As GOP Backs Off, Persistence Pays Off for Larry Craig

Disgraced Senator Larry Craig dug in his heels, refused to resign from the U.S. Senate, and his strategy seems to have paid off, at least for the moment.

CraigThe Hill reports that Senate Republican leaders have eased up on the pressure they put on Craig to resign when the scandal broke, and Craig looks likely to maintain control over the earmarks he had attached to appropriations bills:

"Leaders have opted not to use the leverage they could exert on Craig by threatening to strip more than 20 spending projects he has sponsored by himself in various appropriations bills. Craig has used these projects to argue that his continued presence in the Senate is valuable to Idaho constituents."

Craig has, however, been stripped of his position on three committees.

GOP leaders have apparently decided that in terms of Craig, the less attention they can draw to him the better.

GOP will let Craig keep his earmarks [the hill]

  1. The caption beneath that picture should read: "I just sucked off a Republican aid in the bathroom, and now I have a pubic hair stuck in my teeth.

  2. They finally got that this anal wart was not going to go away, and that further attempts to make him would only have him parading his embarrassment to the Fascist Family Values Party again and again. When will he be on the Tyra Banks show?

But, ladies and germs, place your bets. Stress often amplifies the siren song of self-destructive compulsive behaviors. As I wrote recently, late Mississippi Republican Congressman Jon Hinson couldn't tune it out even after being arrested near the Iwo Jima monument and publicly humiliated; even after he was pulled from under the pile of bodies of fellow sex-searchers who died in a fire at a DC porn film and sex hole. It was only a matter of time before he was arrested for going down on a Library of Congress employee in a men's room in the Capitol building itself and his career and marriage destroyed. And it's only a matter of time before Craig gets caught again with his zipper down for the wrong reason.

  3. Congress is incapable of debating and passing legislation or representing the people in any capacity. Why would we think that they could police their members? Craig no doubt has lots of dirt on other fellow Congressional cocksuckers. And of course, they all keep tabs on who is taking money under the table from lobbyists. So its just another game of high stakes blackmail.

  4. Oh Leland I CAN'T WAIT to see Larry on Tyra!
She can next start a Male Edition of "America's Next Top Model" and have Larry as one of the judges.

  5. Larry Craig, America's Next Top Male Model Judge...

"Number 2: You've got a gorgeous ass, a basket to die for, and a pretty little mouth, but your stance is not quite wide enough."

    ROTFLMAO!

Thanks, David, for the Best Laugh of the Day!

  6. Looking more and more like Congress, whether at the state or federal level, is an excuse to get away from the wife and kids and have some M2M fun for half the year. They sure don't seem to accomplish much of anything of value. Thank God for a strong executive office. And I agree, Leland, he shall be caught again in a compromising situation.

  7. And then there's Craig's version of a classic 70s T-shirt:

    "Let go of my ear(marks)!
    I know what I'm doing!"

  8. "GOP leaders have apparently decided that in terms of Craig, the less attention they can draw to him the better."

Which is all the more reason that we need to keep this entire affair in the public eye. People need to be bludgeoned over the head with images of Craig and other GOP hypocrites. They need to be reminded just how hollow the "family values" claims of the conservatives really are.

Craig must not be allowed to slink off and hide under a rock. He must be taken down as an example. His crimes against our community are manifold. We must never forget.

  9. Funny how fast all those politicos turn on each other at the slightest hint of trouble or free will. Picture rabid, wild dogs cornering a bunny with his pants down.

  10. Please don't hate me towleroad but I still believe the Senator and if in the future he is legitimately caught doing something illegal and arrested, I would be calling for his resignation too. I still don't believe a word of the police testimony. I know he plead guilty but at that moment he did not use his best judgment.

  11. Davey - did you listen to the audio recording of Craig's interview with the cop? I am VERY hard pressed to believe cops, since I've been fucked over by lying police in the past. But it seems very clear to me in that tape that Craig is the liar and the cop is simply disgusted with his lies.
