Catholic League Launches Boycott of Miller Over Folsom Poster

Catholic League president Bill Donohue has taken his displeasure with Miller Brewing one step further than asking them to remove their logo from this year's Folsom Street Fair "Last Supper" parody poster. He has contacted over 200 religious groups and called for a boycott of the company.
Writes Donohue: "This all started when we learned that Miller was sponsoring an event that featured an obscene ad thrashing the Last Supper. After being pressured, Miller offered a lame statement of regret and said it was pulling its logo from the ad. Not only has it not done so—it is still posted on the website of the street fair—Miller refuses to withdraw its sponsorship. To top it off, when we informed them that some of the money being raised at this festival was being funneled to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, they were unimpressed. Accordingly, Miller leaves us with no options: we are calling on more than 200 Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu organizations to join with us in a nationwide boycott of Miller beer. We feel confident that once our religious allies kick in, and once the public sees the photos of an event Miller is proudly supporting, the Milwaukee brewery will come to its senses and pull its sponsorship altogether. If it doesn’t, the only winners will be Anheuser Busch and Coors."
Donohue is also extremely excited to show off the collection of Folsom Street Fair pictures he has amassed.

Don't these idiots who are condemning this parody, realize that it is based on a PAINTING of the so-called Last Supper? It's not like it's a damn photograph.

Most of the Catholics I know drink box wine.

He's calling on Muslim groups, too, to boycott Miller beer? Idiot...if they are religious Muslim groups, they are already boycotting the beer since they don't drink.

BTW Bill, thanks for the pics on your website-they are HOT. See you there!

Too late; the fuel is already in the fire.
I think the Folsom Street coordinators are nothong but self-serving idiots, the Christians Reich (you remember them, they're the ones already in political office in practically every grass-roots community across the nation) are stirring.
This is going to get REAL ugly and the rest of us, by association of the simple fact we are gay, are going to have to pay the price for the stupidity and short-sightedness in San Francisco.

If the Folsom pictures weren't enough entertainment, there is also an enormous collection of essays on his website vindicating Pious XII for his role in the holocaust. He's got all of his wingnut bases covered.

"we are calling on more than 200 Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu organizations to join with us in a nationwide boycott of Miller beer."
Why the hell would jews, muslims, and buddhists care about this? Is the unifying factor the 'thrashing' of the Last Supper or is it a shared dislike of homosexuals? Funny how an assumed shared anti-gay bias always seems to bring temporary peace between some of the most bitter religious rivals (namely Christians and Muslims). I wonder when the last time Christians boycotted something that offended Muslims... but of course when they're offended, everyone should get involved.
I guess I'll be drinking more Miller than usual now...

Derrick I agree.
Inwardly their upset is probably more over a muscular brother playing their jesus myth.
Anyway; damn the poor, damn the hungrym damn the homeless, damn the children.....lets get upset over a picture and waste money and energy over that instead of actualy helping people in need. (snark)
It is past time to tear down the vatican and toss all those homophobic child molestering parasites out into the streets and pelt them with flaming bags of doo doo.
RAD, they would still want to electro shock and chemicaly cure you wether this pic existed or not. Don't play at being their minstral.

Typical, that this closeted Catholic would hoard and post all these photos of Folsom. What a perv, he's probably masturbating to those pictures as we speak.
Catholics and their latencies make my skin crawl. Fucking come out of the closet and leave the rest of us alone!!

Jimmyboyo, thank you-but my balls have already dropped. I am an ex-catholic, so I have dis-associated myself from them a priest molestation ago. I will agree with you about one thing. The muscular 'bro' has peaked my interest in the Church of good lookin'. BTW-the Catholic Church would have never accepted me anyway-my parents are Jewish.

Andrew and RAD, they don't care if you're abercrombie-wearing fags or leather wearing fags. If people are going to be free to engage in sexual activity that doesn't hurt anyone else and is between consenting adults -- you know the argument used to prove that gay sex is not illegal -- then you can't bad mouth people who are into stuff you aren't.

Mr. Donohue is showing what a mindless mouth piece he is. Most conservative right wing religious people don’t drink alcohol. There are many conservative counties in the South that are dry which means that you can’t buy alcohol in that county. Budweiser is also a big supporter of the Gay community. So his boycott will be useless.
Mr. Donohue will say and do anything to get attention. I don’t think he actually speaks for the Catholic Church so I don’t know why he get’s so much attention.

WHOOHOOO! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be getting my mid-morning gah-gah's from the Catholic League (for Religious and Civil Rights...but not YOURS)'s official website! You know, they didn't even post the obligatory NSFW! Just a "WARNING. EXTREMELY GRAPHIC CONTENT BELOW" title which could mean anything...like a trip through ebaumsworld.com.
What an official douchebag you are, Bill Donohue. To think, I could've gotten fired from my job! Oh, but I own the company. Nevermind.

When did I say I wasn't into that?
I'm just stating the obvious. Maybe I didn't make it very clear. No matter what WE do, whether it be boa wearing, cod-piece licking, partner marrying, senate holding-whenever the uber right gets hold of an 'extreme' story like this, they pull every gay person into it. THEY call it 'abnormal' behavior. I call it-good times had by all. However, it still rains down on the gay population as a whole. Like we are all the same. Better?

Since the Catholic League (whom, btw, really doesn't have near the clout they would like to think, and does not speak for the Catholic Church)has been so kind as to give us the PR contact at Miller. We should encourage her to keep up the good work of supporting fun and diverse events such as Folsom. green.julian@mbco.com

When I managed an upscale Westwood/LA hotel 10 years ago, a distinguished man rented a permanent suite on the penhouse floor. He was the U.S. liaison for the Vatican. Mr. D (a different "D") also entertained young lads (18+) quite extensively.
Posted by: Jack Scribe | Sep 28, 2007 12:37:16 PM
The don't call Donohue "God's Rottweiler' for nothing! For Catholics, though, the issue of the picture is more complicated because under church doctrine, even those depicted are part of the body of Christ, or can assumed to be, unless they've done something unforgivable, such as have an abortion or committed suicide. Mere sex acts, by themselves, are not generally condemned. Catholics are not Protestants, in other words. I don't even thing blasphemy applies because Christ isn't actually being depicted. However, one could hardly expect nuances from a PR hungry crowd like this! Donohue made a name for himself defending the Church during the molestation scandal by essentially blaming the victims--and jews. Much fun, he.

I'm sure Miller is shaking in their (leather) boots. Let's see, who drinks more beer? Leather men, or the Catholic League? Hmmm... tough question. Beer often figures into the leather fiction that I've read, but not so much in the bible. I think Miller knows where their drunk bread is buttered.

I'd say we should all go out and buy cases of Miller to show our support, but, it is Miller after all.

If the Catholic League can ever gets its priorities correct then perhaps they'll put as much time/energy/resources into condeming war/violence,reducing poverty and unconditionally loving their fellow human beings? Until that happens I'll be in San Francisco enjoying the sun, naked folks, mediocre street food, dancing and the other very erotic sights and sounds.
Since there isn't supposed to be an official Halloween celebration in the Castro this year then this Street Fair and it's HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of participants are going to be having fun. Bravo to those who are not afraid of human sexuality in all its many beautiful expressions.

San Francisco is certainly different than anywhere else. This sort of thing won't raise an eyebrow there. They don't consider how it will play in the rest of the country--which is one of the things I love about S.F.
The Catholic League and CWA will make an issue of anything so if it wasn't this it would be something else. They will make money off of it and then it will go away. Miller will probably not suffer greatly though they may reconsider sponsoring events like this (though I suspect gays drink as much or more beer than Catholics). I also think the vast majority of Catholics don't know about or listen to the Catholic League.
The danger is that we go all conservative and try to shut down those factions of the gay community with which we're uncomfortable. There is no point in having freedom of speech if we're afraid to use it.
Posted by: db | Sep 28, 2007 1:18:15 PM
Andrew -
no, it only trickles down in the eyes of people like the catholic league...so who cares? If you aren't secure in the type of person you yourself project, then yes having public pictures of people who are into leather who happen to be gay (there are str8s into it too) will disturb you. It's called being insecure. I bet you hate flaming boys too, cause they make your straight friends think you're a big ole nellie.
Posted by: nycredneck | Sep 28, 2007 1:28:13 PM
I wish someone would publish photos of the Catholics at work, molesting children, torturing the innocent during the inquisition, fleecing old people at bingo, profiting off of volunteer labor to pay for the popes apartments and furs not paying taxes and traveling around the world by private jet to preach hate. Just more Catholic love, it’s all around us.
Posted by: ggreen | Sep 28, 2007 1:43:10 PM
Thanks for having the courage, Rad, to buck the "party line." Those with a pathological need for attention like the Sisters of Perpetual Self-Indulgence, drags generally, and the butch drag queens into leather always feed off the naive living in gay ghettos, even if only in their minds. Such clowns learn very quickly that if they "do good works" most will be distracted from the fact that parading their need to shock only plays into the hands of those who use them as examples to demonize us.
This Halloween I think I'll go as Jeffrey Dahmer chewing on some kid's arm or leg or John Wayne Gacy with a shovel in one hand and teenage boy mannequin in the other. It's free speech, right?

"This is going to get REAL ugly and the rest of us, by association of the simple fact we are gay, are going to have to pay the price for the stupidity and short-sightedness in San Francisco. "
Oh NOES! Bill Donahue and the CWA are gonna tell us we're bad and going to hell! I see pitchforks! Torches! Anita Bryant is about to sing!
Oh, wait, they do that ANYway. Every YEAR. Without FAIL. From what cave on Saturn did you emerge, sunshine? And you do realize that the crowd at FSF is no longer exclusively gay, but plenty of hetero BDSM folks fly their freak flag as well?
Don't you get that even if we were to sit very quietly in a dark basement somewhere with our hands on the table, we would somehow still manage to offend them by our very existence? These two entities are not seeking accommodation with fags, they are seeking our "rehabilitiation" or our invisibility. Queers should be neither seen nor heard.
Moreover, what seems to have completely passed people by is that this is a parody of a long line of parodies of a work of art by Leonardo Da Vinci who, you may recall, liked boys.
I am not about to start seriously considering the opinion of a homophobic anti-semite like Bill D. here. I strongly hope others reach a similar conclusion.

As far as trying to be "respectable" goes: does anyone really believe that these people would be happy if gay men and women were meek and mild and never spoke out of turn. Wakey, wakey, they don't want us to exist at all.
BTW, the photos on the Catholic site are by the same person that did the Last Supper photo.

If you are ashamed of gay men who dress in drag in order to raise money for people with cancer and people with HIV/AIDS, then you are a sad, sad case. As someone who is licensed to practice psychotherapy by the State of California, I recommend about two years of therapy (twice a week) for you to clear up that nasty case of internalized homophobia that you display with your post here in this thread.
Best of luck to you.

"Such clowns learn very quickly that if they 'do good works' most will be distracted from the fact that parading their need to shock only plays into the hands of those who use them as examples to demonize us"
Given that the "good works" that the Sisters do include charities to make life better for people who've fallen through the cracks and that those who are "demonizing us" like Bill Donahue and the CWA try to pass laws to ensure that people will continue to fall into them -- be they gay families, adopted kids, blaming the teens for being molested by priests, or saying that Jews hate Catholics -- I really think you should more carefully consider who you're trashing and why.
I will risk "demonization" by such bigots. It shows I'm doing something right.

The protest by the Catholic League is an outrage. This image, which decayed for several hundred years in a Milan church (restored only recently), is Leonardo's DEPICTION of the last supper - it is not an Christian relic - it's a piece of art from 1498. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of take-off's of this image. Some very profane. This is not an "obscene ad thrashing the Last Supper." It has nothing to do with the actual last supper. The Catholic League does not "own" this picture, but finds an accuse to protest when sexuality is displayed. And this parody is so mild - all they are they thinking is P&R for their organization. Disgusting.
Posted by: dave | Sep 28, 2007 3:01:57 PM
GGREEN's comment was right on. Where are the photos of all the Catholic atrocities? Seriously, someone should make a project of taking some "historical" photos of various moments of the Catholic Church's history and post them on a website. That would be fantastic.
Like I noted somewhere else yesterday, the photos of Folsom that the Catholic League posted seem to be ripped from Folsom's site. I can't imagine that they have permission to reproduce them. Someone should sue the fuckers already.
I can’t wait for Sunday! My very first Folsom as a newbie San Franciscan!
Posted by: AdamN | Sep 28, 2007 3:19:24 PM
Since you're recycling the same inanities that you did in a previous thread, Parker, I'll repeat part of my response to your bullshit about "internalized homophobia." Those equating being gay with S&M etc. are just as wrong and just as stupid as the CWA and their ilk. If one hates gay child molesters does that mean one hates being gay? Does condemning gay serial killer Andrew Cunanan mean you have internalized homophobia? How about all the knocks against gay Republicans? That must mean gay Dems hate themselves for being gay.
Being gay has zip to do with any subcultures among gays, which change over time and concurrently vary from country to country, region to region. It doesn't equate with drag whether that means lace OR leather. Whether those are "right" or "wrong" is irrelevant. It doesn't equate with artistic preferences. You might find a disproportionate number of gay men at a performance of grand opera, but you'll also find some at the Grand Ole Opry. Etc. Etc. It isn't even about specific sex acts because not all gay men are into the same ones. It's solely about sexual and emotional attraction to the same gender and
any licensed psychotherapist so recklessly painting it as more than that to justify his own attractions to kink should go into a different field.
You're being equally dishonest about those "who dress in drag in order to raise money for people with cancer and people with HIV/AIDS." The illogical conclusion of that is that they couldn't raise such money without the drag, when, in fact, the urge for attention via drag as Bob mentioned is what actually drives them.
Gacy, whom he mentioned, was a hero in his neighbor for the block parties he threw dressed as Pogo the Clown. He was such a popular figure in Chicago Democratic politics that he was photographed with then future First Lady Rosalynn Carter wearing a high-level security clearance Secret Service pin. Of course, it later came out that he was simultaneously raping and murdering boys and young men. The official count was 33. The youngest were 14. He joked that the only thing he was guilty of "was "running a cemetery without a license."
OF COURSE one is NOT equating someone obsessed with killing with others obsessed with doing fem or pseudo-butch drag. But it's no less absurd to say that they have no responsibility for putting their egos above others.
As for the shallow excuse, "they'll attack us no matter what we do so why not say 'nothing matters,' 'there are no limits'?," you're going to die someday, too, but why commit suicide now?

Subject: Please Support Miller Brewing Company
Please support FOLSOM STREET FAIR by calling Miller Brewing Company and thanking them for their continued support of the Folsom Street Fair. In addition congratulate them for not caving to right-wing pressure to pull out from presenting sponsorship of our Fair.
We have worked successfully with this company for many years, and they have been very supportive of our community. With so much "negative" attention being paid to the Folsom Street Fair poster, we think it's important for Miller to hear from you!
Please contact Miller spokesman Julian Green at green.julian@mbco.com or call 1-800-MILLER 6 or 414-931-2000 to let them know how much you appreciate standing up for us.
Thanks for your support, and we hope to see you at Magnitude and/or the Folsom Street Fair this weekend!

Such a lame try at a rejoinder, Parker, which only amounts to repeating your ridiculous accusation which was more than adequately discredited. We're genuinely sorry you can't grasp the rather simple difference between disapproving of the behaviors of some other gays and hating being gay itself.
Perhaps like Zeke (?) someone else is simply pretending to be the Peter Parker who usually displays such insight and wisdom.

Ha, Ha....With all the "buzz" that poster has caused, the people in charge of Folsom better enjoy the party Sunday, because it may be their last.
I don't care what consenting adults do behind closed doors, but when you wave things like this in the face of Joe/Jane Public, and then take it one step further by giving them the middle finger, you better be prepared to live with the consequences. Keeping events like this on the "DL" is the only way to keep them going. This is 2007 not 1977. Images like the ones posted on the Catholic League fly around the country and invoke thoughts of twisted crimes, abuse, molestation, etc. No one can honestly say that there isn't something weird about grown men wanting to parade around in public in chainmetal jockstraps, hoods, not to mention the meat hooks and more severe "interests".
Events like Folsom are bad press for the gay community. This isn't like Sydney Mardi Gras or other events that are "all in good fun", and despite whatever empty arguments some people make this event has NOTHING to do with pride, acceptance, building bridges, charity (lol), anything constructive.
Without this poster Folsom would have gone off without a hitch and no one would have batted an eyebrow. If you don't want protests, don't send the protesters an invitation.

"No one can honestly say that there isn't something weird about grown men wanting to parade around in public in chainmetal jockstraps, hoods, etc."
To that I would say that no one can honestly say that there isn't something weird about grown men in the Catholic Church parading around in long robes, hoods and prada shoes or for that matter parading around in military attire murdering people they don't even know in the name of freedom! Don't worry Brad and those others so "concerned" about the future of the Folsom Street Fair-It's only the third largest fair in the largest state in the USA and it's here to stay.
Happy Folsom Weekend to those attending and welcome to San Francisco.

Brad you nitwit. Maybe if it was DC. We are talking SF here. SF which is extremly liberal. The SF people will not even bat an eye at anything there.
Rush Limbaugh called and said you are to meet him in the bathroom stall with larry craig to get your guys' freak on behind closed doors.

SF Shawn...
WOW! Lets get personal!!! Did I say a thing about the weird rituals of catholicism and other religions? I agree, they can be just as bizarre. And who the hell brought the military into this? Last time I heard they weren't allowed in San Francisco (thanks Mrs. Coyote).
Your vicious, spiteful attack reminds me how impossible it is to have a dialogue with people who have no time for other points of view - be they conservative, liberal, Christian, Muslim, etc. Oh wait...I'm sure you're a really open-minded, liberal, gay progressive. My bad.
Lastly, I could give a damn about the future of your event, but I think people who do want it to continue would probably appreciate it if the people in charge didn't have it stopped because they felt like rattling a few cages (no pun intended) just for the hell of it.
As for being the "third largest fair in the largest state in the USA" I assure you that politicians are far more interested in the voting power of Catholics (the largest church in the most populous state in the USA and the country) and "concerned citizens" then they are in a few measely dollars going into the pockets of local SF bars and businesses that cater to "fags".
So suck it Shawn.
Kisses.

Jimmy....
See my reply to Shawn.
As for the Limabugh comment I take serious issue with that. Why is it that ANYONE who doesn't whole-heartidly support a lame poster campaign is branded a fanatical conservative? Maybe its a knee-jerk response?

WTF a lot of hullabaloo over an ad. I love the the Catholic group has called on all the other religious groups to boycott Miller. As some have already pointed out, Muslims don't drink and god fearing Christians don't do that much of it either. Oh and why the heck would the Jewish be offended by the ad? They don't even believe in Jesus as the son of God so I don't think they'd care.
The person who owns the photos should send a cease and desist if s/he hasn't given express permission to the Catholic League to use them... or sue their asses for using them without permission.
I call for a boycott of religion. It's a waste of perfectly good time and has destroyed more lives than it ever saved.

Hey everybody!!! Look over there! Isn't that WENTWORTH MILLER????!!!!

Notice how he chose pictures from the Folsom site that he probably considers the most unflattering. One like this http://www.folsomstreetfair.com/photos/alley-2007/images/07UYA_4499.jpg wouldn't be provocative enough, of course.

i don't get it...
i didn't believe christians would advocate drinking to begin with.
by the way, i highly doubt they copy and pasted those pictures with Fred Alert's permission... isn't that against actual christian doctrine, thou shalt not steal

Today I traded text messages with a buddy who recently served on the board of Folsom Street Fair. He said they are absolutely loving the free publicity that this wingnut at The Catholic League is giving them. And he said Miller is continuing to back Folsom Street Fair.

Miller is now owned by international conglomerate SAB-Miller. In addition to Miller, they have tastier beers like Peroni and Pilsner Urquell.
This whole thing is so blown out of all proportion, it is a laugh riot to me.

The pictures at the catholic sight were hawt! I haven't seen such erotic flailing since "The Passion of the Christ."
Perhaps they could add a few screencaps from that holy epic film to the mix.

Of course Catholics don't like Folsom, it's about sex between two men - not a man and a boy........
