News: Wimbledon, Dave Koz, Squid, Boulder Hate Crime

road.jpg Possible hate crime in Boulder, Colorado. A woman is assaulted after she tells two men she is gay and not interested in their sexual advances. The woman had offered the men a place to stay for the night. According to 9News in Boulder, "The victim is a student at Naropa University, a fine arts school that advocates peace and kindness."

King_riggsroad.jpg It's about time: Wimbledon to award women the same prize money as men.

road.jpg University of Georgia hockey goalie Joey Fisher comes out of the closet: "His decision was not without trepidation. He had heard homophobic comments in the locker room as his teammates flaunted their machismo. But Fisher clung to a story he had heard years before of former high school football captain Corey Johnson. 'I kept coming up with excuses to not come out. In reality, people are just going to be a lot better about it than anyone really expects,' Fisher said. He decided that he would post on his Facebook profile that he was gay. He figured that a couple people might see it and that it would help him ease out of the closet. In that assumption, he underestimated the power of the Internet."

road.jpg Bobby Trendy weighs in on the debate over who is the father of Anna Nicole's baby: "Hopefully, it's Larry Birkhead's, he looks better than Howard Stern. I think Larry is more attractive. Anna always wanted a blonde hair, blue eyed baby."

Squidroad.jpg Fishermen haul in world's largest squid: "Experts are yet to examine the whopper, but if original estimates are correct it is about 10 metres long and is 150kg heavier than the next biggest specimen ever found. The creature is a colossal squid (scientific name Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) - a very large species that's shorter but much heavier than the better known giant squid. The squid was caught after it was hauled to the surface munching on one of its favourite foods - a Patagonian toothfish the fishermen had hooked on a longline."

road.jpg AfterElton hits up jazz musician Dave Koz for a chat about his new CD At the Movies. Koz uses snippets of dialogue from the film on the CD: "I always thought that this album should start by placing the listener in a movie theater. So the idea was: Let's start with 'Over the Rainbow'; let's use a little snippet of Judy Garland from The Wizard of Oz. Then it will start with that very old-sounding, crackly, mono sound to this beautiful open image with the orchestra coming in.Well, that was an idea; little did I know that we could actually make it a reality, and it was much to my surprise that we were able to get the rights for a fraction of what I thought it was going to cost to use that."

  1. Bobby Trendy sounds retarded.

  2. If the giant squid had been served that Patagonian toothfish in a nice restaurant, it would have been called Chilean sea bass.

  3. I believe in equality and fairness but this is BS. I'm sorry, but the men should make more money because they work harder and play tougher matches. They have to win best of five sets in all their matches, while the women only have to win best of three sets in their matches. I agree with the guy quoted at the end of the article when he said this isn't an equal rights issue, it's an issue of the men playing longer and harder matches than the women. Why should the women get equal pay under those circumstances? If they want equal pay, they should have to play best of five set matches too, plain and simple. Plus, like he pointed out, the women already tend to make more money than the men because they play more doubles in addition to singles (plus, something the article didn't mention, is that female tennis players in recent years have made more money from advertising and product endorsements than male players have).

  4. I think Bobby Trendy may very well be retarded. But at least we know he's not the father of the Anna Nicole baby.

  5. That worst nightmare article... It hurt, it was painful to read, and I'm very glad I did.

It just makes me realize how much worse things could have been.

Kudos to that hockey player, :) Excellent of him to come out like that, such personal strength.

  6. Equal pay for equal work, right? So make 'em play best of five. It's that simple.

    Posted by: Scott | Feb 22, 2007 2:41:05 PM

  7. Brian and Scott are right. I think men and women should be paid by an equal RATE. Like when two people buy meat. Let's say one person buys 3 lbs and another person buys 5 lbs of meat. The price of meat is fixed at $1 per pound. So person one pays $3 and person two pays $5.

  11. Speaking of Judy Garland, there is an exciting and popular new group on Yahoo called THE JUDY GARLAND EXPERIENCE. They have ever changing and always ultra rare audio files, great photo's, lively discussions, and the most eclectic bunch of Judy fans you will ever come across. The only thing missing is you.
    You should check it out.

  12. it's an issue of the men playing longer and harder matches than the women.

Then we should dock the men when they get trounced in straight sets, a la Roddick, who barely broke a sweat in his loss to Federer at the Australan. I believe most of Serena's matches were longer, and she worked much harder. So she should be paid more than Andy - her matches were very popular, and she probably brought in as much if not more money than Andy.

I mean, she worked harder, right?

    Posted by: Anon1 | Feb 22, 2007 4:18:04 PM

  13. BTW, Federer won the tournament without losing a set. Since he didn't have to work that hard, he should get less than Serena, whose matches went the distance until the final. I'm sure she worked harder for her title than Roger did for his title.

It's that simple, right? Oh, and Brian, what about when a women's event brings in more money than a men's event?

It's about profitability, not work. Sports is entertainment, and most women would be happy to play five sets, if they thought it would add to the entertainment value of the sport. The fact is, many believe that the men shouldn't play best of five, especially at the French with two baseliners....very boring.

To boil it down to only being a function of how many sets you play is overly simplistic, so no, it's not that "plain and simple."

  14. Men's tennis gets more revenue from advertising money than women's tennis, so the men can negotiate higher payouts (or used to be able to). This isn't like being a bus driver (as worthy a profession as that may be), each appearance fee is negotiated separately (paid just to go play, not win) and the prizes are awarded to only the winners. There is no pay-rate per se. That being said, each individual tournament can have whatever payout they like. And, some gender bias was always in play in Tennis because of the assumed inferiority of women's play. In reality, an equal (but probably unfair) tournament would have men and women playing together, but no one mentioned that in the article.

    Posted by: anon | Feb 22, 2007 4:26:32 PM

  15. Well, about this "presumed inferiority," not everyone agrees. I've been a tennis fan for 30 years, and I just happen to enjoy the women's game more, because it is a different game. You actually get to see a different, and in many ways, a more entertaining set of skills. Even John McEnroe has changed his mind. He believes in the entertainment value of womens' tennis, aside from what the men offer.

And the fact that the men's game gets higher revenue dollars is also misleading. Sharapova commands some the highest fees of all, more than many of the men. So we should dock her at the majors, because the men's game commands a higher advertising dollar in general? Doesn't seem fair to me.

Both the women and men should be valued for their work, entertainment and professionalism. When they play together, some womens' matches will be longer and more entertaining than the mens' and some mens' matches (even if most) will be more entertaning and longer. You should treat them equally. Both sides are adding to your event and to the bottom line, and it's hard to quantify revenue, work, entertainment value, etc...

But to say that men work harder and play longer? That's just too simple.

    Posted by: Anon1 | Feb 22, 2007 4:46:41 PM

  16. Brian, the women have asked to make their sets best of five, but they have been turned down. The poweres that be have decided that they aren't physically prepared to play a best of five.

In my opinion two out of three is harder than a best of five. The women can't afford to be lax in the first set, or have time to warm up. They have to be on their game from the start.

Also, the equal pay makes sense because the men's division has been dead for years. Most people have been coming out to see the women, not the men.

  17. Way to go Joey. Best of luck on everything.

Just to add to what I already said about pro tennis pay, I think more should be considered than the length of the match.

  18. Andy if anyone bitches again about you posting Jakey or any thing else you chose to, remember the post you just did on Joey Fisher. I take my hat off to you sir, I also sent the kid an emai telling him how proud I was of him and wishing him and his circle, gay and straight, many blessing. He will be a great role model.

Belated congrats by the way Andy, on the 5,000 thing.

  19. Bobby Trendy is usually an idiot but this

I have to agree with, if given the option of having Larry's genetics over Howard's with that huge nose.

I know i'd rather have Larry as a daddy lol

  20. Does anyone else see the irony of having a news blurb about Bobby Trendy located right above a picture of a giant squid?

  21. "Anna always wanted a blonde hair, blue eyed baby." Is Bobby inferring that Anna was a Natzi?
