Teen Sisters to be Charged in Tire-Slashing Anti-Gay Hate Crime
Two teenage sisters, Melissa Gaboury, 16, and Meghan Gaboury, 18, of St. Albans, Vermont, are scheduled to appear in court today for spray painting a car with anti-gay slurs and slashing its tires. They are to be charged with a hate crime.
The car reportedly belongs to a pair of distant relatives, Robert Driver and Dalton Flint, who are joined in a civil union.
The Burlington Free Press reports: "Police said an investigation led police to interview the Gaboury sisters, who are distantly related to the victims. Interviews with the teenagers revealed that the Gabourys' interactions with Driver and Flint 'have been increasingly volatile.' Also, both sisters made anti-gay comments during their interviews, police said. A subsequent search of a GMC Blazer used by the sisters turned up a knife that matched the puncture marks on the slashed tires, and a can of red spray-paint hidden in a compartment beneath the rear seat."

Okay, wait a minute. If the sisters are distantly related to both victims, then that must mean the victims are related in some way, right? And then these two girls slash their tires. All of which would make for an interesting time at a family reunion.

PP, don't be silly.
The gay couple is CU'd: they're related by (the VT near-equivalent [c'mon, so close -- just go all the way!] of) _marriage_.
Just like you're related to your father's sister's husband -- he's your uncle. Or you're related to your brother's wife - she's your sister-in-law.
Or like I'm related to my husband's sister -- she's my sister-in-law, and her kids are my nephews & nieces. Although since we're in Mass, it's actually marriage.
So only one half of the couple needs have genetic material in common to be related to the idiot teens. Or possibly he's related by marriage some other way instead.
I think the family reunions would be awkward in the first place because of those hoodlums -- er, girls.

Oh, and that's not to say they DON'T share blood ties. But the state police press release doesn't go into details, and related can include by marriage/CU.

And not to beat the dead horse, but the Boston Globe item (wire story, maybe) says the SLB's (Becks07's phrase) are related to one of the guys.

Given that they kept the knife and the spray paint, these two clearly aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

For this we want the perpetrators tar-and-feathered but Californians are about to watch Ahnuld veto the gay marriage bill? I don't know which is more violently offenseive to gay people.
