News: Barack Obama, iPhone, Vermont, Minke Whale, Charmin

road.jpg Poll shows Barack Obama pulling ahead of Clinton in Iowa: "Most Democratic likely voters in Iowa, 55 percent, say they're more interested in a 'new direction and new ideas' than in strength and experience, compared with 49 percent in July -- a help to Obama, who holds a substantial lead among 'new direction' voters." And Obama struggles with spin...

Please ring your call button to advise the Flight Attendant and your fellow passengers when you deem it ready and responsible for this multi-million dollar aircraft and its passengers to safely leave."

Whaleroad.jpg 18-foot-long Minke whale discovered swimming lost, 1,000 miles up the Amazon river: "Environmentalists are now considering the best way to transport the mammal from the Tapajos River, where it was last seen, back out to the Atlantic Ocean. 'It is in good condition,' veterinarian Milton Marcondes from the Brazilian Humpback Whale Institute told the Associated Press. 'We couldn't do a blood exam, so we don't know how it is doing internally, but we gave it antibiotics as a precaution.' He added that it would be easy for the whale to become ill as a result of the stress of being so far from its natural habitat."

road.jpg South African guesthouse owner turns away gay guests: "We are certainly not gay-friendly, this is a Christian household. We have never had a gay couple staying in the house and we prefer to keep it that way. We hereby cancel this order and exercise our right of admission."

Azisroad.jpg Popstar Azis continues to stir the pot in Bulgaria with racy magazine cover: ""I am ready to do anything for a high rating for my show! As you can see from the pictures, I sold my body, or as we say it, got a tuning." (NSFW)

road.jpg Same-sex marriage supporters get vocal in Vermont: "More than 20 people testified before the Vermont Commission on Family Recognition and Protection at its public hearing at Lyndon State College, and throughout the 90-minute session, only two people stood up to speak against same-sex marriage. This was the second forum held by the 11-member commission and the second time that a strongly supportive audience turned out. Major anti-gay groups in the state are boycotting the hearings. Joseph Gainza of Marshfield floated one theory on why gay marriage has not become a divisive topic during the hearings: Most straight Vermonters, including him, noticed that the sky did not fall down after the Vermont Legislature legalized civil unions for same-sex couples seven years ago. 'The change came and you realized that nothing in your life has changed,' said Gainza. 'The only difference is that your neighbors have some rights they didn't have. And none of your own rights were taken away in the process.'"

  1. Re: gay marriage in VT. I think Mr. Gainza is right. While right-wing individuals and groups (such as they are in generally liberal VT) are calling the commission a liberal-stacked farce, I think the average straight person either doesn't care much about the issue any more or doesn't see why gay people shouldn't have the right to marry, since, as has become clear, Civil Unions haven't affected their "heterosexual" marriages in the least. Some day people will look back and wonder what all the brouhaha was about? The change in attitude from just 7 years ago--when I attended the contentious hearings--is remarkable.

  2. The guesthouse in South Africa is owned by Neville and Marion Botha. Perhaps they are relatives of former South African Prime Minister and Nazi sympathiser P.W. Botha?

  3. Tom Cruise can sit on my dick. He can't act; he just reads lines well and isn't very sympathetic. He also ruined the Mission Impossible series for me. What is it about Scientolgy that makes you a bad actor like John Travolta or Kirstie Alley?

  4. Does Tom Cruise meet with his lawyers on a daily, perhaps hourly, basis? He has serious litigation issues.

  5. Hahaha! I loved that pilot's response to the jerk with the iPhone. People think that since information can be accessed so readily that they instantly know better than the professionals.

  6. @ Woodroad34--Actually Mr. Cruise doesn't even read the lines. IIRC he is severely dislexic and has to have the lines read to him.

  7. oops that should be 'dyslexic' Sorry about that.

  8. RIP Mr. Whipple! I remember when I was a teen and the local supermarket had a "Don't Squeeze The Charmin" display. I went over and started squeezing it and a security guard came out of nowhere and yelled "Hey! Can't you read the sign?!" Scared the living hell outta me!! The shoppers roared!

  9. I thought Cruise claimed Scientology "cured" his dyslexia. Maybe it's just something else that was "cured."

  10. I am so sick of Tom Cruise, I wish he would just go away. What an over rated, over paid jackass. He should take a flying leap through a rolling Xenu.

  11. Tacky! That's all I have to say about Azis. Gay, straight, bi or whatever, the photo seems needlessly sleazy to promote a broadcast TV show.

I love Madonna, the most provocative artist of the late 20th-Century American culture. Her "outrageous" works were about a merger of sex, art, and commercialism that seemed more intelligent than this.

  12. Regarding Mrs Clinton falling behind in
Iowa..... ALL democratic voters need to understand and realize that they need to
vote for a candidate in the primaries that
has the BEST chance of beating a republican
and winning the general election. While she
has her faults like everyone else that's
running, she is the ONLY one of the
democratic candidates that can possibly win
in the general elections. It is useless to
vote for a candidate in the primaries that
will NOT eventually win the general
    elections. That's what republicans want!!
Do NOT give them the opportunity!! Mrs
Clinton is the only one that has the best
opportunity to win the general elections
over that of a republican. REMEMBER
THAT IOWA AND THE REST OF THE STATES!!!!

  14. Are you kidding me? Clinton is one of the few Democrats that I would outright refuse to vote for. Having said that there is only one Republican who can beat a Democrat this year but he likely won't win the nomination.

Also I should add that I outright refuse to vote for Rudy or Romney and I will vote third party if my choices are Clinton vs Rudy cause they both suck equally.

  15. (4) "No person may unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds in terms of subsection (3)." And subsection (3) is all about the catch-all banning of discrimination by the state, including sexual orientation.

So the Bothas are probably acting completely against the SA Constitution. What do we have in the US? Not only not this protection, but we have nutjobs aplenty attempting to enshrine additional discrimination into our constitution, on which, in large part, the SA document was based.

On another note, Gerry, completely wrong. HRC has done absolutely nothing to deserve the votes of most Democrats to this point. She still needs to EARN it. And don't give me that BS about no one else in the field being able to win. At this point, that is far from true, and ALL of the Repiglican candidates are so beneath contempt, don't play your politics on that basis.
