News: Giuliani Murder, Diana Death, Little Britain

road.jpg Detectives have arrested a homeless drug addict in the slaying of gay former aide to Rudy Giuliani, Martin Barreto. Barreto's body was discovered on August 21st in his apartment, and an autopsy later determined "asphyxia due to compression of the neck" to be the cause of death.

Proulxroad.jpg Brokeback Mountain author Annie Proulx selling her Wyoming cowboy outpost: "The 3,500-square foot 'Aspen Country Retreat' sits on a 2-acre lot and has three bedrooms and three baths..."

road.jpg Filmmaker plans controversial film on last hour of Princess Diana: "In London, we will have to work secretly because Diana is sacrosanct - and everybody goes jittery the minute you just mention her name. It can probably never be exactly clarified what happened in that hour of her death. Art has the freedom to interpret this".

road.jpg John Blankenstein, Dutch official who was first openly gay referee in football, dies of kidney disease at 57.

Daffroad.jpg Little Britain to get American remake: "Matt Lucas and David Walliams are to adapt their outrageous comic creations for American viewers under a deal with the cable channel behind the award-winning The Sopranos and Sex and the City. The search is on to find the urban American equivalent of the schoolgirl nightmare Vicky Pollard and a suitable deep South locale for the only gay in the village. The duo will work with American writers and Simon Fuller, the British entrepreneur behind Pop Idol, will oversee the show."

road.jpg Philip Slater on homophobes: "Men and women who are comfortably heterosexual aren't obsessed with stamping out homosexuality. Normal, non-neurotic people don't care what other people do in the privacy of their own homes. Normal heterosexual men don't spend their Saturday nights hanging around gay bars to beat up gays--they're out with women."

Little Britain is very funny...let's see how the Americans do in converting the humor...

Let's see how the Americans do in fucking it up, is more like it... One word : Couplings.

I only started to believe in God when I heard the deal that had Roseanne buying the rights to remake Ab Fab over here fell through.

Though many of the gags were recycled, I just loved the "Roseanne" episode where she and Jackie became friends with Pats & Eddie.

Michael, THAT WAS HILARIOUS! I love Little Britain, why must someone fuck it up? Yeahbutnobutyeahbutnobut.....

The headline "Giuliani Murder" gave me a moment of shock!

Can't we just import Little Britain to PBS like Monty Python??

Posted by: Anon | Aug 30, 2006 8:17:29 PM

Little britain is already ruined if they're setting 'the only gay in the village' in the Deep South. How fuckin' cliche can you get? It misses the whole point. Want it to be funny? set it in Chelsea..........

Who could possibly care that somebody is making another Diana movie? Are you getting your blog info from Mary Hart now?

Posted by: Buster | Aug 30, 2006 11:19:00 PM

I just mentioned to my colleauges in the office that they were going to make a US version of Little Britain, collective response: GROAN and yells of Look what they did to The Office! ;-)

Posted by: Zakalwe | Aug 31, 2006 2:59:58 AM

Oh no!! Why do they always have to remake shows into American versions? Are Americans really so stupid or culturally inept that they need to have the humour spelt out? I doubt it. I'm Australian and I enjoy (and, I think, understand) American and British humour just as well as Aussie humour. Let's start a "Keep Little British" campaign! By the way, do any of you American guys enjoy Kath and Kim? It was a huge hit over here and is very funny.

Posted by: Charlie | Aug 31, 2006 5:41:49 AM

Zakalwe, just what did WE do to the Office? It's hysterically funny, Ricky Gervais is the creator, producer and writer for the American version, and it just won the Emmy for best comedy on television. So tell me again, just what went wrong there? Since Ricky is so heavily involved you'd better watch your words, or make a quick retreat.

Don't forget that if it weren't for the American's you'd be speaking German right now!

The Germans were going to invade Australia? Wow. I never knew! The things you learn on Towleroad.

I like the show, but is American TV that hard off that we're STILL importing?

Posted by: Bobby Alexander | Aug 31, 2006 10:25:02 AM

What are they going to call it? Little America?

God, they're so going to screw it up.

Little Britian in America has about as much chance of success as AbFab had.

Yours Truly,
FCC

(and Michael: brilliant answer)

We LOVE Kath & Kim here in the UK.

"I want to be effluent mum, effluent!"

"You are effluent Kim."

If it's not been shown in the US, it's a must purchase DVD.

Remember it's the Brits who went ga-ga over the mediocre "Friends." It's way more popular over there.

Posted by: jmg | Aug 31, 2006 5:16:06 PM

American mainstream audiences will not get the humor of Little Britian, just like they failed at remaking Coupling which was a great series on BBC but the American version lasted 2 episodes before NBC pulled it.
