Hurricane Dean Cuts Swath Through Caribbean
Hurrican Dean scraped the southern coast of Jamaica overnight before moving into open water and strengthening as it rapidly approached Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Landfall is expected there Monday night.

I know this is terrible, but I kept hoping I'd hear on the news that Hurricane Dean had simply wiped Jamaica off the map.

P.P. not so terrible... I too was disappointed that the wrath of Dean didn't swipe harder on Jamaica... they might view this pass as a sign from above that their righteousness and hate is all hunkydory.

There are Gay and Lesbian Jamaicans, you know, trying to bring about change as best they can in their own country. This would be as if Al Qaeda were wishing for the hurricane if it were to reach the US.
If anything, those people whose rational voices are eclipsed by the fervent religious right in Jamaica (who were trained to be that way by the British) may now have that much more of an opportunity to point of the irrationality of the zealots' arguments.

CIRCUITMOUSE,
Thank you for pointing out that there are GLBT people living on the island of Jamaica. I was under the impression that there was something magical about Jamica that insured that everyone who lived there was perfectly heterosexual. From now on, I will not wish disaster on Jamaica because you've shown me the light. Thank you!
xo,
