued and the school district later settled. The agreement called for anti-harassment training for all staff and students." Guess the anti-harassment doesn't extend to teachers attempting to teach tolerance.

Krystianroad.jpg Meet Krystian Legierski, one of the leaders in Poland's fight for gay equality. Rod 2.0: "It's amazing that Krystian is fighting for gay equality in a country where so many of his compatriots even refuse to recognize him as a fellow Polish citizen. Just to imagine what his daily life must be like ... wow, it almost makes our life over here seem like a cakewalk."

road.jpg Moscow authorities officially refused to sanction a gay pride parade scheduled to take place there on May 27th, as expected. Organizers still plan to hold the parade. Expect violence and protests, say Moscow government leaders.

road.jpg The Senate Judiciary committee okayed the Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage yesterday, after Russ Feingold walked out. This was expected. The amendment is widely expected not to pass the full Senate and is seen as a purely political ploy attempted to appeal to the Republican base in a mid-term election year.

  1. Gay marriage? Da Vinci Code? Sex Toys? Anything they can bicker about besides the crap hole they've made out of the USA and our international status is up for discussion. It's total bullshit.

Gay marriage hasn't killed anyone yet in Boston. Well except maybe victims of the homophobes who are urged to violence because they are only half-brained and mentally disturbed.

  2. Poland really needs to get kicked out of the EU--the country is an embarrassment. Makes me want to change my last name.

  3. The AP story about the Brokeback Mountain affair has some interesting wording: "The brief showing of the film, which centers on the sexual relationship between two male sheepherders, upset at least one parent who had a student in the class. Nothing with sexual content was shown."

"Which centers on the sexual relationship"? Gee, and I thought it was a love story.

  4. Tom, don't you realize that love can only happen between one man and one woman? The Gays are only about the sex...that, and destroying the sanctity of marriage for all breeders.

  5. Even though Howard Goldberg, Associated Press New York City Bureau Chief, is not just out, but a member of the Board of Directors of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, the AP, whose items are picked up verbatim by countless print and TV/radio outlets, remains virtually troglodytic in its approach to LGBT stories. Hence the inflammatory and inaccurate description of Brokeback and the superficial description of the history of homophobia in Boyd County. The chain of events that followed the application for a GSA is representative of the tactics of the American Taliban nationwide, from school administrators fucking with their own rules, to local ministers inspiring several hundred students to walk out of school to protest the GSA's existence, to national fascist legal group the Alliance Defense Fund suing on behalf of students who refused to attend the mandatory antiharrassment training that resulted from the original settlement, fought for by the ACLU. Courageous GSA sponsor Kaye King, an English teacher, and the handful of courageous students in the small town who stuck their necks out to start the club deserve much admiration. The ADF is financed by some 30 right wing religious groups, including Focus on the Family and D. James Kennedy, the Florida Ayatollah whose megachurch was the site of the protest involving Chip Arndt recently featured on Towleroad. They were involved in the Boy Scouts' Supreme Court victory banning gay Scouts. In February, a Kentucky district judge ruled against them and their clients saying all students must attend the training regardless of their devout belief that Jesus wants them to kill queers. OK, those weren't his exact words, but....

  6. This whole controversy over Brandon Davis is a bit ridiculous when it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that Paris Hilton was just as involved, laughing like a hyena and holding up her cell phone while Davis trash-talked Lohan. Where's all the outrage over that skank's involvement?

  7. Hmmm knowing that one the leaders of Polands gay rights movement is black somehow makes the world seem like a smaller, better place but jeez talk about a tough road to hoe?! Rock on Krystian!

  8. In regards to the Brokeback story, I would have to ask the parents if they would have demanded they be notified for permission if the film had been Romeo and Juliet.

  10. This string is as good an excuse as any I suppose to bring up the latest campaign from the people at the Brokeback forum started by Dave Cullen: donating copies of the DVD of Brokeback to public libraries, particularly those in small towns and rural areas. The list of libraries already gifted, from Alabama to Wyoming, is huge and brings a tear to my jaded eyes. They'll do it for you [if you send them the $$], but also have suggestions for how to do it directly yourself, including lists of libraries nationwide for those who do not live in/come from small towns where it would follow one would donate him/herself. Before hearing about this campaign, I had donated five copies to the LGBT student center of the midwestern university where I was head of their gay group moons ago. Now I'm thinking of public libraries there, too. My only quibble with the forum idea is that they suggest using Amazon because they have registered with it as an affiliate and thus get a kick back to support the forum, etc., but Barnes & Noble has the same kind of program, and while their DVDs are a little more expensive, unlike Amazon, according to BuyBlue.com, Barne's & Noble contributes only to "progressive" political candidates. 12. The story about Brokeback in the school really pisses me off. These parents obviously don't want to teach their kids acceptance and now they won't even learn it in the schools because the parents are finding ways to get it restricted. This was a senior class so it was most likely made up of 17/18 yr olds. These kids should be old enough to be able to watch this movie. If parents want to restrict the teaching of everything they don't agree with then they might as well eliminate subjects such as history seeing as their kids will be learning about all kinds of controversial happenings.

Wayne, let's be fair. His awfulness, the pope did concede that it's a "weak" love. However, it's nothing compared to the love between a priest and an eleven year old.
