Death in Central Park

Frozen_pigeon

It was close to 60° in New York this weekend. Nice enough to take a walk in Central Park. The skies were blue, the ponds were thawing, and the pigeons were out in force. Well, most of the pigeons.

This one particular specimen discovered just how cruel a winter in Manhattan can be, and apparently didn't heed the "Thin Ice" warning near the pond.

  2. This is disgusting, Andy. Did you run out of celebrity stories or something?

  4. Hmmm, our standards of cruel weather are very different. It is currently 15 in Minneapolis with a 10 mph NW wind, and I will be leaving shortly to commence my 1.5 mile walk home from work.
Your 60 degrees can kiss my ass :)

  7. Thank you, Mr. Towle, for maintaining such a unique and all-encompassing blog.

Although I very much appreciate all of the gay-oriented news articles you cover, it's the geeky space stuff, the randomness, and overall unpredictability that keeps me coming back.

And sure, the dead pigeon is a little gross, but death can be like that. It can also be beautiful in its own freaky way. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Racist hate filled bigot of a pigeon I bet...

  12. Haha... I have to concur with Kitchenbeard. My dream is that I will wake up one day and they will all simply be gone.

But I think I could tolerate their continued existence if the alternative is to be confronted with their death in this kind of unnecessarily graphic and morbid way.

I miss the good ol' days when the death of one's enemies was represented by a pair of fabulous red slippers.

  15. I live in downtown Los Angeles and I guess we have as many pigeons as any other metropolitan area. While waiting for the bus the other day, an SUV hurled its way through a group of pigeons and one was crushed before I knew what was happening. Sure, it was gross. Sure, it was cruel. But, face it folks, for all of us life can be both gross and cruel. In that one instant I was reminded about the fragility of life and how each moment should be treasured. Forgive my being maudlin but even the passing of a pigeon (be it in NYC or LA) can have relevance to someone.

  17. a moment of absinthe and pale male....nothing i find very revelatory in poetics, yet, i'm still trying to find the asana association to this infestation. however, they seem far more active than some moments i've observed in keyboard experience. after all, i saw loads on the corner of market near sanchez. very bizarre.

  18. Guys, it's not dead it's just the yearly pigeon polar bear dip where hardy pigeons get together, chip a hole in the ice in central park and dive in. It's a charity event to raise money for some pigeon charity!!! don't you guys know anything?

  20. I think there are more important issues that should be dealt with than to focus on the death of a living creature that really serves no purpose in this arena.

  21. So, is this where I saw you running off to on Saturday with your camera around your neck?
