Navy Doctor Accused of Secretly Videotaping Midshipmen Having Sex

Cmdr. Kevin J. Ronan, a Navy physician, is currently on trial "charged with seven counts of conduct unbecoming an officer, three counts of illegal wiretapping and one count of obstruction of justice" related to secret videotaping of U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen at his home. Ronan reportedly served as a host to midshipmen as part of a Naval Academy program. According to NBC4, "Sponsors typically are Annapolis residents who open their homes to midshipmen so they can relax on weekends or school holidays."

MidshipmenNow, gay pornography found on Ronan's computer has been brought in as evidence of motivation:

"Ronan's lawyers had tried to keep the evidence out of his trial, saying prosecutors couldn't prove he was the one who downloaded the material, and that the implication he might be gay would turn the jury against him. 'The effect of this is going to be to suggest, 'This is a bad person, he's got homosexual tendencies, and we certainly don't want him in the Navy,'' William Ferris, Ronan's civilian attorney, said in the Washington Navy Yard courtroom. He noted the uproar over the recent comments of Gen. Peter Pace, the nation's former top uniformed officer, who said he believed homosexual behavior was 'immoral.'...'There is a strong prejudice against homosexuals in the military,' Ferris said."

The judge has allowed the evidence. Ronan could serve more than 10 years in prison if convicted.

  14. This case certainly won't help with DADT. I guess this is news because people think his having gay porn or being gay will make him more likely to be convicted.

    I'd think there would be no need for that kind of pandering innuendo from the prosecution and the video taping evidence would be more than enough.

    The comments hoping for the tapes to be leaked doesn't do much to counter gay stereotypes. Shame on the headline that tries to imply the midshipmen are having sex with one another.

  16. Some things about the military, and by extension, the service academies, are so freakin' weird. "Sponsors typically are Annapolis residents who open their homes to midshipmen so they can relax on weekends or school holidays." WTF? What other undergraduate institution in the country would have such a program? Go hang out for the weekend with a townie or a faculty member with who you'd otherwise have no interaction with? WTF? Are the poor little things fed if they stay on campus for the weekend or do they have to beg St. John's students and tourists for bread? It's strangely Edwardian - and certainly anachronistic.

    Certainly can't. It's a weak form of evidence and the judge who allows it in the courtroom is retarded. But let's say this guy is gay AND innocent, it wouldn't be that much of a shock to me if he was found guilty. Given my perception of the military environment, I can just see a gay man being a perfect candidate for bigots and manipulative closet cases, who will fuck you and turn around and set you up. I wouldn't doubt if some of those guy WERE the one's looking up gay porn.
