A small aircraft registered to New York Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle crashed into The Belaire high-rise condominium at 524 East 72nd Street late this afternoon. A flight instructor was also reportedly on board. Two people are confirmed dead. The plane took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. Lidle's passport was found in the street, according to CNN.
The images seen on the news after the crash of a hole in the burning high-rise was, on a much smaller scale, eerily reminiscent of images seen on 9/11. Soon after the crash, NORAD scrambled fighter jets over U.S. cities as a precautionary measure, though no link to terrorism is suspected.
