A First Show for Banksy in New York

Banksy_warhol

British street artist/prankster Banksy's first New York show is opening this weekend at the Vanina Holasek Gallery.

Banksy_2Bloomberg reports: "The show will be the first selling exhibition for Banksy in the U.S. since September, 2006, when the Lazarides Gallery, Banksy's London-based primary dealer, held a "three-day vandalized warehouse extravaganza" in Los Angeles, featuring a live "elephant in the room" painted in a red and gold floral wallpaper design. Works on show at Vanina Holasek will include Banksy's 2006 painting 'Jack and Jill,' showing children clad in bullet-proof vests, priced at $300,000, and his 2004 limited-edition screenprint, 'Kate Moss,' parodying Andy Warhol's 'Marilyn,' at $175,000."

  1. I love this guy and think it would be really fun to go check out his work... but as an ignoramus, how do these gallery opening work? Do you just walk in and peruse or is there some sort of VIP RSVP list? I don't want to get my hopes up if there's not much of a chance of actually making it into the room on Sunday.

    Thanks!

  2. Oh, thank Christ! Things down here on banksyroad.com had gotten too quiet! But we are back in the game now, boys...

Can a Mika post be too far behind?

  3. I find this work sophomoric at best. That it commands the prices it does is unjustifiable. Same with Murakami: totally over-hyped Gilded Age flatulence. But it does speak to the Bush era and the times in which we live, to be charitable.

Still, that doesn't make it Goya, not even Hockney.

  4. David - Yep, just walk right in, they are open to all.

  5. Towleroad has continued to post about Banksy, in defiance of an overwhelmingly negative response from readers...

    Pease no more, no more,...

  6. DWH....Your snobbery not with standing......even Banksy tell's people they are idiot's for paying for his work.
And comparing a modern street artist with Goya is asinine. Like comparing Rap to Classical.....they are totally different things aimed at totally different audiences. The lucky one's(apparently your not one of those) are the people who can look at and appreciate art or music from many different sources and enjoy them all for what each brings to the table.

I for one love the hell out of wandering about London and seeing Banksy's works in the oddest and completely unexpected places. It fun to see the look's on people's faces when they encounter his work in their ordinary day, in an ordinary way.
You should be so lucky as to bring that kind of a smile to people with your talents.

And I love the way everyone defends Andy, and go on about it being his blog so he can post what he wants, when he post's on subjects they like, but scream ***no more....no more*** when it's not..... :)

  7. On a lighter note.....
I could go with a complete news blackout on Mika, Andy....lmao

And you haven't given us a Christiano Renaldo fix for awhile...hint, hint. :)

  8. Wow. I can see how this stuff might be interesting to happen upon on the sidewalk as graffiti, but as gallery art it's utterly weak. Ronald McDonald with napalm victim? so completely obvious. brazenness does not make you an artist, and being a celebrity like Pitt-Jolie doesn't make you an arbiter...
