Towleroad Guide to the Tube: #96
BOB HATTOY: Hattoy's speech at the 1992 Democratic Convention in NYC. Hattoy, who died earlier this week, was the first gay man (and person with HIV) to address a national audience in prime time. (source: hrc)
GARUDA FLIGHT 200: Footage shot by an Australian cameraman who happened to be aboard the Indonesia airliner which crashed Wednesday in Yogyakarta. A tragic loss of at least 21 souls but an amazing survival story of the remainder of the 140 on board. Warning: some footage may be graphic.
FAMILY GUY: 1993 Giuliani campaign ad. (source: gawker)
MELINDA DOOLITTLE: Simon's "little tiger" and last night's standout on American Idol.

Melinda has been my favourite since the start; a sweet, gentle, modest, self-effacing soul with genuine talent.

Melinda and Lakeesha Jones are already stars in my eyes.
I agreed with Randy last night... Melinda is ready to hit the studio and pump out an album. She has it all, personality, voice, performance. The girl knows how to sell it.
And I love her humility. I feel like I'm watching the next Goddesses of Soul being born.

As I mentioned to my friends this morn, watching Melinda Doolittle each week on American Idol is like watching that scene in Whats Love Got to Do With It where Anna Mae Bullock becomes Tina when Ike Turner first hands her the mic!!

Not exactly sure what the Idol and plane crash footage have to do with this particular website. (I am not denying that woman's talent nor the tragedy of the plane crash.)
I know this is a free site but, as far as I was aware, it is supposed to be about gay stuff, no?

if john m doesn't realize what's gay about melinda doolittle singing "i'm a woman!" than i don't know if towleroad can teach him anything!

Did the press clip not mention that the airplane was a practicing homosexual?

IN RESPONSE TO HATTOY'S SPEECH:
I don't understand why everyone is so supportive of Bill Clinton... did everyone forget that Bill was the one who signed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996? You remember.. that little piece of legislation that the federal government doesn't have to recognize same-sex marriages... and further... defines marriage between a man and a woman.
In a June 1996 interview in the gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate, Clinton said: " I remain opposed to same-sex marriage. I believe marriage is an institution for the union of a man and a woman. This has been my long-standing position, and it is not being reviewed or reconsidered."
hmmm.... makes you wonder about Hilary...

With respect to Nick's comment: please edify me as I have NO idea whatsoever as to "what's gay about melinda doolittle singing "i'm a woman!" Is she a lesbian? Is it a lesbian "anthem"? I posted the comment as I had no idea.
Also, just because you're gay does not mean you had to be catty and pompous; you simply could have explained it to me. I was quite polite in my posting. Had I wanted to be catty and rude to you in return, I could point out your grammatical error, but have chosen not to.
Thanks :<)

John M,
Some gay men follow the careers of female singers like some straight men follow Pro Football Careers. Many gay men have a background or interest in the performing arts.
It in no way means that ALL gay men must be in love with powerful black divas, as that tends to be a stereotype, but the fact remains many do.
Personally, I tend to care more about what happens on "Battlestar Galactica" than who was wearing what designer on the red carpet but I'm a big old nerd.
I still love me some Melinda though.
Hope that sheds a little light on why many stories on Towleroad are indirectly homosexual. Also, this is Andy's blog, so remember, he can choose whatever he wants.

Mark M:
Thanks for your explanation (and all done without being catty!) Not being one for watching much TV - and one who has never watched American Idol - I could not make the connection.
And, yes, I appreciate that this is someone's blog and they are free to write about what they want. :<)

And John M:
Your comment that you "could" point out the grammatical error is catty in and of itself! As Mark said, this is Andy's blog that discusses things he likes, not simply "gay stuff." Oh, and the smiley faces do not take away that fact....
