Court Unseals Financial Records of Westboro Baptist Church

In response to the nearly $11 million awarded to the father of a slain U.S. Marine in a case brought against Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church and its heinous practice of picketing soldiers funerals, the U.S. District Court in Baltimore ordered the church's financial records unsealed.

Phelps2The Baltimore Sun reports: "Eight pages of documents submitted in U.S. District Court in Baltimore by the church and three of its members - and made public at The Sun's request - reveal they have a net worth of almost $1 million but do not fully explain how the church is able to fund its picketing near military burials across the country. Church leaders, including its founder, Fred W. Phelps Sr. (pictured), contend the jury did not take into account their net worth when it imposed an award of more than 10 times their financial holdings. But lawyers for the Marine's father countered that church members lied in their financial statements submitted to the court. The church's balance sheets will now take center stage as the judge decides how much, if any, of the award Westboro should pay."

Westboro Baptist claims that the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are God's wrath against a nation that tolerates homosexuality. According to the paper, "Church members filed papers late last week with U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett to have him strike down the $10.9 million award as unconstitutional."

And despite the judgment, the church says it will resume picketing.

  2. I do hope this is a first step toward eliminating the tax-exempt status of this "church" and taxing these motherfuckers.

  3. actually, their net worth as of 10.29.07 is 386,952.00, after expenses have been deducted from all of their assets, which came to 492,936.00.

  5. Note to media: find out who's funding Phelps' church members as they gallivant about the nation picketing churches and funerals.

Where's the money coming from? Who are the haters behind the scenes who don't want to sully their reputations by publicly endorsing these hate-mongers, but who are keeping their "crusade" alive through secret donations?

  6. This Westboro Baptist church say they hates the Gay-Community. But they also hate African-Americans, Canada, Sweden, the Fire Department of NY, victims of 911, other Christian Churches, The Pope, Judaism, America, Our American Troops, and the list goes on and on. Many of the groups they despise are specifically named on their hate propaganda, picket signs, and their many websites. They not only hate, but wish death on all that they abhor.
This sick, so called church spreads its hate through picketing in our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive vulgar language, and flag desecration, attempting to create a confrontation.
This is not about protesting, this is about a life of hate. They are not peaceful. They are not a "church". They go after any thing that can get them in the news. This group will protest anything to get its face on TV or in the news. It is about an old man lost in the darkness of hate, but will put his grandchild in danger to save himself. They protest at the funerals of our troops. Do we have a real need to protest at any funeral? Is that a real Freedom?
The city of Topeka, the state of Kansas and the U.S. at large, its citizens and their Churches, schools and events are all held hostage by this "hate group" - always at the tax payer's expense.

  7. Just another way the christians show their love for people who are not in their same belief system! Phelps is a pig. The protests, the misery he has made these military families endure all because he has an agenda. This is another reason to make sure the people representing you in government are truly on your side and have your best interests at heart. Contact all of them and tell them that you are outraged by Phelps, or by anyone who spews the same hatred towards other human beings.
The way to change is through elected office, like it or not. We should all be out there checking up on our constituents who represent us. I can't stress the importance of voting and getting others to vote.
After all that has happened in the past year the Phelps, the Craigs, etc., it should be the easiest thing in the world to get a more liberal voice speaking for the minorities of this country. Its time to remove church from state. Its time there was true equality for everyone, not just the chosen few.

  8. The phelps are not even close to being Christian. If you think so it's not a wonder you think the vast majority of Christians have a problem with non-Christians. I'm also disgusted you'd smear an entire religious group just to try and get a few votes for you're party.
