England Banning Homophobic Chants at Football Games

ColenotesFor the first time, Football Association officals have put in place regulations that will treat homophobic behavior at football games with the same zero-tolerance policy that restricts racist epithets.

In response to a season where footballer Ashley Cole was taunted by fans who printed up hundreds of banknotes bearing his image as the Queen, as well as past incidents that targeted both fans of certain clubs and players Sol Campbell and Graeme Le Saux, the Football Association says this makes the rules clear.

A FA spokesman told the British tabloid The Sun: "This is the first time we are specifically and pro-actively addressing the issue of homophobic behaviour. These new regulations have been designed to allow clubs to fully address this issue."

  1. Just my opinion: all that's a good thing, but the real danger to homosexuals in England and Europe comes from the growing Muslim population. In some mosques, right in the UK, it is openly preached that homosexuals should be killed, and a poll shows 60 percent of the UK muslim population saying they'd rather see Muslim law reign there. Unless their growing numbers are stopped, what do homosexuals in Europe have to look forward to? I hate to think of it. (Before any non-thinkers jump on my statement, screaming "you're prejudiced!" and other worn-out cliches, do some research on this issue).

  2. I'm not sure I agree with that. Sure there is such things as pockets of populations with retrograde views on homosexuality, women's rights, and so on....but the homophobia that worries me the most is the one that is institunionalized through the law, the educational system, the corporative, professional sports, the entertainment business, and the market in general etc..that one is huge.

I mean I KNOW a mosque preaching hatred against gays is also a danger, but 1)they don't hold the same power as the institutions 2)if with clear and proper laws in place advocating zero tolerance against hate they can be easily combatted..at least I think so.

  4. A little perspective; Muslims constitute around 3% of the population in the UK; about 1.5 million people with most living in the London area. The radical imams and mosques are well known to the authorities; one of the most notorious imams has been chucked out of the country for using language consistent with inciting hate.

The poll that you refer to is rather deceptive; forty per cent of Muslims between the ages of 16 and 24 said they would prefer to live under sharia law and there are signs of radicalism amoung some young muslims. However, its important to see this in context. We are a secular society and conservative with a very small "c"; there is increasing intolerance towards radicalism in the UK in all its forms and the issue is much very alive over here. We are growing more vigilant with regard to attacks on our way of life. Trust me, a handful of radicals - who are not representative of the moderate Muslim majority - are not going overturn uk anti-discrimination legislation or dictate terms. The evidence is that things are getting better for all people to the right of the kinsey scale...the introduction of civil unions being just one example. Dare I say it, but I think you have more to fear from red state america.

  5. I see no real evidence that Muslims (at least in the UK) are any more homophobic than any other group. What is a real problem is that some politicans are willing to ignore that hate that spews out of some imams mouths to avoid seeming anti Muslim.

On the chants, the real question that should be put to the FA is why did they EVER allow homophobic chants?

  6. I still believe in my original statement, by I appreciate the other commentary and perspectives from you guys, which I'll take into account too. (Just stay ever watchful over there).

  7. Not to change the subject, but why is Jobs doing this? He's making such a killing off of his own software by requiring people to use iPods. And to sound Lieberman-esque but I am against music piracy, so I would have to side with the Warner chief.

But I'm sure if they were professing hate or insurection against the government there would be no such fear..Part of the problem, I think, is that the law is still ambivalent when it comes to hainous discourse against gays, and it's willing to protect it under religious freedom.

And to go back to the original post by Joe T. we should note that some of the people we're supposed not to be worried about very often will join forces with muslims when it comes to rallying against gays (christians, some scientists, lots of non believers). There were recent postings about it in regards to Scotish gays, so it's clear they too will have little incentives denouncing the muslims's discourse..Read on the following article:

    Fundamental union

"When it comes to defining family values, conservative Christians and Muslims are united against liberal secularists, writes Brian Whitaker
    Tuesday January 25, 2005

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi is a controversial Islamic scholar who approves of wife-beating and believes in traditional family values. The Mormon church, having abandoned polygamy more than a century ago, believes in traditional families too.

With that much in common, they have joined forces to "defend the family" and fight progressive social policies at the United Nations.

Other members of the holy alliance include Cardinal Alfonso Trujillo, who campaigns against condoms on behalf of the Catholic church, and Mahathir Mohamad, the dictatorial former prime minister of Malaysia who sacked and jailed his deputy for alleged homosexuality."
