News: Clive Owen, Ex-Gays, iPhone, Mr. Blackwell
Ex-gay billboard prompting protest in Phoenix.

Clive Owen is to be the new face of Lancome: "It's a somewhat surprising move for Clive, who is known for his somewhat craggy, unshaven good looks and whose previous endorsement deals include a series of cool short film ads for BMW. But the handsome actor admits he's not averse to a little cosmetic help when it comes to looking after his appearance. 'I use much more now, I'll tell you that much.'"
A few hands-on reports of the Apple iPhone are starting to appear. Gizmodo: "Well CD players and iPods both play music. But elegant design at the fundamental level of how it plays tunes is what helped it transcend the category. From what I saw, first hand, I think the iPhone is going to do this for cellies. I have a bit of sympathy for our friends at RIM and Nokia." NYT: "The Web browsing experience is incredible. You see the entire Web page on the iPhone’s screen. You double-tap any spot to zoom in. Or you use the two-fingered spread-apart gesture to “stretch” the image larger, or pinch your thumb and forefinger on the glass to zoom out again. The manipulation is seamless, smoothly animated—and useful."

Whitney Houston to unload prized mannequins at auction.
Skating on thin ice? AfterElton expands on the Mark Lund trashing of Johnny Weir we showed you yesterday: "It’s one thing to see homophobia from the straight community (especially in sports), but seeing something so close to antigay bigotry coming from an openly gay man like Lund is especially egregious. Frankly, the whole thing felt like an orchestrated attack on Weir who apparently is far more popular than the official figure skating world cares for."
Mr. Blackwell releases annual "Worst-Dressed List".

Former staff of XY magazine launches Qr, a new publication for young gay men. Publisher: "We started Qr after being frustrated by 'the norm'. How the media represents us, how our generation feels left out, how we're not quite 'Generation X,' and we’re so different from the pioneering gays that came before us. Young gays aren't defined by their sexuality, and Qr is a magazine that doesn't tell them who to be, what to buy or what to wear. Instead, Qr is a soapbox to shout from and a community to share."

If Clive says I should rub some creamy goo all over my face, consider it done.
I'm ready for my Julia Roberts moment.
Yes, sir, Mister Owen, sir.

Although the idea of Qr initially seemed appealing to me I scrolled down to the bottom of the page and read, "Qr Magazine—your guide to being young, gay and cool!" Not only is this a corny line but it also goes against everything they state on the page about not telling the reader what they should be.
I hardly ever read gay magazines unless they happen to feature some type of political matter. I find that everything else they cover doesnt stray too far from the same scenerios as any mainstream non-niche magazines like rolling stone. You can't ask for any one magazine to represent an entire culture especially a group as diverse as homosexuals.

Enough of this QR nonsense - let's discuss just how impossibly sexy Clive Owen is!

Hiya, Eric here from Qr.
Thanks for the post and for all of the great discussion!
We are very appreciative of the gays that came before us, and Qr will contain relevant political and social commentary -- our focus however is on helping 18-28yo gay men make sense of what it means to be young and gay. Which, as some of you pointed out, is quite different than mine (yes, I'm soon 30) and older generations. Although Qr looks to the future, of course we don't ignore where we as a community are coming from.
The staff of Qr hope to take the good qualities from our time at XY and create something new and better, but leave the things that people don't like about XY in the past. We will publish monthly. We will feature diverse content and break down twink stereotypes. If you flip through our sample issue at http://qrmag.com you'll hopefully see that we're nowhere near as whitewashed as many mainstream fag rags.
Anyway, thanks for the discussion, debate and feedback -- it's appreciated!
Keep it Qr :)

If it's true that this generation doesn't define themselves by their sexuality, than these kids are going to be in for such a rude awakening 20 years from now when they are sitting in their coffeeshops with their partner and STILL have no legal rights. The U.S. is so backwards and to think that sexuality is no longer a defining aspect of one's self is nothing short of delusional.
And if young gay men aren't defined by their sexuality, than why launch a magazine that targets them as a group? This is something that Bruno should examine on Ali G., it's so ridiculous.

That's awesome Eric! I've added you guys on myspace lol :)..and I'm definitively going to check out your magazine when it's out, even though I'm not sure I'll be able to afford a full subscription.
And how about this for an idea: maybe you can open a section of your magazine for "old" generations to contribute some pieces, since they have other ideas on how the younger generations should approach queer rights and expression.
