I don't watch the Real World, but after that clip it made me smile. Good for him (the straight room mate) for trying to get to know Davis and his boyfriend. It makes me happy. I realize that people will have their views, but that gave me goosebumps when he made the connection and understood. The first step to combating anything such as homophobia is EDUCATION and PERSONAL EXPOSURE. (I think I'm getting teary eyed lol)

Saw the episode and it was uplifting to watch how the conservative Republican Stephen's opinions have changed. It sucks that Davis's mother won't allow Davis to come home, and that his younger brother wrote to him to say he was a disappointment to him because he was gay.

I don't watch the Real World. This is a good clip and very nice to see but I still can't stand Davis. I'm still upset he broke up Lance Bass and Reichen.
Al Franken should not be running. It would be like Bill O'Reilly running. I am thankful he won't get the nod. I am happy that Rudy is running. He did a great job fixing up New York and leading during 911 and he is for civil unions. It's nice to see someone moderate running for office. You know a good canidate when their own personal values say pro-life but they respect a woman's right to choose and support that as a candidate.

Who's the reporter, interviewing Rodrigo Santoro? He made all kinds of bad feelings, come to the surface for me....violent ones.

Speaking of youtube news, has anyone seen the clip of Joel Surnow's "The Half Hour News Hour" which will air on Fox News Channel? It is Fox News' response to "The Daily Show" and their attempt at comedy. It's so bad, I actually felt sorry for them. Check it out:

The Real World clip is a perfect example of how gays and lesbians most effectively change hearts and minds in the REAL WORLD.
Is it Pride parades that make people rethink their negative beliefs about gay people? Nope.
Circuit parties? Uh uh.
Internet rants? Hardly.
Gay positive politicians? Help, but only marginally.
What about sending money to HRC, GLAAD or any number of other gay advocacy groups? Afraid not.
The number one way gay people will change hearts and minds, and gain social/political/familial/religious acceptance, is to simply come out to their family, friends, neighbors and co-workers and live their lives RESPECTABLY and unapologetically. When a person, regardless of their religion, background or political leanings, finds out that a person that they love and respect is gay, it makes it much harder for them to blindly accept the negative stereotypes that they've been taught and have come to accept as true. It also makes them more likely to challenge the homophobia of others.
I've said it a thousand times:
Bigotry (racism, homophobia, misogyny etc.) is LEARNED. Knowing this, it’s imperative that we understand the technique of those who purvey bigotry. It's much easier to teach someone to hate and fear a person if you can keep them from actually getting to know him.
That's why the closet is to the homophobe what segregation was to the racist. The racists didn't want racial integration because they knew that it would make their work, teaching people to hate and fear blacks, much more difficult if people actually got to meet and interact with black people and realize that they too had families that they loved; they too felt love, hate, pleasure and pain; and they too worried about paying the rent/mortgage and wanted a community where their families were safe from crime. The more people interacted the more they realized that their similarities far outweighed their differences. Therefore integration was a MAJOR threat to racism and was fought tooth and nail by racist.
The same can be said of the closet. Coming out is certainly a personal journey and should be a personal choice, but the ramifications are much more widespread than the individual’s existence and the benefits are FAR greater than the individual's experience. Coming out, in my opinion, is a universal act and every individual coming out story accelerates the gay rights movement exponentially. Unfortunately, conversely, in my opinion, those who live in the closet are active participants (whether intentional or not) in the oppression of gay people and the stifling of the gay rights movement.

On a lighter, and briefer, note; who is this Santoro gentleman? I must confess that I've never heard of him but, WOW, what a nice, kind, humble and hot man he is.

Kudos, Zeke. I could not agree with you more on your comment about changing the hearts and minds of those in our communities and municipalities.

Note that the big football player from Nebraska Tyrie (who, in my dreams, bangs me six ways to Sunday) had no problem with Davis being gay from the start and repeated it a number of times in last night's episode. I like the guys in this cast.

Great kiss! Shower scene was steamy too! Must be odd having a camera follow you around.

I love how Kirsten Powers on Fox News was the "Democratic Stategist." Isn't that cute? Was there really any difference between what she was saying and Michelle Malkin? Speaking of Michelle Malkin, who is she to criticize ANYONE on appropriate blogging behaivor? Even forgiving her extreme views, comments and blogs (which I won't), she also put up personal contact information on random protesters from California *even after* they were getting death threats directly from people who were on her website. She belongs in jail, not national television.

Great "Real World" episode last night! And since that was the token "gay episode" this season...I won't have to watch this crap anymore...yay!!! Seriously though...did anyone see Davis on the MTV .comaftershow? He got a question aking if he could choose to be gay, would he. He burst out in tears and was all like "absolutley not...it's fucked everything up...my relationship with my mom"...blah bla, say i to Reichen for me, sweetie

Too bad Davis doesn't realize that his homosexuality didn't “f up everything”, including his relationship with his mom. Ignorance, prejudice and bigotry is what has f'd up everything INCLUDING his relationship with his mom.
If we continue to blame our natural homosexual orientation for the homophobic abuse we endure instead of placing the blame squarely at the feet of homophobes and our homophobic society, we will continue to perpetuate the myth that we are responsible for, and deserve the hate and abuse that we receive.
It's one of the most empowering things a gay person can do when he sheds the guilt and stops accepting responsibility for the abuse he receives.
Hopefully with time and experience Davis will grow to understand this. To bad he didn’t understand it before he went on national television saying that he wished he weren’t gay because IT had ruined everything.

Agreed Zeke. Also, we've seen in the uk as more public figures - pop stars, actors, politicians etc - have come out, the ripple effect that that undoubtedly has had on the man or woman in the street; the more people come out, the more are then inclined to come out and pretty soon its really not a big deal anymore. The objectification stops once people know someone who is gay; co-worker, friend of a friend, their doctor.. It is small scale stuff that makes the difference because it works at the level of the individual; before you know it, real change has occurred.

I can't imagine how Davis' statement, that he wishes he weren't gay, made his boyfriend feel.
If my husband were to say such a thing I would be crushed because without him being gay we wouldn't be "We" and frankly that's more important to me than my mother's acceptance. So much so that we were estranged for almost ten years until she dealt with HER issues. I refused to live a lie for her comfort.
Then a few years ago, and even more so within the last year, she became, and continues to become the coolest chick on the planet!
That's no small feat for a seventy-three year old fundamentalist, Southern Baptist, conservative Republican but it would NEVER have happened had I capitulated to her ignorance and bigotry.

P.J.? I hope he's not still with Davis. Not after Davis went and layed up with Reichen! I don't know if Davis hooked up with Reichen before or after he and P.J.(theoretically--which I prolly spelled wrong)broke up.All I know is that P.J. SEEMS like a nice guy...and needs to leave that racist, hot mess.
Posted by: FanGirlHater | Feb 15, 2007 8:15:38 PM
^^ I love how you still managed to allude to Davis being hot even though he's a mess.
I haven't cared about the Real World in years and I don't know the kid but he is definitely hot. I'd tap it.
