Funeral Set for Slain Gay Detroit Senior Andrew Anthos
Funeral arrangements have been set for Andrew Anthos, the 72-year-old gay senior citizen who was beaten to death in a homophobic hate crime last week in Detroit.
A public viewing and visitation will be held from 2-9pm tomorrow - Tuesday, February 27 and a service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday at the Ford Funeral Home, 26560 Van Dyke, Center Line, Michigan 48015; (586) 754-2464.
The other tragedy? A senior citizen who campaigned for 20 years is beaten to death with a pipe in an anti-gay attack and not one item from CNN, or the other major outlets. Pathetic.
ADDENDUM: A tipster writes in, "The family has requested that donations be made in the family’s name to go toward Mr. Anthos’ dome fund and to assist them in their campaign to fight hate crimes. Funds in the Anthos family name can be mailed directly to the funeral home, however, I have no idea what or how funds will be used specifically or what anti-hate crime campaign the family plans to commence."

Thank you, again, Andy for keeping us informed about this story, and totally agree it's outrageous it's apparently not getting any mainstream coverage. I attended a small dinner/Oscar watch party last night and none of the gay men there knew anything about this it, even though most were, to varying degrees, "politically aware." I guess there aren't as many Net gay-related news junkies as I thought.

Not unusual that none of the news outlets have said anything, they are all too obsessed with Anna Nicole and her baby daddy garbage. But, even on this site, it has got and probably won't get too much attention, older gays and lesbians seem to be invisible to younger ones.
May he rest in peace and the thugs who did this to him get a life time sentence.

Thanks for posting this Andy - I was asking in the other thread how we can go about contacting the family to set up a fund to Light the Dome as others had brilliantly suggested. What I said:
"I think it would be a fitting tribute to Andrew's lifelong dream which he never had the chance to see through -- And symbolically, it would serve as a reminder for the whole city on the dangers of hate crime, and I'm sure Andrew would want his death be turned into a positive for the youth."
I'm going to send in my contribution and encourage the family to use it towards Andrew's dream, though I'm very excited about their idea to fight hate crimes as well.
As for the lack of coverage by the media - it's a pity there are no journalists like Dan Noyes to take this on like the Yale Choir's scandal, but I think this isn't the last we've heard of this story..If enough money is contributed to the fund interest will grow and sooner and later we'll start hearing the positives of it all.
So I hope more blogs pick up on the fund and publicize it (and let everyone send in a donation if they can!!)
