Spain's Summer Tomato Warriors
Spaniards love group activities and gay marriage so it seems entirely reasonable that the "warriors" attending the annual La Tomatina would have no problem getting nearly naked and wrestling around in the end-of-summer pulpfest with forty-thousand of their closest friends.
"'Throwing tomatoes is 'wonderful for getting rid of stress,' said Pilar Garrigues, culture councillor in the eastern town of Bunol, where the festival known as La Tomatina started spontaneously six decades ago. Five lorries dumped more than 110 tons of mushy tomatoes in the town centre. By the time the one-hour battle was over, the streets were filled with tomato-covered participants ankle-deep in tomatoes between splattered houses. Partipants rushed to use the 500 showers prepared for the purpose.."

The "Tomatina" only happens in a village of the South-East of Spain.

Artist Jeanne Dunning, inspired by the Spanish tomato fights, has staged one as an art work in San Francisco (as part of her residency at Capp St/CCA).
Dunning lives in Chicago, and her next tomato event will take place on September 23 at University of Chicago's Gallery 400. This is of course not on the same scale as the Spaniards' event, and the audience cannot participate, but we can watch.
Dunning also photographs the event and the aftermath of the fight. The fighters look like survivors of a massacre. Scary and funny at the same time. see you there!
