UN Ambassador for AIDS Rupert Everett joined MTV India’s condom-shaped AIDS ambassador “Rubber Sing” in Delhi on World AIDS Day to launch a campaign to fight the disease in that country.
Said Everett: “I have been associated with AIDS awareness programmes for the last 10 years, and I’ve been to India many times too. I’ve lost many dear friends to AIDS. Awareness is the need of the hour. Education about this dreaded disease alone could go long way in saving innumerable lives…Everyone has sex, but no one talks about it. That’s the main reason why we’re unable to fight AIDS till date. People must open up, and share their experiences. There’s no better education or awareness than that. And now it’s high time we confronted this disease. India has reasons to worry. But the best part is that the Indian economy is strong. That means if we put our hearts to it, we can raise the funds to do a lot more that what we are currently doing for the HIV positive Indian population. We might not be able to help the present generation, but we could at least help the coming generations.”
