Laura Bush: Iraq stable "except for the one bombing a day that discourages everybody."
Status reports from our fronts:
Dick Cheney in Afghanistan: "A suicide bomber blew himself up this morning outside the main gate of the United States military base at Bagram while Vice President Dick Cheney was inside. Mr. Cheney was not hurt in the attack. The blast killed and wounded American soldiers and Afghan and Pakistani truck drivers and laborers waiting for access at the gate. The incident was at the first security gate of the base, far from where Mr. Cheney was staying. The Associated Press reported that the Taliban claimed responsibility and said Mr. Cheney was the target of the attack."
Laura Bush to Larry King on Iraq: "I hope that they can build their government and reconcile with each other and build a country. This is their opportunity to seize the moment, to build a really good and stable country. And many parts of Iraq are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody." (transcript)

Andy,
Laura Bush does not set foreign policy. Who cares what she has to say about Iraq? And before anyone here accuses me of being a fan of the GOP, I'm not. But come on. What she has to say means nothing.

Laura Bush's comment
OY VEY
Stepford Wives is not just a fictional story.
That one bombing yesterday....killed what 60-80 people and was in baghdada the caitol. If you can not secure the capitol of a country then you have already lost.
On Cheney....if this isn't a bit of propaganda to make us sympathize for and with him more.....is it wrong of me to wish the guys should have aimed better...

PS
James anyone who has the ear of the president during coitus is important. It is a scientificaly proven fact that during the sex act and most especialy during the moment of orgasm one is very very very susceptable to suggestion. The woman has the ear of the dim-wit during his orgasms...then yeah she has a huge influence on policy

James, you shouldn't be so naive. Of course Laura Bush is part of the policy making junta governing our country right now. Even if she wasn't, she is one of the important spin doctors who continues to feed the media misinformation. In this instance, she downplays the daily death and destruction in Iraq by attacking the media. What a c--t.

Laura Bush's comment on Iraq...
"And many parts of Iraq are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody."
...is on par with Barbara Bush's Hurricane Katrina comment...
"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."
She obviously takes after her mother-in-law. I can't wait till her comment hits The Daily Show.

Let the queen do as she pleases.
I am the state.

Why are they hungry?
There is no meat.
Let them eat bread.
There is no bread.
Then let them eat cake.

Bill,
Please tell me you are being ironic.

Then Laura followed on with "You know what they say? A bombing a day keeps Democracy away".
I never liked her. Ever. She reminds me too much of the alien in drag from "Mars Attacks".

David
Your post reminded me....about 1 week to 2 weeks ago bush jr when asked about Iraq in a press conference actualy said, "I don't know everything that is going on, I live in this nice white house......" basicaly his own queen antoinet moment.
You know, people say Gore has changed since the election. That he seems more comfortable etc. When in all actuality it us the american people who have become more comfortable with a well informed and articulate man....a nerd, thanks to what we have had to suffer with via bush.

actually what we see on television that's discouraging is that evil tupperware bushbot spewing her brainwash.
blowing off one of her legs might balance her concept of stability and bring the horror closer to home.

Why Larry King even asks her about political/military policy is beyond me. Then again, since CNN became ANN (Anna Nicole Network), anything goes. Laura has inarticulate stock answers for everything, making it appear that the librarian may know the dewey decimal system, but not much about books.

She is dumb.
She gets a pass from the press and public because she's a librarian and being married to George makes her look smart.

She doesn't "get a pass" because "she's a librarian." I'd be willing to bet that most people don't even know that she's a librarian. She gets a pass because she's the First Lady. She certainly wouldn't be the first "dumb" First Lady to occupy the White House, and she won't be the last.

In the course of my life thus far, I have learned one constant truth: people are dumb.
It really saddens me to know there are people in this world that support this war, that don’t believe in climate change, and would rather allow their anger and rhetoric to cloud their judgment in a time when the world can not afford another George W. Bush. What ever happened to calmly and intelligently discussing an important topic in which lives and the planet are at stake? Bipartisan politics is KILLING the American way of life (whatever that is now), making enemies of what should be allies and instilling fear and anger in what should be hope and progress. Hate and ignorance are our enemies, not each other.
Sometimes I wonder if George Lucas was wrong with premises in his movie "THX 1138", in which all forms of "feeling" are illegal (a premise later revisited in the 2002 release "Equilibrium"). Humanity has proven over the course of time that emotions cause more harm than good.

When was she a librarian? Honestly. When? 30 years ago for a week or something? They bought their "ranch" one year before the election. Why do we go along with the farce? Why does George Jr. speak with a Texas accent and Jeb has no accent? They both lived their entire lives at boarding school on the East coast or at their real family home in Maine. Demand the media stop perpetuating the bullshit and do their freakin' homework!

Laura Bush is no dummy. She knows exactly what she is saying. She and Condi Rice are the only two people in the Bush White House with positive poll numbers, although Condi's are going down steadily, they still remain above 50%. People listen to Laura, and take what she has to say to heart.
She knows full well that there are dozens of bombings in various parts of Iraq every single day. Perhaps we only get to hear about one or two, but the numbers are horrifying. Perhaps if that one, somewhat discouraging bomb were to go off in the White House residence, she wouldn't think it was essentially so inconsequential. These Bush women appear to be incredibly insensitive. Barbara Bush made cruelly insensitive remarks after Katrina. Laura continues to minimize the suffering and brutality the Iraqi people contend with constantly on a daily basis. The two Bush twins have their heads so far up their asses that they wouldn't know from suffering except from the vantage point of a book they might accidentally read.
It seems Americans like their first ladies to be quiescent and uninvolved. Whenever they had a thinking first lady they complained loudly. For cryin' out loud, this woman hasn't even bothered to bring any form of artistic culture into the White House. Where are the performances that used to be broadcast from the White House? Where are the cultural endeavours supported by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy or Lady Bird Johnson. Or the social issues so courageously dealt with by Betty Ford. Laura Bush is a Stepford first wife, and the country seems to love her for it.
