Ricky Martin Gives Bush the Finger

Ricky1 Ricky2

Although Ricky Martin got chummy with George W. Bush at the President's inauguration, Martin has apparently changed his tune on dear leader, becoming the latest entertainer to express his displeasure at the administration's policies. Martin just launched the Black and White tour in his home country:

"During his performance in Puerto Rico, Ricky Martin stuck his middle finger out when he mentioned President Bush’s name. In the song "Asignatura Pendiente", there is a line in the lyrics that goes: A photo with Bush… As he said this, Ricky gave him the F-you treatment and the crowd of 18,000 fans went crazy and cheered."

Hey, it worked out ok for the Dixie Chicks.

  2. I loves me some Ricky Martin, but he looks like Nan Kempner in those horrible necklaces.

  3. And what's up with his new sex club tattoos? I wonder what all that scribling means?

  4. He's as hot and juicy as ever, even if he does look a little like John Cougar Mellencamp in these photos.

  7. Wow he gave the finger to George Bush in Puerto Rico?! He is so courageous!

I hope the Country Music radio stations don't stop playing his music.

Anyway, what lucky lady is he dating these days? From what I hear - he's a real stud with the women.

  8. Of course, the Dixie Chicks did it years ago, when it wasn't so popular.

  9. Home COUNTRY -- Puerto Rico?

    Posted by: KJ | Feb 14, 2007 6:25:13 PM

  10. Anthropologically, Puerto Rico IS a country. La Ricky is about as openly gay as you can be without actually proclaiming it in public. He's been slowly acquiring a conscience, which is probably a good thing. I still don't like his music.

  11. Ricky Martin is a friggin' hypocrit. He is now trying to distance himself from the idiot Bush. But the damage was done when he sang at the moron's inauguration.

And Ricky is one celebrity who would actually have his career rejuvinated if he did finally come out of the closet.

    Posted by: WHATEVER | Feb 14, 2007 6:37:38 PM

  12. I'd drag Ricky from the closet given the chance. What I'd drag him by, I haven't decided.

    Posted by: Marco | Feb 14, 2007 6:43:09 PM

  13. Let me get this, ahem, straight. When George assumes the mantle of power, Ricky pitches in to help him celebrate...and woo the latin voters in this country. But now that George is unpopular and his power is on the wane, Ricky gives him the finger. Talk about a fair-weather friend! I'm not sure I want him to be part of the gay community.

  14. WHATEVER, I agree but we also need to allow people to change. Martin is trying to do that. The problem with some of these latino stars is that they're often beholden to the right wing Emilio Estefan mafia in Miami.

    Posted by: Gabriel | Feb 14, 2007 6:55:16 PM

  15. PETERPARKER, He didn't campaign for Bush, which is when any "wooing" might've had an effect in the election. I really don't want to defend Ricky Martin but I also don't want to deny him the opportunity to change. Isn't that what we need to do to win elections?

    Posted by: Gabriel | Feb 14, 2007 7:12:53 PM

  16. Gabriel...if you think a politician can't continue to 'woo' a bloc of voters through associations with popular entertainters even after an election, then you are naive.

  17. When I think about flip flops that bother me, Mitt Romney's change of heart regarding abortion and gay rights is far more unsettling than Ricky Menudo.

Besides, Ricky is so much hotter than Mitt, so that works in his favor too.

  18. Looks like Mr. Martin has made one heck of a transformation.

  19. All this fuss over Ricky Martin? Can anybody name one song of his after "She bangs"?

    Posted by: FanGirlHater | Feb 14, 2007 10:58:01 PM

  20. Peter, all I'm saying is that he deserves the benefit of the doubt because he now obviously dislikes Bush and he didn't before. That's why the center-left won in 2006. Instead of vilifying him we should encourage him. Like I said from the beginning, I am NOT a Ricky Martin fan but I'm pleased that his ideology is evolving.

  21. I swear I think he is getting nastier with those tatoos

    Posted by: Travis | Feb 14, 2007 11:41:11 PM

  22. And by the way, his career could be negatively affected by this. But like the Dixie Chicks are independent of the Nashville Mafia, Martin also doesn't need the Miami Mafia anymore. They might try to ban him from radio stations like they do with any Puerto Rican artist who dares set foot in Cuba, but hopefully they won't succeed.

    Posted by: Gabriel | Feb 14, 2007 11:48:01 PM

  23. I hope you are right, Travis. I sure hope you're right.

  24. > Anthropologically, Puerto Rico IS a country.

Yeah, like Europe or Texas is a country. I'm sure if Bush had made this gaffe, you'd be all over him. Yet another reason not to take our host Andy seriously on matters political.

For those who don't know, English is an official language of Puerto Rico. For over FIFTY years, PR has been a commonwealth of the US, and Puerto Ricans have consistently voted to maintain that status. They use American dollars. No passport is required for travel to/from the 50 states. They are US citizens. I learned all of this in eight grade.

  25. Why would you appear with Bush and then give him the finger? I can't stand Bush myself but you can't have both.
